    NOTES! READ ME! :
First of all thank you for watching, subscribing, sharing and commenting! It's MUCH appreciated!
About the video: I can hear very clear differences between all the amps. However, some people will have a harder time hearing differences between the amps than others. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:
    1. I always recommend listening to these comparisons with proper speakers, monitors or heaphones to hear and appreciate the differences between the amps more clearly. You will NOT hear the differences well on a phone or laptop speaker.
    2. Some of the amps inherently simply sound similar. For example, the 6505 and 6505MH will obviously sound similar but the 5150 III's will also sound similar to those amps. A Dual Rectifier will sound very different to a Marshall Plexi though.
    3. You're hearing the same guitar, pickups, player, IR, signal chain and recording take for each amp. This will also make the amps sound more similar. This will however enable you to truly hear the differences between the amps better.
    4. Not everybody listens in the same way. This is also very normal. If you're listening very closely and you still can't hear the differences, try not to feel bad about it.
    5. Perhaps watch this video: th-cam.com/video/bNhQpw9Jd1I/w-d-xo.html
For the metal segments I used a Maxon OD808 to boost all the amps. For unboosted chunky high-gain tones please check out the 'rock' segments. I've come to realise that a lot of people like to boost their high-gain amps with TS808-style pedals so I wanted to include that this time around.
The last time I did a comparison like this in the form of the '1 riff, 22 amps' video I got some suggestions from you guys and I really wanted to incorporate some of those ideas this time around in order to please as many of you as much as I can. So this time there are clean, crunch, rock and (boosted) metal segments. I know that not everybody likes metal so I hope this will please more people this time around. You guys also requested isolated segments and the same IR's to be used for each tone, so I also did that. The video is quite long because of this but feel free to use the timecodes to skip.
I included the Line 6 Helix for a couple reasons. Firstly because it's my favorite modeling platform but also because 1. Line 6 is awesome and 2. modeling is so good these days that this is a good way to show how far amp modeling has come.
If you'd like me to use real mic'ed cabs instead of IR's with a load box: I'm sorry but that's not going to happen anytime soon for a couple of reasons. 1. I'm not able to do that here in my appartment 2. I think the OwnHammer IR's sound just as good if not superior to a 'real' mic'ed cab. 3. I prefer the workflow. etc. 4. Differences between real mic'ed cabs and IR's are negligible IMHO. This is just how I choose to do these tests and I think it sounds great and to me that is what matters. I have to do these videos in a way that I feel comfortable with since this is my creative outlet.
Thanks again for watching and reading! If you want to support what I do please feel free to share the link to this video.

You did a hell of a job! The differences are there, some are more subtle than others obviously but this really does what its supposed to do. I don't have great headphones but i can hear what i'm looking for. I can't wait until i can get a good pair of headphones and really run this video through and really see what i am looking at!!
This video can also be good for pairing amps as well!!
      LOL

Which load box did you use, and what kind of outputs on the load box were used? I’m assuming that in order to maintain consistency you recorded one track DI for each segment and then reamped them for each amp type. Thanks for posting this beast of a video. It must have been a ton of work to put the whole thing together.

Yes, in the studio, with cabs and mics and the impulse response you can make EVERY amp sound like EVERY, or ANY amp. But I own/have owned six of the amps here and played at least half of these enough to be familiar with them and they sound MUCH differently when playing them and hearing them 'in room.' Great video, dude. But we all know that basically any amp can sound kinda like any amp. This would have been a lot more helpful if it was mic'ed as to what the owner of the amp would hear when playing it themselves. The 'in the room' sound. I factually can tell you, and you know very well too, I am sure, that these amps sound vastly differently when you just plug and play them! In room! Unprocessed! For me, THAT is what I want to hear.
I know that in the studio anyone can get any sound out of anything with enough work. Great video, dude. Insane amount of work and yes, I/we can hear the difference and thanks. But the 'sound of it whilst I am playing it as it is in front of me' is what I wanted to hear. I may be in the minority. But that is what I hoped this was. Thanks though it IS a GREAT vid. Just limited use for me anyway.

    My favorites :
Clean - Marshall Silver Jubilee : most sparkly and dynamic tone. Lovely, full of harmonics
    Crunch - Marshall SC20H : AC/DC as f*ck
    Rock - Laney IRT60H : ballsy
Metal - ENGL Fireball 100 : absolutely destroys the competition
All around - Peavey 6505 : Great dynamic clean, cool crunch, chuggy rock and classic full metal tones.

Its true, you cant be absolutely sure what is the realistic sound of amp by watching videos, but this video is guiding very well into that right direction, to what is your favorite sound ,your most familiar and maybe traditional sound in your head, its all about the purpose for your need, for home practising or gigs…a good point is to watch what the pro players are using on gigs?and how theyre sounding on albums…it will not be a mistake..

Thanks a lot for this video. As expected, with the same cab/IR most amps sound very similar. But there still are some differences. I really liked, that you dialed in each amp individually - who cares how they compare with everything at 12 o'clock?
Overall best sounding to my ears are EVH 5150 III 50W EL34 (as expected) and both Laney IRTs (a surprise).
For Metal Mesa Dual Rectifier is still the benchmark and has this Ouuuumpf in the bass, that fits this gerne so good. Others (Marshall etc.) are to lose in the bass and some are tight but very dry (like PRS MT15), which I do not like eather. The Orange Brent Hinds had a very nice Crunch and I also liked it for Metal - have to check it out myself soon. But the PRS MT15 was very good in Rock.

    Great comparison video.
It seems like all the amps are similar in the gain structure but the frequency is slightly different for each amp. So this is where we all make a choice- the manufacture credibility, the look, the feeling, options like effect loops, power switching, size of the amp etc... The bottom line is that we can dail all amps to sound as we want them to sound. Extreme distortion/ Crunch/Lead/Clean. So it is down to us guitarists what we will play and through this we will be perceived by others as a Rock, Metal or country player...

So much to say and so much appreciation! But most importantly I found what I have been looking for for a while now. Been needing to find a solution to replace the Crunch voicing from the Mark V that I have been missing after going exclusive with my Axe Fx III. Sounds like the 6505 should get me much closer to anything else I have tried so far! It sound identical on the highs, ever so slightly less aggressive on the mids (not enough for me to bitch about, but maybe a whisperd groan), and a somewhat noticeable fuller low end, which will be welcomed most if the time.
I can't tell you how excited I am about this. Never gave much attention to the Peavy amps, am a diehard Mesa guy (Mark IV lead, Mark V Crunch, tremoverb, Roadster), and had been looking at the Friedman options for to try to fill in for my the mid needs. But I think I might an even better solution for me in the 6505, and I am very grateful for this awesome video for helping me to find that!

I listened with a not so expensive headset and I hear the differences pretty well on the Rock settings. Less on the metal one, I guess the OD-808 erases some of the differences.
From my point of view, this highlights the fact that the sound is a chain : changing one part of this chain won't change the sound in a drastic way.

I have the Ironheart 120h and it is just amazing. Had considered the 60, but glad I went with the 120 version. Sooooo, freaking good. And does way more than just metal and rock! Have to search around and find those tones within!

I think it was an amazing feat doing all of this, you are right especially doing rock and metal it is hard to turn up in your house , but to get the best from an amp you have to mic it up...however im sure it will help a lot of people, esp those who would record in the same manner. keep up the good work!

    • @SonicDriveStudio
      @SonicDriveStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@mikemitchell7529 I haven't really compared them in that sense but the 60 obviously has more headroom and slightly more 'oomph' in the lows. That will be more obvious when cranked.

Would've liked to hear the metal demos without a boost, as I always feel like a boost just makes everything sound the same... but the Rock sounds were still pretty heavy, so I mostly used that for comparison. I'm pretty surprised that out of the 5 I liked the most, the one I felt was the best was the Laney IRT60H. That thing sounds great! The Fireball also surprised me, I've always associated it as being a one-trick pony of cleans and brutal metal, but you made it sound great. The Recto is the only amp that I actually liked better boosted, which is understandable as you have a 3 channel and those amps always sound flubby in the low end to me without one. You can get close to the 2-channel sound with a boost on those. I'd say my favorites were:
    1. Laney IRT60H Ironheart
    2. ENGL Fireball 100
    3. 5150 III EL-34
    4. Mesa Dual Recto
    5. PRS MT15
    Honorable mentions:
Orange OR15 - REALLY surprised by this one. I thought these were looser mid to high gain amps made for doom/sludge metal/rock, so I've never really looked at them. It sounds great.
Marshall 2525H - Sounds awesome with a boost.
    Dissapointed list:
Marshall SC20 - It sounds almost the same as the SV20, I was expecting more of a gain difference between the two. They both sound great boosted, though. How loud were the amps recorded?
All of the Orange Terrors - The low end sounds too small for a "high gain" amp, probably because of the small glass
Peavey 6505 - I own the original 5150 and it's been my favorite amp I've ever owned (and I've owned over 50 high end tube amps). I'm surprised I didn't like it more than others on my top 5!
    Awesome video, as always!

All I can say is holy fuckin hell, you are a master Jon! I love my rectifiers, always have and always will, but I love my line 6 helix for ease of use with gigs now, I usually use the archon model with ownhammer IR’s. my next favourite amp is the EVH EL34, my god that had an amazing mix of all amps in one! I’ll have to own one now!

  • @111thetawave

It’s interesting because I’ve had a few of these amps over the years and in person they sound way more different then they do here, tho they can also sound more similar than people expect as beautifully shown here. As someone else said, this really makes me realize just how much the way a particular microphone picks up a particular cab effects the eq curve, possibly more than the amp itself ... makes sense tho, I think we’ve all been in situations where someone is mic’ing our rig and we hear it through the monitors and it’s like, that’s not my sound! Lol

This is insane, thank you so much for taking the time to do this! Crazy good comparison.
Out of these 3 for low volume (apartment) downtuned metal (drop C), which would you go for?
    - PRS 15 MT
    - H&K GM40 Deluxe
    - ENGL Ironball (Special Edition coming soon!)
It's difficult for me to judge the tone vs. (low) volume from any videos.
Keep up the amazing channel! Subscribed for sure.
