The first time I ever got on a bike I clutchless-upshifted from 1st to 2nd, knowing that it was possible. It felt amazing. Surprised myself during the Pre-Learners here in Australia. Now I do it all the time, even on softer acceleration - it's just so smooth.
That is what I do in my semi-truck. It is called floating gears. It is very similar. As long the engine and axle speeds are in sync it will shift.

@@MotoJitsu Semi truck transmissions can be pretty forgiving so it's easy enough to learn on and becomes are pretty necessary skill when driving in the mountains. What you've shown in this video seems surprisingly easy. I figured it'd be a far more coordinated effort.
@@OpeoAslam This is also because the gears are a lot closer together. Hence why it's easier to float an 18 speed than a 10 speed.

I was able to do this on my old stick shift car. Accidentally came across this on my bike(new rider). Had to look it up. Glad motojitsu popped up. It’s a good trick for fun or needful situations.

Back when I was still practicing clutchless upshifts it felt like doing a magic trick, and it's so satisfyingly smooth that I upshift with the clutch only when I'm accelerating with just a tiny bit of throttle. No more little nudges while shifting under hard accelaration. I used to get false neutrals every now and then, but adjusting the position of the shift lever helped, and reversing the shift pattern helped even more (for my CBR 600 it was just a matter of flipping the shift rod linkage around), so if anyone else is having trouble getting this right consistently, I suggest trying one or both of those things.

@@davidacevedo4511 you can do anything with the wrong technique and mess up the bike...I always use the clutch downshifting and upshifting too...unless I feel like speed shifting for fun or at the track.

My 2014 street triple clutch shifts were a little rough feeling, never could get a consistent smooth shift. Clutchless shifts helped a lot. So I got a quick shifter, and man does that simply/ smooth everything out.
That's one way of doing it.

Update: it worked perfectly with everything except going 1 to 2, it would either get stuck in neutral or jerk back and forth pretty rough
Weird...a lot do with timing and what rpm you try it at. Maybe raise the rpm up more before next time.

Can't my bike has shift assist...I don't use the clutch up or down shifting on the BMW at all.

Just tried it on my FZ6R. It works just like you say, but is not smooth (but clunky) than a full clutch shift. Also, works best for moderate acceleration. Requires more concentration and finesse to do it when going fast. It's novel, but at full acceleration, the traditional shift is solid/smoother if you just preload the clutch before shifting. I'll keep practicing at it.

You know, I've "accidently" gone from 4th to 5th gear when I went on the freeway once without using the clutch and I was thinking damn I'm gonna mess up the transmission lol

This is old school and all should practice it. Pure mechanical feel, actually you can sense when you go up with lever when is best time to push up or down. Actually when you cut of trottle you are releaving the gears of tension.
On my 1290 SD R i have quick shifter for up and down and MSR for slip regulation so it is easy and controlable action. You can concentrate on drivin fully. But old school is the shit, you have to know it.

Todays bikes are full of tech and demanding 50% or less skill , no flex in frames,suspension is top,tires and brakes omg . I would love to see few youtubers that are full of shit on ...lets say Yamaha RD 350 from late 80's. That bike could handle todays 600's. If you got skills , you know.
I also like you love to take smaller cc bike just to piss people of . One time guy asked me " man you are flyin on that piece of shit, how do you do that?". ( i was on 95' Aprillia 250 - 2 stroke ). I told him that i have ordered Aprillia anti gravity cilinder under seat so that's why i can do that shit. And Millenial asked me how much that cost!!! Todays kids have their iphones ,wikipedia and other shit....wtf teachers teach them in school? Man .....

I try to do this on my Vulcan 1600 Classic but there's a bigger difference between first and second than there is with the rest of the gears. I find that I get smoother results when I use the clutch between first and second whether I'm upshifting or down shifting. I can down shift without the clutch too as long as I let off of the throttle, pre-load the shifter, and blip the throttle down. I've heard that results also depend on the bike too.
Do as you wish...not necessary at all...just if you want to.
I have a Honda CBR600RR and my experience is similar to yours Bryant.

390 Duke motorcycle. I found about KTM 390 Adventure motorcycle, for the beginner? Looks perfect in size, and this is really new thing you can see with the motorcycle designs. No reflection on some of the electric types.

If your clutch is almost fried and you are in the middle of nowhere, can this technique/another similar improvisation work to limp to the nearest civilization?
Is there any way to safely do this but shifting down? What should I do if my clutch cable snaps at highway speeds, for example?

Well I prefer to shift from 1st to 2nd with the clutch. I've heard some guys say - it would be better - for the learning or doing - at 2nd to 3rd and up to the 6th gear, and the shifting part from 1st to 2nd always with the clutch.
Accidently I've it from 3rd to 4th gear - and then I realized I was shifting without the clutch.
But really nice video.
And guess what - I was training with a fresh new rider. He's got his driver license - well... his rider license - this month - and he is really a beginner. We did some basics. Stop and Go, a lot with the clutch and - really much talking about what could happen, and so on. It was soooo much fun today. And all the other bikers, who was passing by - had sooooo big eyes. Haha. It was a great day. And now he gained so much confidence in his bike and of course a lot self-confidence to ride. :)
If I'm not accelerating fast...I just shift normally. But I do each gear without the clutch if going quick...either way or not at all or all the time...all rider preference. Good job training with new rider!

I have a gsxr 750 2009 and I can quickshift but at lower revs it doesn’t shift as smoothly the bike does a bit of a jerk but when I’m going full throttle it’s smooth not sure if it’s the way I’m shifting or just an older bike
I used to love up-shifting with out the clutch. I did the same light pressure on the shift lever and quick jolt on the throttle. Once i got the hang of it it on the throttle on how much on each gear it become smooth like butter.

Hi Eddie! I know that for downshifting is better to USE the clutch, but my question is if doing the downshifting on my motorcycle without the clutch, could at some point damage my motorcycle? I can ask to my mechanic but I also want your point of view on this. Thank you!

You have so many stop lines over there, it would be weird coming from the UK where we prefer roundabouts. You must feel like you're constantly braking to a stop :-) Stop lines here are only really reserved for blind junctions with poor visibility (anything else is a give way but you can just roll through them without stopping if you can see that you can safely do so)

I can't on my GS, it has shift assist. I don't have to do this on the GS, just any pressure the gear goes into the next without doing anything with the throttle. Any bikes, this works. But you don't have to either...

No need for a video..I don't need to use the clutch up or down shifting. It auto rev matches for me when down shifting and upshifting I don't have to release the throttle.
great vid Eddie, but you can actually do it on our bikes with GSAP. BMW style is preload then push up rest of way with throttle to get the upshift completed. However if we just preload and keep at that position you can clutchless shift as you describe in vid. I've done it and works fine, just tiny tiny throttle off and slips right into gear super smooth.
Many riders will tell you clutchless upshifting will damage the gear box, is that true? Anywhere I can read about it?

"many riders" have no idea what they're talking about. If done correctly, there's nothing wrong with it. Of course if you do it with poor technique with anything you could mess something up.

Duke is a bike that has more smoother feeling than most of the others, when shifting with clutch.

Generally speaking; bigger the bike, stronger earthquake feeling when shifting, especially from neutral to 1. What about uploading a video on a bigger bike which doesn't have quickshifter? Thanks in advance.
Yes, I've been doing this ever since I was taught it in Total Control's Advanced Riding Clinic Level 2...every bike I do this on. The Duke doesn't have a quick shifter.
This is very common, I do something and people automatically ask to do another video of the same thing on a different bike...like getting my knee down. I have videos of me getting my knee down on over 10 different bikes...this is the same technique, bike doesn't matter.

What I was trying to say is, I just wanted to be sure if it is possible to have same smooth shifting on a bigger bike. Because sometimes you can't get that kind of smooth transition between shifts even while using clutch on a bigger bike.
PS: I believe it is very acceptable for people to ask for more videos, which means your technique is highly appreciated. Speaking for myself, getting knee down is pushing limits too much that I am not interested in to be honest.
I hate written communication, I don't feel challenged or upset in anyway. 65% of what we say is non-verbal...so you're missing out on about 90% of what I'm saying through tone, rise and inflection of my voice, facial expressions, etc. Yes, you can do this on any bike with the same result. I did it on the Indian Darkhorse and on the Street Glide and my CBR 1000RR and my Hayabusa.

But yes, this can be done on any bike, and have the same smoothness, once you know how to do it really well...every bike I ride, I do this, no issues.

Once it goes into the next gear. You just repeat the whole process.
Hi Greg, don't know if you still read these comments on a 2-year old video but you are the world-champion in responding to comments so I'll try my luck. I've learned this technique from this video and mastered it. Now I'm also considering getting a Tracer 900 GT (not the 2021) and read mixed reviews on the quick-shifter. So my question to you is: Do you consider the Tracer quick-shifter an upgrade to the speed-shifting technique or does it get in the way? Thanks for everything!

when your flicking your hand to slide into the next gear. is it off abit on the throttle or fully close the throttle the back open again?

I tried this for the first time today. It shifted consistently, but the bike jerked forward moderately each time. I thought I might be rolling back onto the throttle too much when doing that "twitch" movement, but attempts to correct for that didn't work. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?
Your answer is in your comment....you tried this for the first time today...do you expect yourself to be perfectly seamless and smooth the first time you do it? Lol I was taught how to do this in a course 3 years ago and been doing it ever since. You need so much more time to be able to do understand when and how much throttle and how much pressure on the peg, etc.

I always use the clutch downshifting unless the bike has a quickshifter down, which most don't.

If you're accelerating decently, a little pressure over a few seconds is fine. Just don't go resting your foot on the shift lever while cruising 😉
Who's that? I don't care what anyone says about it, I was taught how to do this in Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic Level 2 and been doing it ever since. It's fine for the bike, no issues whatsoever.

Could this possibly damage your transmission?
If it did, would I do it? Or would I make a video on how to do it? No, there's no risk to damage the transmission or any other part of the bike. lol
If done correctly, it won't. I don't exactly agree with Eddie saying that you should apply pressure to the shifter before you shift, I believe that doing that can cause eventual damage (but I'm not entirely certain as I haven't pulled apart an engine that has experienced Eddie's technique and an engine of clutchless shifting without pressure on the shifter). From how I clutchless shift, I'm prepared with my foot underneath the shifter but not adding any pressure. Then when I upshift, I cut throttle and push the shifter up, which is smoother than when I added pressure before. Ultimately, though, cutting the throttle for that small amount of time does the same thing as a clutch does - cuts the power delivery to the output shaft.
That way, you're forcing it vs letting it slide in easily....just a tad bit of pressure if fine.
