I get what you're saying, while a TOP TIER meta deck may cost you more than a mortgage (aka anything using the snake eye engine right now), a tier 2 or 3 meta deck is way more affordable. Last tcg format you were seeing plenty of decks top events within the 100-150$ price range. Yu-Gi-Oh is a game that I have a long history with, and while I do find myself having more complaints with it than I did as a child, I still love it all these years later. Not just because of nostalgia, but because of how varied this game can be. My favorite archetypes vary all over the place in terms of quality. Starry Knight a cute little control deck, and it being bad has not stopped me from playing it. At the same time, Spright was meta on release, and yet I love it just as much. Starry Knight tries to get as much mileage from one monster as possible, while Spright gives you access to an entire Level. These decks are complete opposites, yet they are tied together by how well they portray both sides of the game.

Tear format in master duel is one of the ones where I really committed and paid money to make the deck when it came out, and I did enjoy it for a bit but after maybe a few days felt burnt out and frustrated, and people tell me its because I have to get better to enjoy it, so I kept playing, and after a week I felt so burnt out and just felt terrible about the game that I stopped playing altogether until recently. A basic reason why I much rather enjoy playing niche and maybe even BAD decks instead of Meta Decks is a very very simple reason: We know and remember those decks. If I ever feel the need or want to pick them up, I will have almost no problem atleast finding a good guide etc. about it. I know exactly that those decks will not be forgotten and are, based on their time, the Apex of their respected format. I just like to play with decks that are almost non-existent in such formats. Decks that are basically forgotten or just bad. And yea sure, you could call it a Masochistic feeling but in my opinion it's simply fun. I enjoy it, probably more than if I were to pick up RIGHT NOW Fire King/Wanted or try myself on ShS.

    For example:
●Fur Hire taught me early about Chain-Blocking, and correct sequencing.
●Ogdoadic made me learn that a suprising amount of decks loss to Odgoabyss. Quick effect send monsters not SS from GY is really interesting since most power monsters are immune to targeting and D E S T R U C T I O N.
●R-Ace made me learn when to activate what over the other. And to play more passively.
●Rokket/Borral taught me not to over extend. An easy way for your opponent to win is by looking at your deck, and sseing that you have 10-ish cards left.

I actually tried picking up and learning a recently meta deck in infernobles, but by the time i began to get familiar with the combos of the deck, they banned isolde and made them no longer meta. I still like to play infern without isolde don't get me wrong, it does make the combos easier afterall, but at that point I'd only be playing them as a pet deck, defeating the purpose of getting them for the meta experience. This is part of the reason people like to play rouge or casual, at least they last longer. Imagine if I had spent $1000+ on one of these newer meta decks, only for them to fall off in a matter of weeks. Just isn't practical.

1 point I would like to add to this video is that if you *do* pick up a meta deck make sure to take your time learning your cards and the rules don’t quit just because it’s “too hard” give it some time, it’s how you get good at anything.

  • @vinnae
    @vinnae 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I feel like there's a good level of subjectivity to this topic that you only barely touch upon. How much fun someone can have isn't really down to "play the meta, or go play some other game if your non-meta deck gets stomped because there's hundreds of other games for you to play and enjoy". The reality is that sometimes I have to drop my more meta deck in MD because it is starting to bore me just thinking about queueing up for a game with it, and selecting my pet deck and playing that brings me back to liking it. Even if that pet deck of mine gets destroyed and the only fun matches I have is when I go against someone else with a pet deck, the reality is that most of my really interesting and memorable games have happened for me when doing pet vs. pet and seeing how wildly different games can be, because there's so many pet decks out there. When I am playing meta vs. meta, the amount of variance that can be found between different matches is limited, because the amount of decks that are "meta" is much more limited.
Ultimately, HOW you enjoy a game is entirely down to how you enjoy things in general. I'm not here to claim that people who exclusively play meta are having fun wrong either; if playing the meta every format is what makes them have fun then I'm all for it. For added context: I know many people out there who will play games and will "main" a certain character or class. Which is great. Me? I get bored after a couple of games whenever I am trying to main something and stick to it. I need to change up what I'm playing. I need to try wacky stuff even if it means I don't win as much. That factor is there and is undeniable in terms of my own experiences, and it's somewhat weird when someone comes along and tells you you should be going for the most viable strategy every time, otherwise you aren't truly enjoying the current game.
Finally, I do want to be very clear that I agree there are people who can become militant, and that's the case both for meta militants and casual militants. Don't dismiss what makes other people have fun if it's not your cup of tea.

  • @DarkAuraLord
    @DarkAuraLord 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

This video is extremely disconnected with the reasons people don't engage with meta decks, I feel. The chess analogy is also pretty bad and doesn't work at all, because chess is a fixed game that's inherently devoid of variance (in the sense of the word as it applies to card games) and has a lot less of a focus on individual player expression. There's some exception like the Hikaru example you gave, but let's be real he's doing that to flex, like you said, he's just that good. Chess is antithetical to the way pretty much every TCG is designed, and at the highest level it's often times a game of how good your wrote memorization is, which isn't really true of how yugioh is played at a high level.
There are a myriad of factors that incentivize people to stick with a pet deck or rogue option they really enjoy like the art and lore of the cards, the unique play styles certain decks afford, the price of new meta staples and engines, and the breakneck pace of releases that causes a constant rush to keep up with the metagame - these are factors that chess is completely devoid of.
Yugioh is an awesome game with thousands upon thousands of different cards and options available to people, and players simply don't want to limit themselves to the small pool of overpriced / overpowered cards that fit into the box of the metagame and competitive viability, and that's a good thing, because the game would be a hell of a lot more boring if everyone did.
You say that people should look at formats where people share their ideas of what the game should be, like Edison, or GOAT format, but what you seem to not be grasping is that the rogue / bottom tier deck playerbase is just another example of this. I play my bad rogue decks against OTHER bad rogue decks and have a blast, and if I take that deck into a space where I'll be potentially facing against meta, I understand that I'm at a disadvantage and I don't really mind it, I know what I'm signing up for. Most of us aren't here to bash meta players or hate on people for being competitive, we simply play what we like and don't really care about conforming to meta. I say this as somebody that primarily plays rogue decks and occasionally dabbles with meta decks that actually strike my fancy when the other factors that interest me happen to line up with decks that are meta, such as art style, lore, how interesting the deck is to pilot and make decisions with, and so on.

I honestly think that this video is moreso directed to pet deck players who hate modern Yu-Gi-Oh without having given it a real try - people who fail to understand that playing a 2008 outdated piece of garbage competitively is a bad idea, and then complain that the game went to shit because they refuse to even attempt to comprehend what the game has become.
And what's the best way to get acquainted with the modern game? Playing a deck that's either currently meta, or was meta not so long ago (and wasn't hit so hard to the point of becoming unrecognizable). They don't even need to burn their cash for it either, like everyone and their mother is mentioning on the comments - simulators like EDO and Omega (and DN, I guess) exist, are free and are fully automated, to boot. DB is also an option if they're mainly a paper player, too.
If they are completely able to get a grasp of the current game, while also understanding that playing rogue vs meta is more often than not end with the rogue getting vaporized, then they have no business playing meta if they don't want to. Though it might still prove useful in order to learn what those deck are capable of, assuming they're facing them in a consistent basis.

Playing Tearlaments in this current state of MD has really been eye opening for me. I missed full power tear in MD (which was still nerfed compared to actual full powered tear) but current tear in it's gambling state makes games so incredibly fun since almost every game I have to adjust the lines I follow and how I play against the opponents cards based on what is milled and drawn. It's so fun to actually interact against the opponent multiple times in a turn and have to actually think on each interaction. Having the power to actually play against the meta and not getting killed by 1 or 2 hand traps actually makes the game feel pretty open and engaging.

I don't even differentiate between meta, rogue, t0, tn, t1 and so on. Even people that follow the meta (and have success doing so) acknowledge that the pie chart is outdated the moment it is released or at least after the next tournament. There are multiple factors
    - Handtrap/boardbreaker interactions and similar tech cards that behave like rock-paper-scissors get switched out; drastically changing the rankings of decks due to what you'd need to play then and the synergy of those cards with the in-archetype cards
    - new releases; new cards can just change everything
    - removal of surprise factor (which can cause a chain reaction, see the first "-" point)
I just don't bother. Going from an old* to a new deck that combos even if it isn't considered a combo deck by the community is enough if you don't want to swap decks with the same regularity as the meta changes.

You know, I would've loved to play branded to play with my favorite archetype for the past 10 years, but turns out since I just reinstalled MD for the first time since around its release, the main cards are fucked on the banlist (fusion, opening on 1 and aluber on 2) so I don't even get to play it unless I have to fully commit to it.
I would love to play more Sunavalon/Sunvine but it's... eh.
I kinda enjoyed Drytron and made a weird Nekroz version which worked really well, I liked PePe, but overall it's an engine that works with other things, or it's genuinely just an interesting archetype to play, yes I'll play it. Preferably mixing it with the things I like to play. (Shaddolls for Fusion/Graveyard effects, Nekroz for Ritual-type decks, Astograph for Pendulum decks etc.)
A lot of the decks that are meta, just aren't that interesting/fun, that's it. You could use tealaments, but no matter how strong it is, milling is just not a fun mechanic to me, it's why I didn't play lightsworn with it at the time. Desires? Great card, but no thanks, I'd rather have an upstart than just roll a dice basically.

This is what i would say, if you playing on Master Duel, i would recommend playing at least one meta deck, But then eventually build a deck you really like first or after cause meta is there on master duel for rank and what ever. In IRL though i recommend building your fav deck. Locals aren't as cancer as regionals so you might have more fun playing what you love rather than "meta" and many older decks still do a lot.

I get what you're saying but comparing YGO to Chess is straight up delusional 😂
Do you know why? Because the Chess doesn't have a powercreep problem unlike YGO. The meta in Chess could be found ONLY within the realm of *Shannon's number*
But in YGO, the meta ALWAYS revolves around a new busted archetype support upon release that compliments to their respective decks.
If only YGO was made with equal variance for every decks out there, then we would have a discussion. For example, if Konami made each deck with *ONLY 1* omni-negate monster or an omni-negate S/T then that would be a good thing because each deck had the capacity to oust each other in a duel.
But wait, its just one problem to consider because you have to know that each deck in existence *MUST be always equal in terms of:*
    1. Draw power
    2. Special summon enabler
    3. "x" number of GY effects enabler
    4. "x" number of Banish effects enabler
    5. "x" number of negates
    6. "x" number of Speed Spell 1
    7. "x" number of Speed Spell 2
    8. "x" number of Speed Spell 3
    9. "x" number of Speed Spell 4
    10. "x" number of Ritual, Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, Pend, Link support
    11. "x" number of staples that supports the deck
Then it could be truly called equal, mathematically speaking. The only variance that would happen is your drawing hand because the randomness starts there but if every facet of dueling features was fixed with what I said above, then there's nothing to worry about because its all equal anyways. Its the same in Chess, the only variance that happens within that game is whether you start FIRST or SECOND and thus going back to your argument, which is the OPENING MOVE.

3 seconds in and I already feel insulted.
Nah but for real, I won't ever play meta decks cuz I feel like most meta decks are just the ones that won tournaments. Like, this isn't my deck, this the deck that someone else made, and that same someone won with it. Even if I win with the deck, I didn't really win, the guy who created the deck did, I'm just an extension of him. There's no "me" in this. Of course, learning the deck takes some skill, but with how the meta evolves and the powercreep that comes with it, the skill level needed gets lower. And on top of that, there's no attachement to meta decks. Once the next format arrives, your top tier deck gets kicked out and you gotta chase the new top tier. I'd much rather play the deck I spent time building and win with it. Even more so when winning with what I created feels that good.
At the end of the day, I play Yu-Gi-Oh because I want to have fun my way. I don't want to use someone else's skills, I want to use mine.

My philosophy goes as follows, if you hate a deck, play it.
If you absolutely despise an archetype or group of cards, abuse them, slot them into quite literally anything you can think of, as many pieces as you can.
Why? By playing in official circuits, Konami and Co will see.
The second they see your niche forgotten deck is slotting whatever hyper meta tier whozamawhatzit of the week, they'll think 'oh shit, they weren't meant to play it that way' or 'Melodius Snake-Eyes Turbo???' They'll see how out right nefarious certain problem cards can be.
    Will you win? Probably not.
Will it suck for a while? Certainly.
But you'll send a message, and when they receive it they'll hit card after card until it's a problem no more.
Until about 5 years down the line where the rest of the game's crept up to that level anyway.

The problem with Yugioh is not its competitive aspect. I find it boring, it's a personal opinion. but I see the appeal behind it. The real problem with Yugioh relies in the fact it has no (ZERO) ways to appeal to the casual audience. It's like you wanted to play Mtg Commander format, but all there is are infinite combos and turn 3 wins. In Yugioh, even not considering meta decks, there are so many pushed staples and moder cards for archetypes that every game is just turn 1 set an unbeatable board, set 2 realize your deck cannot win through that if not for the hard drawn pushed board equalizer and the game ends there, with very little skill expression, or ways to have fun interacting with the opponent in a game that sets its basis on this concept.
I just hope, with the release of today's 25th anniversary animation, Konami will start a Duel Terminal lore animation that will attract new and returning casual players, forcing Konami to make a new format based on the principles I mentioned earlier

  • @ForGloriousVictory
    @ForGloriousVictory 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I think for me, its just that Master Duel doesnt have any other readily accessible modes. I would love to have a mode to try to learn and play GOAT format, or Eddison, or anything, but they dont have any of those, and even if they did, they'd either not be permanent, or they wouldnt offer gems.
I personally think the Yu-Gi-Oh/Chess conversation is kind of flawed at its core too, just because yugioh is constantly evolving, and rules are always being changed. E4 has been known for longer than ive been alive, and its not like the rules of chess are constantly being changed to make E4 harder to pull off. There is no eddison format of chess.
I like making weird and wonderful decks that are really in tune with their own appearances and vibes, and sometimes that works wonders, other times it shoots myself in both feet, and then my knees as well.
I have no problem with people playing meta, but i think the core problem is that MD especially isnt locals. Youre not just interacting with someone and both trying to have fun and make friends. Its inherently competitive, and you need to climb ranks to get gems, which youll need even if youre just wanting to make a casual deck for friends.
Im only pretty new to Yu-Gi-Oh, but i just wish the fun and interesting and unique decks could have their own place too, rather than the bottom of the trash bin, ya know?

I understand the arguments here. I know it takes more skill to know when to negate something then it may seem to the naked eye, but hear me out.
I think the chess analogy speaks to why people, my self included do not like decks that are overly played in the Meta. In chess it is understood that everyone has the same pieces, they always start with the same pieces, those pieces can only move identically to each other, the only difference is how each person plays. This is inherently not the case for trading card games, nor should it be in my opinion. It defeats the purpose of such a game when everyone has over 25% of their deck using the exact same staple cards. At that point there is no reason for the game to be a trading card game, at that point just make a table top game where both players have the exact same deck.
Variety is the key to a healthy card game, there should not be a card or archetype that is automatically better then everything else. Yes, while power creep is a thing, and one can not really stop that from happening. No deck should have over a third of all players using it, no single card should have over 80% of all players using it, let alone multiple cards all being ran at three copies. There should be a variety of different archetypes that all have their strengths and weaknesses regardless of what they are playing against. Just like in the chess analogy if there is one move, or in this case one deck that has the highest chance of victory, you either play that deck or you lose and again, that kills the idea of a card game where everyone should have their own unique likes and dislikes.
The fact there are games, no matter what the chances are, where a player can lose before they even get to have a turn is just inherently not good design. With or without the proper hand traps, this makes the game more reliant on luck then skill. Do you have the proper hand traps in your deck? Yes? Well I hope you drew them on your first turn or the chance is you just sit there and do nothing while your opponent plays solitaire for 10minutes and you just lose. Alternatively, you could draw nothing but hand traps, and go first, resulting in your opponent who would have more resources with the draw for going second to exhaust your supply and just win that way. Either way the design boils down to luck being more of a factor to your victory then it really should be.

I will say for me its less about whether its meta or not, moreso if it gets me excited. For newer modern decks its hard to put a finger on it, but two meta decks that does get me excited to play it is Silenforcers/Voiceless Voice and Fire Kings.
The first was due to "Saffira, Queen of Dragons," my favorite pet ritual monster of all time, finally being playable; but after playing with the deck, seeing the new boss monster, interactions the deck have; everything about it really, I genuinely love the deck as a whole and not just, "im playing this cause Saffira".....although I still def use her and she puts in work
Fire Kings on the otherhand; I played them back in 2013/15 and thanks to the deck they were arguably my fav timespan in yu gi oh; so when they got new support I was on the deck day 1; and I love every second playing it. I should note though im not a fan of the snake eyes hybrid, I play them mostly pure (I use the Dialbellestar package) because I love the more flexible midrange playstyle it has whereas snake eyes is combo focused with a higher cieling.
Before all of this I was playing Madolches for 4 years straight and you can imagine how that goes; high highs and low lows; but I still loved the deck and they gave me an amazing time overall so I dont regret it.
