I have a theory that pokemon was the first ever fandom that young children could easily participate in. Before the internet it was the first shared language we had. Sure there were things like star wars, star trek and comic book culture but they were already established and targeted at older people. Pokemon content was just so accessible, I could go to the nearest corner shop and buy pokemon cards or magazines. It's crazy how everyone knew the rumours about mew in the ss anne truck or missingno before we had the Internet
Well we did have the web, heck even had GameFAQs already (that site is almost as old as the web itself). It was more that you likely had to rely on the likes of cafes or the library, and wasn't really big yet and still new. Although, I still don't know how I knew. By now it feels like I always knew somehow. But anyway, it being part of the anime boom certainly helped I think. It was just a perfect storm when you factor in the TCG to all that.
Fellow 90s kid here, it really was a special time. My mom tried to avoid me getting into it, but that was, of course, impossible, seeing as I was in 3rd grade when it hit 😂. She eventually let me start collecting the cards, watching the anime, and buying the toys, but I didn't get a GBC until 5th grade, and then I was able to buy a used copy of Yellow off a friend for cheap. So I missed out on the first couple of years in regards to the video game specifically, but I think that's part of what made it so special: that didn't block my entry. Sure, the games were the best part and I was envious i didn't get to play them for so long, but collecting the cards, having a bunch of toys, and talking about the show were just as much a part of it as the video games were. Then I was able to keep up once gen 2 came out and I got Crystal for my 11th birthday, and that was when my Pokemon journey *truly* started.
The marketing and advertisement was too good during this time. Seeing those commercials for Red & Blue invaded my mind and was all I wanted for my birthday
I wasn't allowed to participate in Pokemon as a kid, but have a peripheral knowledge obtained throughout my youth. My favorite is probably Bulbasaur with Snorlax as a super close second. I wonder what that says about me... 🤔
I started playing Pokémon at age 45 with my daughter at the release of Pokémon go in 2016. I still play now and know many go players that are 50 plus because of the combination of walking and collecting.
I'm 31 years old, haven't played the games in years (stopped after Sun/Moon) and yet not a single day goes by without me thinking about the franchise in some way, looking up news, watching a video, etc. Thanks for making it make more sense for me haha My favorite is Blaziken btw!
I’m in my late 30’s currently, still love pokemon and I even purchased scarlet and violet (I was disappointed with all the issues, but I loved the story.), I love pokemon lore man. I love those messed up pokedex entries. 😂 I always joked that if made a trainer persona, I wouldn’t bother trying to be champion, I’d be a professor studying them. That’s always been my appeal the world building in that inverse. That’s being said I’ve always found beyond weird that Pokemon Conquest is actually set in modern day. 😅 Mimikyu is my favorite!
I'm 32 I've been in the pokémon since I was seven. 25 years. I'm going to be obsessed with pokémon until I'm dead. Pokémon is my favorite thing. It brings me comfort.
Im 32 and started playing Pokémon at 7 years old. I borrowed Red/Blue/Yellow from my cousins but it wasn’t until Crystal came out that I bought a game boy color and Crystal. I was sooo happy. I loved the bookmark promos and other magazine information that existed at the time. I would go to my local library because I didn’t have cable internet at the time and didn’t even own a computer lol. I loooved Pokémon Crystal and still have it. I followed the anime until 15 years old and followed the games until Ultra Sun/ Ultra Moon. I felt the quality took a big hit after that. I guess I’m about 7 years out from my last game play but have recently been investigating old games and rom hacks of old games. I also love Yourubers who analyze Pokémon content from that past.
I started playing Pokémon at 7yrs old as well. Started with Pokémon Red. Had been collecting cards before that. I still follow the anime. I haven't played any of the 3D era mainline games. I do play rom hacks and fan games. Pokémon Showdown for competitive and recently TCG Pocket for cards.
a core memory for me for pokemon.... is bye bye butterfree and my mom playing with me organizing all the pokemon figures i have collected. it gives me tears whenever I remember them
18:47 Right there, there's my favorite. I know its usually looked down upon for your favorite pokemon to be a legendary, but my Jirachi plush, who I named Sachi, was my childhood plushie that I had since I was about 9 or so. She still sits on my desk to this day.
I’m 36 and have been in love with Pokémon since the Pokémon phenomenon started. One of my favorite memories was me starting up Pokemon Blue version and looking at all the different pokemon that would rotate on the game’s title screen to learn about all the different Pokémon. My favorite Pokemon is Arcanine. Although I haven’t been a fan of the most recent entries into the series, I still am and will always be a lifelong fan of Pokémon. On a side note, I was lucky enough to catch a shiny female nidoran in the safari’s zone during my last playthrough of Pokemon Leaf Green version. Catching her in the safari zone makes me feel like that it was meant to be. Thank you for the wonderful video.
I got into pokemon when I was in the third grade. I remember I saw the Pokemon Johto cartoon on Boomerang and was hooked by the magic animal trope and their cute/cool factor. Heartgold was my first game and it locked in on that friendship aspect, which is my favorite thing about the games. I loved walking around with my Ampharos and talking to it at random times to see how it felt. I remember the frustration of getting to Whitney and her kicking my butt too many times. I constantly put the game down and came back a month or two later to try again, determined to make her regret bit. Since Heartgold, I have played every mainline Pokemon game. Personally, Pokemon X and Sword are my favorites for having a decent story but great features to interact and show affection to my pokemon. Each new game that comes out, I always hope we can get our pokemon out of their balls outside of battle and play or pet them in some way because they are like my little babies. My favorite pokemon are Jolteon and Quilava, though Bannette is also very high on the list. I have so much nostalgia for Pokemon and though I've never actually played the card game, I collect the cards for their art. I have about a binder and a half with a few rare cards, including a very old Charizard one that was gifted to me from another person's collection. Even now, it's common for my college friends and I to bring pokemon cards when we meet up, rip them open, and trade them to see what fits each collection. One of us collects rarity, one of us collects favorites, and I collect for art so its a perfect activity. I can't ever imagine a world where I am not still obsessed with this franchise.
My favorite Pokemon is Porygon-Z. It is because I used to dabble in ‘dubious disks,’ at the time when the 4th generation came out and I found the idea of a Pokemon running hacked and janky software to be too relatable. Also the way it moves is both sad and hilarious. It’s cool, cute, funny and sad all at once.
I’m a 22 year old black guy and my favorite Pokémon is dragonair. I think a big part of my obsession with her is I was raised on the gulf by tons of water, a big port, and beaches. I’m also a Pisces and was low-key obsessed with water things growing up. I loved Silvermist from Tinkerbell, the water tribes in ATLA/LOK, and mermaids. I always found dragonair yo be the prettiest Pokémon of all time, and I still do. Sleek, huge, all-terrain (can fly, slither on land, and is aquatic), and much more my style than dragonite. My favorite show song is also the Advanced Battle! We’ll never rest! Advanced battle is the ultimate test!
I’ve been around since the beginning of Pokémon. So it’s hard to truly have the ONE favorite for me. But I will at least list my favorite from each generation at least! Generation 1 (RBY): Primeape Generation 2 (GSC): Granbull Generation 3(RSE): Flygon Generation 4 (DPPL): Porygon-Z Generation 5 (BW/BW2): Gothitelle Generation 6 (XY): Meowstic (F) Generation 7 (SM/USUM): Golisopod Generation 8 (Sw/Sh): Dragapult Generation 8.5 (PLA): Ursaluna Generation 9 (S/V + Teal Mask/Indigo Disk): Palafin, Hydrapple
I definitely feel that I have more than one favorite pokemon. I got into opening cards as well recently cause of the art and thrill of getting something good. Especially Zorua and Shaymin. My favorite part in pokemon ever was the Contest in Pokemon Platinum. Dressing up my pokemon to look cute and watching them dance is nostalgic.
I have so many favourite pokemon truly but i think the one that overshadows all of them is Clodsire. Yes the clod is newer and as a lifelong fan of pokemon you’d expect it to be one of the first 150. Yes i love and adore eevee and vaporeon as much as the next person, but truly theres something about paldean wooper and Clodsire that just clicked for me! I do love the original wooper and quagsire a whole bunch too! Really Clodsire has just had a vice grip on my brain since i saw it. If im having a bad day i will draw one quickly and it never fails to make me smile. Love the clod. Adore the clod. Forfeit all mortal possessions to the. Clod!
Pokemania was crazy. I'm glad I was a part of it. It's probably the reason I'm still so fond of the series (Gen 8 and before, fuck the new games). Literally everyone was into in the late 90s.
My favorite Pokemon is Wigglytuff. I loved my Wigglytuff “Do the Wave” deck back in the day for how powerful it was, Jigglypuff was my character of choice in Smash Bros Melee, and Wigglytuff was the first Pokemon I ever bred and EV trained (because I wanted it to be good enough to fight my friend’s Pokemon). I’ve fallen out of love with Pokemon as the games have just not been my thing since the jump to 3D, but I wouldn’t say I’m too old for the series.
Bulbasaur has always been my favorite. Never played the games much, but his intro ep early in the series made him an instant favorite. I like that he acted as a protector of other Pokémon, while the rejuvenated, and I loved that when Ash tried to fight him, he attacked Ash instead of his Pokémon. He knows what’s up! His spotlight episodes in the Indigo League were all great too.
crobat has always been my all time favourite since i was like 11 and i always use it in a playthrough when i can (i’m so sad it wasn’t in scarlet/violet)
Im 25 when i tell you Pokemon has been with me since i was born im serious, my big brother loved pokemon and i love it dearly till this day from my Pokemon XD Gale of darkness GameCube to the copy of Pokemon Scarlet on my switch ill live pokemon and die with pokemon
Working in the TCG space, nostalgia is 100% the primary driver for a majority of buyers; whether it's collecting all of their favourite Pokemon's cards, the set that they never finished as a kid, or trying to share those memories with their own kids. Especially around the release of the 151 set last year, there was a marked increase in the crowds showing up at card shows, but interest (in the cards at least) seems to be plateauing again. And no I didn't guess your fave, I was wagering on the Shellos-line since you're a gen 4 girlie. Also great job with the captioning, it's a lovely accessibility feature~ Favorite Team of Mons: Crobat (Zubat always got a bad rep), Rowlett, Joltik, Sableye, Spheal, and Bidoof
@IMadeThatJumpCmon I've seen a bit of early gameplay, but haven't played myself. Like most of the ShopSims that have been going around, it's a highly condensed, idealized version of the work. The biggest flaw, and one that would have been very costly to implement, is the lack of dialogue. Now we don't have a brick & mortar shop, operating out of local & state card shows to keep our costs/prices down, but you are yapping with whoever comes up 95% of the time. Whether they only collect 1 mon, are putting together a master set, or just want good art, inevitably they're excited to talk about it. Also I don't know if they've implemented trades and bargaining, but most collectors won't take the price at face value, and either try to negotiate you down or offer some of their cards for trade value.
This was such a fun video from someone who isn't an up to date fan! My favorite pokemon is Dewott at this point, but I still love Sandshrew from when I was younger. I love the first american intro of Pokemon, but honestly... somehow all the early japanese ones I got nostalgia for which also coincidentally included Gold and Silver (Which was "Ok!").
I am 26 years old currently. While I was born too late for early pokémon (that being feb. 1998) my first Pokémon Game was Emerald Version at the age of 13, on a Personal Computer 😂 (don't judge!!)... This franchise has shaped my Inner Fantasy World Drastically! My favorite 'mon to this day is Blaziken because of it. I even have Blaziken in a modified game: Renegade Platinum version, to THIS day 🤩
Whats insane to me is that it still appeals to kids today and the franchise is still going strong. I last played pokemon with ruby and sapphire and never played pokemon again until my daughters got into pokemon go and violet. They got a kick out of it when I told them I would watch the shows and play the games when I was kid too haha.
Always sounded wild that the first ever accessible fandom to children in the United States that gave them a shared sense of unity they could bring to school and connect with other people even before they met them is the first thing teachers snuffed out instead of real issues like bullying
My cousin was one of the early rom/emulator players of Pokemon from what I can remember. He was using emulators back in the late 90's from what I can remember, and it was Pokemon Red/Green. Though he never shared what it was but the sprites and even the general GUI of the game was what burned in my memory. Looking back, it was so crazy how quickly even back then there were roms about it.
I was born in early 97 so I have no recollection of the world before Pokémon, but I do have the benefit of having been here since the beginning of it. I'm pretty sure I first developed consciousness in the theater watching Pokémon 3 lol.
I've been getting super nostalgic towards Pokemon the last few months/year, especially since I've been venturing into athletic competitions, I've been using the series as a mental anchor and reference to help me remember. Special shout out to all the tournament/competition episodes that I've made a list to rewatch. I've been reconnecting with the series in a new light now that I'm much older, but still as competitive as ever. Favorite Pokemon is Scizor. I consider it a perfect representation of the series and it's been a consistent team member during my years playing competitively. It's my most reliable partner. My favorite Opening (English) is OP4 Born to be a Winner. On the JP side it's OP 9 Battle Frontier.
My fifth grade teacher. She was a mean black lady that was shaped like a toad. She took my pokemon red strategy guide. The last day of school I snuck in to the classroom and went into her desk and stole it back
I absolutely adore Bronzong! I continue to collect every card of them that comes out even though I don't play the TCG anymore. Literally just thinking about Bronzong makes me happy. Bronzong seen: BOOM, instant dopamine. Bronzong mentioned: BOOM, instant dopamine. Knowing that Bronzong is a pokemon that exists: BOOM, instant dopamine. I'll sometimes look through my old save files or binders just to feel good and think about all the memories. When I get to my Bronzong pages in my binder I remember the world is in order. Everyone needs a Bronzong in their life. On god. Amen.
I don't have an all time favorite, I always pick depending on what it is. Favorite starter? As fully evolved, definitely infernape. Discovered it in my Pearl playthrough, by sticking with my faith for fire types (shattered only since 7th gen), it just looked so cool to me. The RIGHT fire-fighting type. The fact most tough defensive mons like aggron, metagross, magnezone and steelix were not a problem for this calm-mind/ close combat war machine, with Mach punch (a useful priority move to use in case if danger or speed ties) and a typical good'ol flamethrower to benefit the boost, it MVPd my playthrough, being one of the only 3 fire type species available in 4th gen. The anime was a huge contributor, my mind was blown by the fights ash had with it. It was an explosion of power. But in my childhood, my absolute favorite was Ampharos. At first it was nincada, I don't know why, then I played SoulSilver and I changed my mind. It looked tough, I liked the pearls and the stance. His moveset could've been better but wasn't that bad and the thing I liked the most is I saw it as a revenge from the previous stages which I didn't like. 5th gen came and 12 year old me (I was like 3 years late or so, I don't remember) fell in love with Haxorus. It still sticks with me, it made me like the ace as a melee weapon in videogames, had a cool armor and I even used it as an inspiration to some of my fun writing. Scizor also looked really cool and holds a place in my memories, together with breloom. As for later gens, I just loved morgrem. Not even grimmsnarl, which I still really like Design-wise, the middle evo has this... Attitude that just looks cool. 9th gen, I'm torn between ceruledge and Tinkaton. Two completely different designs, one is edgy and cool, the other one is genius and you made me love a little dwarf girl with a giant hammer. Also, everybody hates spidops, I will defend it with everything I got. A tactical spider that does jutsu stuff with its webs? Sign me in.
3:27 Back when I was a kid, kids in my neighborhood would do the same thing. We were all toddlers yet this innate sense of gathering animals we find just around the neighborhood (back then it was still mostly fields and wooded; now it is within a major city). Bug fighting was the goal, collecting was more of an after thought. The spiders, dragonflies and beetles were caught for just one bout and set free. Those who wanted a rematch would "raise" the insects for a rematch or a unofficial championship after the week's end. It was all spur of the moment
I started playing Pokémon at 7yrs old as well. Started with Pokémon Red. Had been collecting cards and watching the anime before that. I still follow the anime and occasionally buy card packs. I haven't played any of the 3D era mainline games. I do play rom hacks and fan games. Pokémon Showdown for competitive and recently TCG Pocket for cards. As for my favourite Pokémon. The answer has changed many times over the years. Snorlax has always been one of my favourites. Just want to lie down and sleep on one.
I love learning about people's favourite Pokemon because it lets me see that Pokemon in a whole new light. Love your video and my favourites are Butterfree and Flygon!
Charizard, Lucario & Haxorus. I love em' all. But these three are my absolute favorites. Especially, in thier first stages. As far as "Eeveelutions", Jolteon. Jolteon is the one for me in that awesome bunch.
Im a 27 year old that started with Sapphire and played more or less every pokemon game with gaps inbetween, in Ireland everyone had to hide their love for it back then. My favourite Pokemon has to be Zigzagoon and its Evos, followed by SirFetchd
The thing is most games on Nintendos platform have often been scrutinized for being colorful and and being targeted at kids. The thing is by being colorful, by being filled with whismy, their games have stood the test of time, while most of its edgy competitor's are no longer here.
For me, Pokemon was just one of the franchises I grew up with along with VHS Previews, Roller Coaster Tycoon, SImCity/SimTower series, Backyard Sports and Humongous Entertainment, as well as my personal favorites, Recess, The Weekenders (Disney Show not "The Weeknd" as the artist), and eventually, once youtube came around, Dinosaucers, Pole Position, Saturday Supercade, and the Namco Museum/Classic Games From Intellevision shows & Games. And while some Nintendo games I used to love, Pokemon Channel to me felt like that one particular game where it felt good having some sort of company with a pet of your choice, as well as Digimon and other monster franchises in the long run (Which Pokemon reminds me of my dad liking Godzilla and science fiction stuff back in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s), which my older siblings would watch old VHS tapes my dad bought of B-Horror Monster Movies from two - four decades back during a time of drive in movie theaters and cinemas, but no home media. Pokemon to me, nowadays, has been an on and off franchise for many years, but I can't deny it was one of the franchises, along with the Roller Coaster Tycoon series, and including movies from back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, that made me want to adapt some of these video games into movies, nearly two decades before detective Pikachu, super Mario bros. movie and five nights at Freddy's movies came about, and nearly a decade after the horrible 1993 adaptation of the Super Mario Bros. films. P.S. I do think when it comes to Pokemon trading cards, and then someone spending a ton of money to find the one card they really want and the person eventually gets it and is in complete shock, reminds me a lot of how the characters in willy wonka/charlie and the chocolate factory would try to find golden tickets, only for the final person to find it and charlie bucket himself, whom thinks that he'll never find one, just so happens to find it in a nearby candy store with that golden ticket. So suffice to say, getting that sweet pokemon card you've wanted for so long is like rediscovering that one golden ticket you had as a child, lost it or sold it off to someone you don't know, only for it to come back once more and have it be yours for as long as you live. It's probably why, to me that is, both the Wonka series and Pokemon series, despite having different stories and scenarios, the winning part of both of those series is quite common in much of media we consume today. I think for me, in the hopeful near future where it's not dystopian as hell, I would hope, someday, much like how I was as a kid, that these pokemon creatures I have seen in media, would appear in my house, not as partners, not to train them in battle, but rather, as family members, siblings, or really good friends that I can be with 24/7 in my house, and doing the same things humans in real life would do. It's what inspired me in 2011 to make my own monster series based off of Pokemon to Bakugan, based off of theme park attractions instead of animals/monsters/cryptids/objects in real life.
My fave is Emboar. Not only his design is cool, but from all games I played he was definetely the one that carried the hardest my team during the main and post game.
Seeing the thumbnail's text saying "too old for Pokémon?" reminds me of the time when I was just in my teens and was told by my teacher that I was too old for Pokémon. For a little context; I've been a Pokémon fan since I was little and had to share a copy of Pokémon Yellow Version with my older sister (I do not recommend it). Anywho; when I was just in my teens, I had ordered from a Scholastic Catalogue a book that was both a complete Pokédex (for the time) and a guide to the Pokémon Games Diamond and Pearl. I was expecting it to be in one day, but it wasn't on my desk. At first; I thought there was a problem with my order, but then my teacher called me into the other room. There; my teacher held in his hands the very book I was waiting for, but what I couldn't help but noticed was the look of disapproval on my teacher's face. As you probably guessed; what happened next was that I was lectured about how I was "too old for Pokémon". I rolled my eyes as I listened to the utter stupidity flowing out of my teacher's mouth; since this wasn't the first time I had to listen to such nonsense. No; my mother's boyfriend was also on my case, and around the same time, too (as if that wasn't at all suspicious). The first thing I did was point at the ESRB rating displayed on my new book; saying that Pokémon was rated E; and asked the teacher to tell me what this rating said. The teacher; albeit reluctantly; said it was rated E. I then asked what E stood for; and the teacher had to admit that it stood for "Everyone"; but then immediately followed up with saying how that all my peers had already stopped playing Pokémon. At that point; I was fed up with listening. I told the teacher right off; saying that whatever my peers are into is their personal choices. Sure; I would have liked it if there were more Pokémon fans my age, but at the end of the day; everyone gets to choose what they are into, just as I get to choose what I'm into. I then told the teacher to stop telling me to stop playing Pokémon; and furthermore to stop comparing me to my peers. My teacher immediately said defensively that he wasn't comparing me to my peers; to which I was like "Oh, really?!" I then told the teacher off that he just got done saying that because all my peers stopped playing Pokémon; that I should stop playing Pokémon as well. My teacher was immediately humbled; which I followed up on by saying I've heard enough; that what I enjoy is my personal business and that I didn't need him to tell me that I'm "too old for Pokémon"; since I had my mother's stupid boyfriend for that. I then walked out of that room and back to my desk with the book I ordered. Some time later; the teacher apologized for what he said, and explained that my mother's boyfriend had talked him into trying to talk me out of playing Pokémon. I had already figured; to be perfectly honest, but I accepted the apology.
Pokémon Advance Battle theme goes unnecessarily hard. That one is my favourite. Johto League Champions theme and, of course, the original Indigo League theme, are in the rest of my top 3.
My favorite pokemon is Sylveon, because the first pokemon deck I ever got was Sylveon themed! I also love Lucario, Zoroark(both Hisuian and normal), and Lycanrock(all forms).
As someone who has never skipped a generation of mainline Pokemon games… it’s difficult to claim any “overall” favorite for me, because I literally have several hundred by now at least. So instead of just picking based on stats or design or typing, I’d have to go with with the one that is my favorite CHARACTER in the anime, MewTwo. Plus… it looks like a cat and I love cats. 😂
@ Same here! “The circumstances of one’s birth are irrelevant. It is what we do with the gift of life that determines who we are.” is something that I always felt a lot of people could benefit from hearing.
Thisis a really good summary, Pokemon has a lot to like specially for kids and the impact is very long lasting, but i know a lot of adults who got into Pokemon because of go so it's appealing for our inner childs too.
My favourite Pokémon are either fan favourites or very controversial that I’m ashamed to like them because many people call them ugly and “looks like a digimon”
What does looks like digimon even mean considering digimon art style gives them a lot more small details than to pokémon, unless it is some very basic level Digimon, then then there isn't that much of a difference.
Why would be ashamed to like anything? Besides, the most Digimon looking Pokémon is Solgaleo and it looks badass (Also the most Pokémon looking Digimon is Datirimon. Look at Smoliv and back at Datirimon and you've got the idea)
4:20 That makes it even harder to "catch 'em all", as the total number of existing Pokemon increases with every new iteration, and the latest entries don't usually have ALL of the previous Pokemon in it.😅
I really enjoyed this video! I have trouble following videos that are edited to be overly fast, and this video was paced quickly enough to be engaging but not so fast that I couldn't follow. Primarina and Milotic are close contenders for my favorite. I also really like all the Eevees, especially Sylveon. Celebi and Mismagius are two others I really really like. I've recently gained an affinity for Flaafy, too. It's really hard to narrow down just a few favorites!
The Cubone line is my favorite, a poor little sad guy that in oder to survive he wears his parents skull as a helmet and uses one of their other bones as a weapon. Not only is that metal as fuck, but he's an adorable sad guy that just needs a hug. I love him, thats my son.
I tend to prefer Water, Grass and Rock types; chill naturey stuff. That being said Infernape is my favorite. The Son Wukong vibes work with my typical Zen Garden vibes. Torterra is a bestie too, nicknamed Bonsai because I'm boring.
33 years old and STILL love the franchise to this day (except Galar, that was ass). Favorite region or Gen is tied between Hoenn (Gen 3) or Unova (Gen 5). I actually started collecting the cards again either during 2019 or 2020, more so because I missed having them and I just find a lot of the artwork on many of the cards, especially my faborite Pokemon just gorgeous (trading card artwork is highly underrated).
My favorite pokemon. It is flygon, starting from the first time i seen it on pokemon platinum. Was a hard grind to level it up. I got into the dexit movement back in sword and shield when flygon was not part of the game release xD
My #1 Pokémon is and always will be Absol. I remember the day when I first saw it in my first playthrough of Pokémon Ruby back in the 2003. It left a serious impression on me that has lasted to this day. There were other favorites the somewhat became equal it when they popped up. Lucario was one of them and now the same is said for Meowscarada, quite possibly my most favorite starter line with Decidueye & and Infernape right after it. But yeah, it's hard but Absol will still to this day be my top favorite with Meowscarada and Lucario following afterwards. I just wish they could give that Pokémon some love and justice that it's been needing since forever. I personally thought since the Fairy typing debut in X and Y that it'd be the first Dark/Fairy dual type as I felt that fit it perfectly. As well as a bit of some love to it stats by giving it more speed at least. Nothing game breaking you know? I don't know, I just find it screwy that it has 465 and not 500 base stat total.
I have tried to pick one all-time favorite Pokemon and I've come to accept that just isn't possible, because there are Pokemon I love equally but for different reasons. I can, however, narrow down to my top 3, all tied for 1st place: 1) Sprigatito: It's a Grass type, my favorite type. It's a cat, my favorite animal. And whoever is animating it in Horizons has absolutely lived with cats before, because they have it doing so many *specific* cat things that you're just not going to think to include if you are not *very* familiar with the little furballs (like when it just sticks its paws in Liko's face). Out of all the "quadrapedal to bipedal" starters, I am the most ok with this one's evos. They still have a very distinct cat-like feel to them that keeps them from venturing *too* close to looking human. However, the first stage is still my favorite of the line by far. 2) Xernas: A majestic fae deer based on Norse Mythology? Heck freaking yes. Deer are my second-favorite animal after cats, and I am very into Norse Mythology, as I can trace my ancestory there easily on my Dad's side. I love how all three of the legendary trio in X/Y are tied to the Yggdrasil and the creatures on it, but Xerneas has the best design and concept of the three, in my opinion. 3) Typhlosion: While technically Yellow was the first game I owned and played, I had zero clue what I was doing, and since you don't get a choice in your starter, for me, it just doesn't count as my first *true* Pokemon game. No, that honor falls to Crystal, which I got on my 11th birthday. That made Cyndaquil my first starter that I picked out, and I got that Typhlosion all the way up to lv 100. It could solo the E4. That 'mon was my *baby*, and so when the day came, many, many years later, that I plugged the cartridge into my GBA only to find the 'Continue' option gone, I legit cried once it hit me that my beloved partner was gone forever. I eventually got the gen 3 games and got myself a new Cyndaquil. I still have that Typhlosion (along with my entite Platinum team, the game in which Ty spent the most time) on Scarlet (all of them respec'd now too for ideal Stats and Natures, Hyper Trained where needed). So, the tl;dr is: It was my first true partner and will always hold a very special place in my heart.(do NOT come at me about the recent BS with him ahahaha. While I can have a laugh at the ridiculousness of it, I also have zero tolerance for the people who are legit trying to say Typhlosion is problematic now. That is nonsense, honestly).
Of the four categories, I guess I’m an explorer, though I never would have called myself that. 😅 I’m not usually into the socializing, the completionist stuff or the grinding/killing. Although, I DO feel a LOT of excitement if I take down a powerful Pokémon boss. Like five minutes ago, I just took out a 5- star Terra raid Gradevoir on Scarlet and I’d spent so many times losing against it that when I finally won, I about screamed… lol And maybe I’m a BIT of a socializer, but not much. I don’t enjoy battling much. I prefer to trade or now, with the update to Scarlet/Violet, play “Fake Out” or “Hide N Seek”.
5:26 My top 5 is probably: 1. Chansey 2. Jigglypuff 3. Togekiss 4. Snorlax 5. Bellossom (Not necessarily for any personal connection reasons, I just like their designs a lot)🥰
Great video! I guess Pokemon will hold a special place in our hearts no matter how old we get. I like Meganium (really!) and a few other mons. As for favorite theme, I'm not sure, but the one from the original series is really good.
Way back in my grade school days I had pokemon fire red and Emerald. I had an action replay that my grandmother bought me for Christmas that I begged for I used it to catch every pokemon in the pokemon in the pokedex until that point I then traded those pokemon kids at school for 50 cents a piece I made $30 1 of the kids mom was a teacher at the school after he got one pokemon I didn't get to sell pokemon at school anymore
I like making tiny mini paper and dry floral arrangements themed after specific Pokemon (With matching themed tiny mini vases!). I wonder if I could make bank selling them to poke-hoarders...
You can’t resell old games? Do you not know there’s a retro game market? Do you not know that competitive Pokémon is a esport? Pokémon games go for quite a bit. Some game pass Gen 1 have a high demand, assuming the battery still works. People love Pokémon beyond the original 151. The first 151 aren’t even the best with the exception of a few.
Yeah piplup is my fav. He’s so cute, but he’s also sassy. Just like me I like to think :) I like the classic Pokémon theme best. In terms of gamer type, I think I’m an explorer. I like finding hidden items and in minecraft, I often die trying to find the perfect biome and cool items. I definitely fell for the just one more/perfect challenge.
This is a really well-done video!! I was surprised to see that it didn't have hundreds of likes because of how great this topic was presented. I actually wrote about the psychological tactics used by video game developers that hook their audiences for my senior thesis in high school, so it was really cool to see some of the research I did being brought up in your video. I've loved Pokemon ever since I was a kid, and it was really interesting to hear some explanations as to why this love still persists. It was also really great hearing a female TH-camr speak on Pokemon, as all of the videos I've watched have been exclusively posted by men. I'd really love to hear your different psychological takes on other topics and I'm looking forward to checking out your other videos, like the Spongebob and Mii one :)
Hmm maybe that you enjoy naps? 😂 I remember lots of folks thought it was evil for some reason too! thanks for watching!
I started playing Pokémon at age 45 with my daughter at the release of Pokémon go in 2016. I still play now and know many go players that are 50 plus because of the combination of walking and collecting.
That's awesome!
I'm 31 years old, haven't played the games in years (stopped after Sun/Moon) and yet not a single day goes by without me thinking about the franchise in some way, looking up news, watching a video, etc. Thanks for making it make more sense for me haha
My favorite is Blaziken btw!
You need to play Scarlet & Violet. I love the open world feel to it
@rooseveltrobinson2686 I'll give it a shot! It looks really fun, just haven't gotten around to it yet
Same here 😊 my favorite pokemon is Swampert.
Same and I'm only 17 but I start feeling so old when I don't know new pokemon anymore.13 year old me would have been so disappointed 😭😭😭
You can play fan games that supercede newer games
I'm 29. I've been a Pokemon fan for about 20 years now, and I don't think I'm ever going to stop being one! 😎
Mimikyu is my favorite!
Conquest is totally modern day! I concur!
Ultra was terrible but PLA and SV are great, especially if you're looking at story.
I was the first person in my town to evolve a Magikarp in Pokemon Go and it is still among my proudest achievements
That is awesome!
a core memory for me for pokemon.... is bye bye butterfree and my mom playing with me organizing all the pokemon figures i have collected. it gives me tears whenever I remember them
I'm 36. Been playing since RBY, still enjoy it for the depth.
18:47 Right there, there's my favorite. I know its usually looked down upon for your favorite pokemon to be a legendary, but my Jirachi plush, who I named Sachi, was my childhood plushie that I had since I was about 9 or so. She still sits on my desk to this day.
I love that story :)
That is such an incredible achievement! I would have been so excited! Thank you for sharing :)
I also love Porygon-Z!
Porygon-Z fan club!
Oh I thought you said "dubious depths", but that's something completely different.
Generation 1 (RBY): Primeape
Generation 2 (GSC): Granbull
Generation 3(RSE): Flygon
Generation 4 (DPPL): Porygon-Z
Generation 5 (BW/BW2): Gothitelle
Generation 6 (XY): Meowstic (F)
Generation 7 (SM/USUM): Golisopod
Generation 8 (Sw/Sh): Dragapult
Generation 8.5 (PLA): Ursaluna
Generation 9 (S/V + Teal Mask/Indigo Disk): Palafin, Hydrapple
I definitely feel that I have more than one favorite pokemon. I got into opening cards as well recently cause of the art and thrill of getting something good. Especially Zorua and Shaymin. My favorite part in pokemon ever was the Contest in Pokemon Platinum. Dressing up my pokemon to look cute and watching them dance is nostalgic.
I have 3 pokémon species that are my most favourite. So I wonder is it right to say pokémon I like most after these 3 is my second favourite?
The important question is... did you win the battle against your friend?
@@dearestdimple Sometimes! Wigglytuff had a really janky Sunny Day moveset, which helped the rest of my team.
My favorite Pokemon is spheal
Honestly valid, that's a cute beach ball.
Adorable
Bulbasaur has always been my favorite. Never played the games much, but his intro ep early in the series made him an instant favorite.
I like that he acted as a protector of other Pokémon, while the rejuvenated, and I loved that when Ash tried to fight him, he attacked Ash instead of his Pokémon. He knows what’s up!
His spotlight episodes in the Indigo League were all great too.
Bulbasaur is so awesome!
crobat has always been my all time favourite since i was like 11 and i always use it in a playthrough when i can (i’m so sad it wasn’t in scarlet/violet)
Why would they leave Crobat out!?
Also great job with the captioning, it's a lovely accessibility feature~
Favorite Team of Mons: Crobat (Zubat always got a bad rep), Rowlett, Joltik, Sableye, Spheal, and Bidoof
Have you played TCG Shop Simulator, and if so how accurate do you think the game is?
My fav mon is Absol don’t care if it wasn’t a strong competitive Mon but winning with it always brought me joy.
Absolutely is awesome. Gen III has a lot of great mons. Including my personal favorite, Beldum.
Winning is fun!
Emolga and Purugly 🥺 are my precious babies
Emolga is too cute for words
I am 26 years old currently. While I was born too late for early pokémon (that being feb. 1998) my first Pokémon Game was Emerald Version at the age of 13, on a Personal Computer 😂 (don't judge!!)... This franchise has shaped my Inner Fantasy World Drastically! My favorite 'mon to this day is Blaziken because of it. I even have Blaziken in a modified game: Renegade Platinum version, to THIS day 🤩
Snorlax is my favorite
He's so great, he creates so many funny scenarios in the anime. :)
The music aspect is certainly true for me, I still remember all the lyrics to the opening theme songs up until Black/White series to this day lmao
Scizor is so cool in the anime!
My fifth grade teacher. She was a mean black lady that was shaped like a toad. She took my pokemon red strategy guide. The last day of school I snuck in to the classroom and went into her desk and stole it back
My favorite pokemon is Absol. I was so happy during XY because Absol got a mega evolution. But there are no good days anymore, only days.
I always thought he was so cool!
My three favorite pokemon are Eevee,Bulbasaur, and Scorbunny
What a tough piggy! Nice pick :)
My favorite pokemon has to be Squirtle with Kyogre and Tropius as a close 2nd and 3rd place.
MewTwo's speech at the end of the first Pokemon movie is one of my all time favorite quotes.
@
Same here!
Also my favorite Pokemon is tinkaton, but before that it was ninetales but it fell to second best but it has a special place in my heart.
Tinkaton is SUCH a cutie! I always thought ninetails was very mysterious as a kid.
Besides, the most Digimon looking Pokémon is Solgaleo and it looks badass
(Also the most Pokémon looking Digimon is Datirimon. Look at Smoliv and back at Datirimon and you've got the idea)
@@BJGvideos Well, these are some really nice points.
my favorite is decidueye. no cool story about it, he just looks awesome especially in his shiny form.
I respect it!
One of my favorite pokemon is Snubbul. Soley because of having a doll of it being my travel buddy in my passenger seat
I love that grumpy puppy!
4:20 That makes it even harder to "catch 'em all", as the total number of existing Pokemon increases with every new iteration, and the latest entries don't usually have ALL of the previous Pokemon in it.😅
Swampert is my favorite pokemon 😊 i love water types so I'm bias.
I adore mudkip! Good choice :)
:)
The Cubone line is my favorite, a poor little sad guy that in oder to survive he wears his parents skull as a helmet and uses one of their other bones as a weapon. Not only is that metal as fuck, but he's an adorable sad guy that just needs a hug. I love him, thats my son.
9:17 THATS MY BOY
11:46 HES THAT BOY
Probably the most metal Pokemon you're absolutely right. :)
I'm trying to remember what my favorites were before I saw Houndoom and Steelix. Once I saw them I was fully on board.
This was such a good video essay! Thanks for putting all your hard work into it!
I tend to prefer Water, Grass and Rock types; chill naturey stuff. That being said Infernape is my favorite. The Son Wukong vibes work with my typical Zen Garden vibes. Torterra is a bestie too, nicknamed Bonsai because I'm boring.
My favourite pokemon is Jumpeon, the rarest pokemon of all time, in the game PokeMMO
Thank you! Learning lots and lots!
It's a really good essay on the topic. You did a great job.
Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it 😁
I was the 10 year old boy who lived for pokemon
Nonsense, pokemon is for all ages
Zoroark, Charizard and Duskinor are my top favorites :)
My top 3 favs have to be
Kingambit Evo line
Scizor
Gardevoir
Gardevoir
It's a whole new world we live in...
POKEMON JOHTO DOO DOODOO DO DOO DOOOO!
my favorite is the ampharos line 5:44
I can, however, narrow down to my top 3, all tied for 1st place:
1) Sprigatito: It's a Grass type, my favorite type.
Like five minutes ago, I just took out a 5- star Terra raid Gradevoir on Scarlet and I’d spent so many times losing against it that when I finally won, I about screamed… lol
And maybe I’m a BIT of a socializer, but not much. I don’t enjoy battling much. I prefer to trade or now, with the update to Scarlet/Violet, play “Fake Out” or “Hide N Seek”.
Incineroar, Raikou and Ursaluna tied
5:26 My top 5 is probably:
1. Chansey
2. Jigglypuff
3. Togekiss
4. Snorlax
5. Bellossom
(Not necessarily for any personal connection reasons, I just like their designs a lot)🥰
I see we both love the Gen 1 bunnies!!! 🥰🐇🐇
the rare Gliscor guy here
Very rare but he needs fans too!
Great video! I guess Pokemon will hold a special place in our hearts no matter how old we get. I like Meganium (really!) and a few other mons. As for favorite theme, I'm not sure, but the one from the original series is really good.
For some reason Maganium's voice from the anime is seared into my memory banks!!
What a hustle! Hahaha
I'll be honest, I didn't guess it until given the 3rd hint. That IS a very random Pokémon
I like making tiny mini paper and dry floral arrangements themed after specific Pokemon (With matching themed tiny mini vases!). I wonder if I could make bank selling them to poke-hoarders...
It is worth a shot!
You chose a great ending soundtrack 👍🏽 3rd gen has some of the best music
You can’t resell old games? Do you not know there’s a retro game market? Do you not know that competitive Pokémon is a esport? Pokémon games go for quite a bit. Some game pass Gen 1 have a high demand, assuming the battery still works. People love Pokémon beyond the original 151. The first 151 aren’t even the best with the exception of a few.
Yeah piplup is my fav. He’s so cute, but he’s also sassy. Just like me I like to think :)
I like the classic Pokémon theme best. In terms of gamer type, I think I’m an explorer. I like finding hidden items and in minecraft, I often die trying to find the perfect biome and cool items.
I definitely fell for the just one more/perfect challenge.
I love Piplup! They definitely have all of the cute features just like Pikachu!
My favorite pokemon is Lucario
7:17 My favorite Pokémon is MISSINGNO. Water Gun
Thank you so much I am glad you enjoyed it! :)
My favorite Pokémon is Dragonite.
The first shiny i ever got was a shiny Nidorina in heartgold!
LUCKY DUCKY! :)
@@dearestdimple 😊
10:00 intresting how 20 years later Undartale kinda did that with its 'fun' variable
my favorite pokemon are typhlosion, zorua, and sylveon
My friends and I never played the cards lol we only collected em
My favorite Pokemon is Ambipom. A lot of my top 6 are funny enough dawns Pokemon minus pachi and bunnary.
