    Oi Bea, tudo bem?
    How do you know when to use Língua or Idioma for language?

    • @PlainPortuguese

      Oi! Tudo bem e você?
      Your question is excellent!
      In many contexts, *língua* e *idioma* are synonymous. *Língua* is, above all, an instrument of communication, and that is its main purpose. *Idioma* is the language of a people, of a nation. *Idioma* is related to the existence of a political state. For example, Portuguese is both a *língua* and *idioma* (the official language of Brazil). Tupi-Guarani, one of the most widespread groups of South American Indian languages, is a *língua,* but not a *idioma.*
