  • Late August of 2020, my girlfriend Rebecca and I bring our dog, Trek, along with us for a trip into the Queen Elizabeth Wildlands. We borrow our friends Sportspal canoe and portage it from Head Lake up into Clear Lake, where we meet up with our 2 friends for a couple nights of backcountry camping and fishing. This was Rebecca and Trek's first time portaging through multiple lakes, they loved it and we're ready to get a few more trips under our belts in 2021!
I hope you enjoy and don't forget to subscribe!

I've always wanted to go into RedBoat/Clear Lake, but dread that first uphill portage from Fishhog into redboat, so haven't bothered. And I've wondered if Clear Lake in fact has clear water. It does seem to have better clarity than Fishog

Man I really dig that canoe. Looks good and stable, what kind is it?

Hey, thanks for watching Jake. The canoe is a Sportspal and they are very stable. Not the best for Portage camping though!

Sorry for the late reply Dave, but thanks for checking out the video. I've explored more of the park since this trip, with a proper canoe haha, what a great area, for FREE!
      cheers

Awesome video, we are in Ontario and are starting our Backcountry tripping. Did one trip and fell in love, but our big old aluminum made for hard portaging, so have been considering a brand new pointed 16ft Pal as the cost is doable at this time, and fr what we have been reading are pretty durable we aren't interested in rapids and putting our boat through hell. Thanks so much for posting this video enjoy my friends..cheers

Great video guys. Love those rainy nights around the fire. Some pretty brutal weather on the way out though. I've heard about head lake being really windy and something to look out for. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for watching Adam, appreciate it. As long as you've got no where to be, a rainy day under the tarp can be very relaxing. And ya, those head winds on Head Lake hold up to their reputation haha. I'd say the rocks hiding everywhere could put you in the lake as well. The locals seem to keep an eye on you as you paddle across too.
      Cheers man

Dude, that's a pretty rustic canoe, how was that to paddle? Loved the underwater footage! Thanks for posting.

Hahaha thanks for watching man. The Sportspal is a real treat to paddle, as soon as you stop, so does it. Portaging it is a fun time too, I tossed it over my head with no yoke and carried it up that rock hill solo, thought I was going to pass out.
Thanks again for watching, and will definitely have some more underwater footage in the future.

Hey man, really love your videos. I live in southern Ontario and I’ve been wanting to go camping on crown land for a few years now but haven’t gotten around to it. Your videos have been super inspiring and I want to attempt a trip with my buddies this summer. I was wondering if you could make a video detailing some do’s and don’t’s, maybe a video on what to expect/whats essential to bring. Thanks
Love the vids man, keep it up

Thanks buddy, that's awesome to hear, I appreciate you watching and letting me know! The next time I'm planning a new trip, which is hopefully soon, I will definitely put together a video on my own personal process and the things we like to bring.
Thanks again for following along, I hope you enjoy the videos to come!
      Ryan.

How well did that sports pal work for you! I really in joyed your video, I’m thinking about a sports pal thanks for your input ,

Hey thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed.
The sportspal is a great little boat for fishing smaller lakes and even portaging it into one lake over. If you're wanting to use it for a trip like this, I'd want to add a yoke and have the pointed model. They don't move through the water like an ordinary canoe, you cant really stop paddling or it will stop as well and then the wind will push you in whichever direction.
They are cheap and light, and like I said, if you reconfigure it with a yoke and such, it would make a great boat. Don't let the hate you may read online take you away from them, those people are just a little snobby haha.
      Cheers, Ryan
