  • We noticed some of our apple trees are ripe and have even begun dropping apples so it was time to start harvesting. Since we had so many we thought we would try making some apple juice with our steam juicer, it is so quick and easy, and afterwards we can use the pulp to make apple sauce and apple butter, bonus right? It's also the perfect time for us to move the girl alpacas in to be bred, so come along and join us for a busy day on the homestead.

    After juicing the apples I then ran the apples through a sauce master and it made thick applesauce. No waste

      I know it makes sense to use it for something, it does make a yummy thick applesauce, we went one step farther and let it condense a little longer and made apple butter, so yummy in applesauce and on toast.

      Lol that is a great idea! We have so many wild apples.....all the same problem, they are just so high but they produce way more than our planted apple trees

      I'm glad you enjoyed it. I used the pulp to make apple butter it was soo good in oats meal with cinnamon. I plan on making more this year and hopefully canning it.

    I love the apple butter, we make it with dates and the left over apples, and it tastes so good in oatmeal.

    I place a chair and a large stainless steel pot in front of the stove to collect the juice- just leave the valve open. It’s safer and I can do other things while it’s processing.

    Should I put the heat on high on the stove? Making juice RIGHT NOW! Thanks for the video! Your place is so beautiful!!

      I'm so sorry I just saw this now. It was a really busy day. Not high, just has to steam, so maybe simmer. But I'm guessing you figured it out by now. Hope it turned out great!

    That is a beautiful color of apple juice! Is that because of the juicing method? We have a juicer at home. Curious what the differences in taste and quality would be between these two methods? Thanks for sharing! We actually have a wild apple tree too! I like this idea!

    • @HiddenBlessingsHomestead
      @HiddenBlessingsHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am pretty sure it is because of the skin color of the apples because we didn't peel them. I am not sure what the taste difference is between the two because this is the only method I have used so far, maybe I will have to try a regular juicer and see. You would have a higher vitamin content in the raw juicer but once you can it it probably ends up the same.

    Did you say that you were going to try to make something with the seeds? If so, what do you use them for?

    • @HiddenBlessingsHomestead
      @HiddenBlessingsHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I don't use the seeds, they contain amygdalin, which releases cyanide into the blood stream, in small amounts (say if you were eating the apple whole), this is probably fine but you wouldn't want to collect the seeds and use them. I do use the pulp to make apple butter, this doesn't include the seeds.

    I think I would cut the apples in half before I fed them to the alpacas

      Yes you are right, although it was funny to watch, we usually even cut their carrots up into bite size pieces, in fact we found shredding their food to be best. Thanks for watching!

    About how many apples did you use to make for big jars

    • @HiddenBlessingsHomestead
      @HiddenBlessingsHomestead  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To be honest it has been a while (3 years) since we shot the video, but I believe it was 4 pots of apples. We also make apple butter with the left over apples that we juiced and it is great! I think this system works really well for making apple butter. We steam, then throw the apples through a Victorio strainer and it makes really thick apple sauce, which we then cook down further into apple butter.

    Does the juice need to be processed? Is it shelf stable for years just allowing the existing heat to seal the lids?

    • @HiddenBlessingsHomestead
      @HiddenBlessingsHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I am using it throughout the year, I will sterilize the jars and just make sure the apple juice is boiling hot going into the jars and let them seal. If you want to guarantee they will be good, go ahead and process them for 10 minutes, and in this case, any thing being processed for at least 10 minutes means you don't have to sterilize the jars before processing, just make sure they are good and clean.

    "wild apples" lol What makes the apple trees "wild"?

    • @HiddenBlessingsHomestead
      @HiddenBlessingsHomestead  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lol, when the "wildlife" plants them instead of us 😉 Also if it takes a tremendous effort to "tame" them, they you know it's a "wild" apple 😆 Thanks for watching 😊

      @@HiddenBlessingsHomestead FYI...there is no such thing as a "wild apple", or peach, pear, plum, etc. lol
