It was a nice town with just about everything you would need at one time. I did appreciate seeing how clean and well-kept it is, considering what they have to work with. They still have pride in their little town.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I noticed how clean it was as well.
We need our towns to be filled with independent businesses once again. So that every town can be self sufficient.👍

Yesterday, I was asking another content creator if they had a playlist for NC only. Today I find this. Glad to have you in my YT algorithm. 💙Hey from Hayesville 💙

This is still a great place for trainspotting. That's the CSX-A line which sees a ton of traffic every day.

I agree. A train went by as soon as I pulled up.

I felt a bit melancholy walking around with you in what's left of this town. Your words expressing things as they were, with kids playing and riding bicycles back in the day was sad to picture. Certainly seen it's better days. I did read in the Rocky Mount Telegram that there is an effort to save the Bank of Whitakers, but I wouldn't hold my breath, although the marble floor is still intact, under several feet of dirt . Also, I wasn't shocked to see the Pittman name on the Whittaker Store, as the Pittman's were well know in the area back in the day.
When I went to Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount to see my folks in Northern VA back in the early-mid 60's, I-95 had not been completed thru this stretch of road, and my feeling is, that the completion of I-95 around these towns is what literally sucked the life out of them.

I think you are right about the interstate. And It would be nice to see the old Bank building saved.
Thanks for all the great info 👍

This is all over the south my brother.Once lively towns that are a decaying, just a apiece of their former granduer. They have become living ghost towns.Thank you for what you are doing in documenting these old towns. Shalom

It's a shame to see an almost abandoned town like that. And it looks like it was once a fairly large sized town. Hopefully it'll get rejuvenated one day. Like someone mentioned in another comment, I-94 probably had a lot to do with it's demise. There's a lot of towns, communities that fall victim to that.
    Enjoyed the video.

Yep. We build an interstate highway, then the same ole chains and franchises setup shop at the intersection. Then people start shopping there exclusively, destroying all the independent stores in town.
We have to spread our money around if we want to save our town centers.
Thanks for watching and posting 👍

There's a local nonprofit that plans to fix up the bank building called Whitakers Revitalize and Preserve (WRAP). I tried directing to their site in a previous comment that must have been auto removed by TH-cam. They have a long way to go but at least they're trying!

That’s great to hear. I hope they can achieve their goal as the bank is the center piece for the town.

Very sad looking town. I drove through here about 10 years ago and looked almost the same as it Does now. Once upon a time town now. Probably doing good 40 years ago.

That town center would make a great set for AMC's Walking Dead tv series. It's so sad to see how abandoned and dismal it has become.

They got some rash true liners in Whitakers right down at Marks Street. We went there with a trail beam at one time and they spent blue tree styles at them with the tree bags. I never found them trawlers at the home boys for the store rags.
