  • Decided to convert my 2006 Yamaha YZ250 to a 72V Electric Dirt Bike. Since the original 2-Stroke Engine was getting tired and needed a rebuild soon anyway, I pulled it and installed Electro & Co's QS138 EMX V3 Kit along with an Amorge 72V 40AH Lithium Battery. With a 350-Amp ANT BMS and a Votol EM-260 25kW Controller.. this bike should be putting out well over 20kW! This video sums up my 10-Part video "Project YZ-E" build series start to finish. Hope you enjoy it!

    Great video
    Couple of small pointers.
Won’t use simple white foam but use Yoga mat. Much more dense and doesn’t break (squash) down.
Also the controller heat sink really shouldn’t be covered and needs air flow. If you cut the bottom of the air box out. Cover the heat sink with a aluminium plate (use thermal paste between the two) to act as a semi perishable stone guard and let air free flow over it.

Excellent video of this electric conversion! A couple tips: I would have gone with a steel battery tray, or completely weld together the one you built... that's one HEAVY battery.
Also it would be good to isolate the battery from the metal edges, as well as the bottom of the battery. It's not going to happen after just a couple of rides but eventually the vibration will cause the metal to wear through the plastic battery. A steel clamp, instead of that lashing strap, around the battery will eliminate 99% of vibration. I personally experienced the result of using a lashing strap instead of the metal one that disappeared from my quad while riding through the woods. The battery tray was plastic and the vibration still wore a hole through the bottom of my battery after just a few weeks.

I am really thankful to you for bringing me up this interesting kit and inspiring me to build up my dream dirt bike! A couple of thoughts:
    - At these power levels, the controller needs to be all the way in front, for air cooling
    - If the battery is fully charged at 85.3V, this is 4.26V per cell. This is way too much, consider lowering it for battery longevity. The regular maximum is 4.20V
    - I think, you really should consider impact safety for motor and especially battery. Looks like one hit to the side will rip out your battery. BTW does it come in a solid metal case? What did you pay for this 3Wh?
    - weight of the complete kit and the battery would be interesting
    - How does the controller behave? Can you adjust it to a certain fixed power, which it can do down to some low battery percentage? (e.g. 17kW consistently down to 20% charge, instead of 25kW at 100% but continuously decreasing during discharge)

Nice job on a really cool build/vision. I'm not sure how hot that controller gets, but I think I would have hard mounted it in the box without the foam around it all and then put a 6" fan in the front rather than closing off that air box. Sure hope there are more options for conversion kits that fit these types of motors into bikes. There is a huge market for tankless plastics and brackets. I'm really wanting to try to build a 300v / 15Ah setup with water cooling (to use the existing radiators) on my KTM 525EXC that has a motor that is getting long in the tooth...

I know this video is older, but you should get yourself a 6” cutoff saw. They’re like $40 from harbor freight, pretty small, and works great for things like cutting spacers. No grinder and vise required and it makes excellent straight cuts. Just a bit of deburring after and they’re perfect

Nice build! Have you had any issues with controller heat? Manufacturer website says bottom side is heat sink and you covered that side in foam. Perhaps you'll need some airflow / fins there if you want to push the bike hard. Location is still perfect for getting some airflow if you want to cut some vent / fan holes.

Not sure that I agree with the recommendation for no display. Information is alway good. What settings options you have is a function of the controller you use.
On a super simple controller like a votol, there are much fewer options than on a Fardriver, VESC based, or even sabvoton.
QS loves controllers with minimal settings.

    The Husaberg 501 .
If the centrifugal force of your electric motor is placed in the center of mass the gyroscopic forces could me minimized.
If the cells were arranged low and more or less wrapping around the motor , I'm sure it would improve the handling vs a high mounted square battery type cell. Just an idea.
The husaberg remains the best handling big bore due to where the weight and centrifugal forces were placed in the frame.

you need thick rubber sheeting instead of foam for cushioning, the foam will wear through in minutes off-road, don't get the battery wet, don't sell the engine you might need it later,

    Hey! Nice job!
I did not find information how what range did You get from that battery pack with that controller and motor?
My calculations are that it should be about 20 minutes of fun if used on full throttle or about 70 miles cruising on flat road at speed 25-28 mph. But what are real numbers?

    • @PatOutdoors
      @PatOutdoors  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I’ve done about 40 minutes of wide open throttle on dirt trails. I’ve done about 1 hour of 40ish mph street cruising before noticing the power dip a lot

Since I am in process of making my own build from scratch(but 25kmh(16mph) cargo bike for city use) wanted to share some information. I don't know how popular is information about sodium batteries in US. Check out the Northvolt sodium-ion tecnology. Much safier and environment friendlier than lithium.
At this stage I am working with my smartInElectricityAndChemistryStuff girl to get 52v battery with that technology. She claims that theoretically these cells should be safe to charge with 36 amps. That means 20ah battery full in less than 35 min.
Those bateries are bulkier and havier at this point, but they allow deep discharge and are heat and cold resistant, and also don't catch fire if damaged. I consider that at this moment it is suitable for e-bicycles til 48v including, but not for 72v bikes(because of weight and dimensions). I understand that at this moment this tech might not be interesting for You, but keep an eye on that. It may become more efficient in close future.

@@vladislavskokosnikovs8790 well I’m also working on two cargo/long range pedal bikes for my wife and I to ride from VA to DC to MD trail systems. One is a 48V and the other is a 52V, both came stock with 20AH batteries but I’m planning on adding an additional 40AH battery on the cargo rack for both. I’m hoping I can squeeze 100 miles easy cruising range with 30a controllers

Same thing that happens when you run out of gas. There’s a volt meter on the handlebar. Stars at 84 volts fully charged, turn back when it falls below 68 volts so it doesn’t shut off mid ride.

72V x 40AH = 2,880 watts or about 3 kWh battery. The way this bike looks like it will be run, guessing 10miles max per kWh so about 30 mile range. Cool project.
