  • For Temur Khutsishvili, the poem The Knight in the Panther´s Skin by Shota Rustaveli is Georgian bible. That is why he learned the whole book by heart. "I can recite the poem even if you wake me up in the middle of the night," states Khutsishvili. The poem comprises 1 662 stanzas.

I have a 1957 Russian printing of The Knight in the Panther's Skin. I purchased it from an Icelandic used bookstore around 1995. I had no idea what it was, just that it had an interesting provenance. I've taken it with me on three international moves without ever knowing what it was. I always thought it was from Persia or the subcontinent. I just ran a picture of the title through the Google image search and discovered it was Georgian. Now that I know what it is, I'll have to buy an English translation so I can read it.
