  • Jason Tatum is in the running for NBA MVP. He is incredibly talented and is becoming one of the top players in the NBA. But it is not his athleticism or flashy play that is getting him there. Tatum’s game revolves are skill and his ability to shoot. In this video we breakdown why Jason Tatum has such a simple but effective game.

this helped me a lot to realize that to make it to the NBA (I am currently in the 8th grade) you don't have to have a 48 inch vertical, or be a wizard with the ball like Kyrie Irving. Learning from this, I know now in my game I don't have to over dribble to get open. Thank you so much for this video, it helped me a lot! Definitely will keep this in mind for my future games.

Glad I could help and that is very true you do not need unbelievable athleticism or traits. Just stick to what works for you and master those aspects of the game

And for me personally i see basketball like boxing. Mayweather said his offense was very simple, stuck the jab and when the opponent got used to that he'd land a power shot to the body because the defender got comfortable expecting a jab. Same with basketball , you sell your offense through what you know the defender to expect from you (especially if you have a strength shooting or driving). Expects a drive, so you initiate a drive to active the defender and pull up for a mid range jumper (simple counter). One on one scoring is all IQ based and about setting traps/counters. Look at the clip at 05:12 of Tatum on KD and how he sold the drive on that hop step into a pull up. Personally wish i understood this when i was younger

last year they lost the finals because he played so soft in the paint. he was too focused on drawing fouls vs going up strong and playing through contact. I'm glad he's taken that out of his game.

Tatum’s game is very fundamental, yet effective. Every move he move he makes has a purpose and has little hesitation. This combined with his supreme confidence to take a shot over any defender makes him a dangerous scorer. He needs little space to get a shot off. However, his game is a little too simple at times. During the regular season it doesn’t matter cause his team is so good that they’ll win most games purely cause of their talent advantage. But in the playoffs against a good defense he gets exposed cause his game is too basic and predictable. It’s either a side step 3 or a straight line drive. Defenders can force him into heavily contested bad shots because they know exactly what he’s going to do. That combined with not being an elite playmaker holds him back even more. For example, Jokic’s game is very simple as well but since he’s such a great playmaker it opens the floor for him to get open shots and see less double teams. Tatum has to either become a more erratic unpredictable scorer, or an elite playmaker in order to get to that next level in his game. Rooting for him, championships are in his near future.

If a good defender is jamming his 3P shots and tiring/stressing him out, his quiver of tricks quickly empties…You just have to block his vision of the ring, not necessarily end up blocking the ball from his jump (which is extremely difficult to do)...
He is not a complete player, but is very eficient.
