I should preface this video by saying that the quality is garbage. Didn't have the new camera and external mic for this footage. But it's part of the season so I had to include it.
This is a real treat! Awesome job, being able to see and here the bountiful Taiga means so much to me!! Love the stills, the quiet tasteful music, the animals, the fishing just a good quality time!
Thank you as always SW! I was still in the steepest part of the learning curve at this time, but I'm glad there's still some value to these old vids :)
I wouldn't worry about quality, (which, quite frankly doesn't seem bad to me. We're always our own toughest critics). It"s the content that counts and yours is great.
Thanks Larry! Glad to hear it's not as bad as I think. I cut out most of the awful audio despite wanting to use some of the footage, so I guess it's okay. But it's much better in summer with the external mic. Glad I made that investment.
Lovely film! That is how you experienced it, that is what we would like to see! The real pain and excitement that makes you want to endure these trips! Love it! Keep it up! Enjoy all of it!
Love it as always. You are too hard on yourself. Hey, know how in a newer video Erin tells you that your old hat was horrible? Yeah, functional would be a way to describe it. But your new Tilly is awesome.
A Canadian backcountry "odyssey" ... Great that you did a summary video. I actually had wanted to ask or recommend, that you fix your playlist, so that the videos play in the correct order, maybe this is better. Yes I rewatched some of your trips, no I'm not a stalker, lol.. I guess for me, the attraction is seeing places I haven't traveled to myself, and then dreaming and planning my own trips. You do a great job with location descriptions, and have a humble and honest portrayal of the experience, through out the highs and lows, that occur on a trip. Take care, Ian
Dang I didn't realize that the videos weren't playing in order. They're set up to do so, so that's odd. But I recently added a pop-up at the end of almost all of them that you can click for the next part, so that should help. I'm with ya---so fun watching new destinations and getting inspired. Thanks for that Ian! Humble is a word I appreciate because taking videos of yourself feels kind of vain...glad it doesn't come off that way. Stay tuned for the next part :) -Jon
'll Been make the perf3vt boots for that weather. Eastern woodsmen have used them for a century. A pair 16 inch LL Bean boots well coated in ribbon will keep your feet dry in 20 inches of water. They fit tightly so if you dump they do not fill with water.
Thanks Paul!! The quality of the footage was pretty low when I started recording in the spring, but glad you still enjoyed it. Gets better as the summer goes on :)
Backcountry Angling Ontario - Smile! I'll watch for the change in quality but, to be honest, I'm watching on my phone and it all looks really great. What were you using? What did you upgrade to?
I was using a point-and-shoot camera (Panasonic Lumix TS4). Records okay HD video but the audio was terrible. Upgraded to a Panasonic Lumix FZ300 with a Rode VideoMicro external mic....which subsequently fell into the lake near the end of the season...and will need to be replaced once I get a job!
Kayak paddle, Kayak paddle, Kayak paddle, Kayak paddle. Did I mention Kayak paddle? Never do a energy wasting J-stroke again. Or wast time and energy switching sides. I paddled for 25 years before trying a kayak paddle. The first solo trip I did. I paddled 2 hrs with the kayak paddle. Then switched to my ultra light carbon fiber bent shaft paddle. Used it for 30 seconds. Then returned it to the bottom of the canoe for the rest of the trip. Except when fishing. I have done 4 solo trips in my 20ft long Winona Minnesota lll. It can handle big water and its fast. Consistent 4.25 mph if I needed to get somewhere. 100lbs of gear.
Hahah I totally agree with you. I finally got a double blade last fall for my last long solo trip of the year and it was an absolute game-changer. Covered 200km and had none of my usual wrist pain. Wow that is a long boat for solo!
Oh man, last year was my record year at 26! Before that I had 3 years with 21 nights in the wild since I started camping about 10 years ago. Well done!
OK thinking about it for a minute - you count days and I count nights. If I counted days last year's record would be 36 not 26. Still nowhere near 95 but does sound better :-)
While solo tripping, have you considered using a kayak paddle? As a canoeist I balked at this idea, right up until I took my young son with me on a day trip and quickly realized how much easier it is with a kayak paddle in a canoe while paddling solo. I still bring a spare paddle, which is a Canadian requirement anyways, for times when I just want to paddle casually.
Definitely considered it but haven't switched because (A) I just love a classic paddle in my hands and (B) a lot of times I need to use the paddle to push out of a mucky portage or shallows, and I just don't think a kayak paddle has the strength. I could just bring one of each since everyone needs a spare, as you noted, but I guess I'm just in love with the classic!
Did you weigh or measure any of those bass? I'm not an avid bass fisherman, I like trout, salmon, and walleye but those look like some seriously chunky fish! Edit: Commented before watching the whole thing, of course. Great video, thanks for sharing your experiences.
Was that a strainer in the top of platypus water filter. I use a filter i picked up somewhere. But its a bit too large. Where did you get yours? Thanks...
dude you should look into tenkara, lighten your load and still catch plenty trout, hit me up if you want to try it, i have 3 waders, 8 tenkara rods, plenty of flies, etc :D i live in etobicoke by the way
They look pretty sweet! But they all seem to be long and fly-oriented. I started strapping the rod(s) inside the canoe recently, so it's a non-issue now :) Nice!! I grew up in the Royal York/Old Mill area.

Don't apologize. It is perfect.
Decided to watch this old gem of a video. Awesome to see your journey since then. Keep it up buddy! You provide such entertainment for many people.

@@LostLakes Yeah but that raw power and fire inside can't be mistaken. It reminds me of me 👍

95 days out!? Wow! I’m going to watch this entire series!
Totally love all your videos, I love watching all the paddling and fishing! Thanks from Michigan
Much appreciated Dan!!

Thanks so much Mark! The good, the bad, and the ugly...all part of it! :)
Love it as always. You are too hard on yourself. Hey, know how in a newer video Erin tells you that your old hat was horrible? Yeah, functional would be a way to describe it. But your new Tilly is awesome.
Hahaha thanks Tom :)

Watched part 1 before i left for work this morning... those bass are lunkers... nice video once again.. nice shots, relaxing to watch...
And now I live where there are no bass lol. Miss those lakes. Thanks Dave!
Epic. You've accomplished what we all dream to do... Congrats and thanks for sharing your adventures!

36 is still great! Hard to manage that when you're working.

Backcountry Angling Ontario all very good points.
Rain sleet or snow BAO always go. Lol. 🎣🎣👍👍
😆😆 Love it!

Hey Tim, I don't think so. Just the regular filtration kit which I think I got from MEC

Are you sure you're from t.o.? You have a northern spirit!!
Hahah oh believe me, I wanted to move long ago. But my 20+ years in Toronto just made me appreciate what I have now even more :)
The world would be a much sadder place without Boursin. Lol
I don't even know if I would bother getting up in the morning 😝
Sometimes portages are a necessary evil.
Hey man, you got an instagram?
