I have been thinking about trying this, but I'm just wondering if you sacrifice any flavor of your sauce by extracting all the juice off first? I did it recently with crab apples. But, since it was the first time i'd ever tried crab apples, I didn't have anything to compare to. I used my crab apple juice to make jelly with, and both the sauce and jelly were delicious!
@@northstarprepsteader Awesome! I will definitely be trying this. I absolutely love my steam juicer. I used it last week to steam a couple of chickens and canned the broth.
I love the way you explain things, and how nicely you made the video, with little bits of music and good pointers too. Thank you so much. Bless you Cathy. :)
Here's a tip I seen on another video. Pour the juice from the first jar back into the steamer. Why? Because the hot juice sterilized the inside of the tube killing any little nasties that may have been hiding in it. I thought that was a great tip!
Jaggery is a sweetener that is made from sugarcane; it is also known as unrefined sugar, which is prepared without the separation of molasses and crystals and is mostly produced in India and Africa. You can get it in any Indian grocery stores

I came across your video when researching steam juicers and your video was the best and most informative! I loved it. Thanks. The apple sauce was a bonus for me so my grandchildren and husband will thank you too 😊
I made grape juice from red grapes for the 1st time ever..im so new to this but I'm a little confused as to should I put the fleshly extracted juice in a Jar and into the boiling water if I'm to consume it the same day? What's the point of this process? Awesome video thank you! I will try this for for some apple sauce yummy
If you plan on drinking it within a few days, just put it in the fridge. If you choose to can it for your shelves/pantry, then you will need to have the juice hot for processing in the water bath canner.
I've never seen a steam juicer, very interesting video Cathy. I'm surprised the juice at the beginning and end don't taste a bit different. I was considering a mill and press for cider making; but maybe I'll need to consider a juicer too!
I love apple juice from a wood mill. There’s nothing like that taste and consistency! But, because that is a huge piece of equipment that I don’t have a place to store for, or the money, I think this juicers can do just fine. I think the juice at the beginning is probably more flavorful, so ideally I should probably throw all the juice into a pot so the flavors can blend if I want something consistent. It is so easy to use.
@@northstarprepsteader Thanks for the reply! my brain said beginning / middle / end might vary a bit.. but if it's only a little, who cares! and like you said, you could mix, if desired. Regardless... I love that machine - a neat method I've never seen!
@@OakKnobFarm Thank you! I saw a friend of mine using one, maybe 15-18 years ago, and I thought it was the coolest thing! It also cuts down on labor ;)
When I was really little we lived outside of Salida and one side of the property was a dedicated apple orchard. When it was time my family would go out and harvest apples from sun up to sun down. The smell of those freshly harvested apples rates as one of my favorite memories. Thank you for sharing this juicing method. I can only imagine how wonderful your kitchen must smell as you juice away! Many blessings. 😊
Hiya Cathy! Thanks for sharing both the steam juicer and steam canner..they are brilliant! I moved back 'home' to the east coast. My big homestead was getting to be way more work for an aging widow than I could enjoy. Now am in zone 7a..starting over. Lol. Found a peck of 3 different 'crisps' apples after moving..and HAD to make apple butter😁. Threw the cores and peels in freezer to make Apple Scrap jelly later. I actually love the pristine look of your juice...thank you sharing the whole process! Take care Cathy💗
Thank you! I totally understand how it can be so much more work than we can handle. I’m probably not too far away from that myself. You should have fun growing in zone 7a! Enjoy your jelly😊
Thank you so much for sharing! I'm so excited to give this a try, but I wanted to find a way to preserve my juice for the winter. This is such a helpful video. Thank you and God bless you too. :)
It is equal to a water bath canner. I love it because it takes far less water and energy to heat all that water. SO easy! I’ve not made jelly from scraps but I have made vinegar. I make very little jelly because I just don’t eat it.
That was all so interesting. I don't think Ive heard of steam canning. I like it. The final product looked so good. I wanted to chug down some apple juice. Honey crisps are my absolute fav apples 🍎. Where do u store the juice and sauce and how long does it last? Where did you purchase your steamer and steam canner? Ty so much for sharing.
You're welcome! I store my jars along with the rest of my home-canned goods and they will last 1-1/2 to 2 years. I got both on Amazon and I've added links to the steamer and juicer in the description area below the video.
Yum I love apples I think a steam juicer would be so much better. I really love this! I will have to look into a steam juicer. I have heard they were better to process that way! I have a Breville juicer I like but this is to neat Cathy! Thank you for sharing. Wendy🐞🐝❤️

Wonderful! Glad I was able to help you.
So glad to learn about the steam canner in addition to the steam juicer. Thank you.

I didn’t really notice much difference. If you do, you can flavor with cinnamon or something.

Haha-that is wonderful, isn’t it?! Thank you 😊
Can you make apple butter with the pulp?
Yes! In fact, I think I did that with one batch.
@@northstarprepsteader thank you!
Isn't flavor for applesauce sacrificed when it's extracted?
Only slightly!

How about healthy Jaggery instead of white sugar?
I’ve not heard of that!
Jaggery is like molasses. It’s sugar without all the chemicals and preservatives

@@barbaracarbone4658 only a few that I will be using soon. Otherwise everything else is stored in my basement on shelves.
Can juices be preserved in the same way as those jars in that steam canner
I believe apple juice and tomato juice are the only ones. Not any citrus juices. Other veggie juices (carrot) need to be pressure canned.

If the apples are small do you need to cut them?
yes, it will help the juice to come out of the apple better, otherwise the skin prevents it.
