I own a first month first year production FJ Cruiser and I use it heavily offroad on high speed desert blasting and hard core rock crawling. 130,000 miles later and until interior has zero squeaks or rattles and the FJ was built cheap as a $30,000 rig in 06. I find it extremely unacceptable for a $70,000 tundra to rattle when new. Even the 2nd gen in both iterations was squeak and rattles free.
My '19 gets 14-16mpg, w/5.7. I was very anxious for the new one, but between the high price and gpm, I can't see trading my reliability for that. I still believe they should have kept the V8 and added a 10 speed trans.
My 22 is solid, first truck I want to keep for a while. Buy the standard I force. No battery and has storage which I use EVERYDAY. The power is there when I need it and then some! very snappy.
Finally a TH-camr that knows what they're talking about. Thank you for taking the time to make your videos I am a proud owner of a 2006 DC Tundra 4x4 have about a quarter million miles on it waiting for it to wear out before I get the new one LOL
Another very informative video David good job. I particularly like your honesty in good and bad things related to the truck. I think I may wait until next year to purchase a tundra. I have also heard of various rear axle issues, leaks and the like which concern me quite a bit. Glad to hear that it looks like that they have solved the wastegate issues. Anyway keep up the detailed and informative videos. Thanks.
Hi! I finally got my 22 Tundra crewmax limited TRD off road a month ago, I am also from Canada so I think I can compare mine to yours. As for the infotainement, the only complain I have is when you want to exit the navigation, the button is at the extreme top right of the screen so it makes it kinda far away. I don't always stop it when I park the truck, sometimes you want to end the navigation before you arrive so having it far away make you leave the eyes off the road. For the audio when plugging another phone, I prefer when it doesn't switch automaticly because when I am with my girlfriend, she charges her phone so I don't want it to switch over her phone. For the A/C, I find it a bit weak and takes time to be real cold. In order to have it work well, you need to put it in "top vents" only. I compared it to my Audi SQ5 and in the Audi, it works really good when the vents are in top and bottoms vents. For the Fuel economy it is surprising that you are not getting good MPG. Mine does 12.2 L/100km combined so that's 19.28MPG combined. On highway it is even better, it is 10.2L/100km so 23 MPG. For the transmission, I also find that when you go at low speed 10-20km/h when you release the gaz pedal, it downshift and when you give it a lil bit of gaz it shifts so it is anoying to feel the truck going back and forth. Thanks for sharing you experience with the TRD Pro, I was thinking to switch over but I think I will miss the space under the rear seats, I do put my straps and other towing/recovery thing, under the rear seats so I don't think I would like having those in the truck bed 24/7. I am thinking of switching to the 4Runner 6th gen when it comes, so I hope that the 4Runner will have a good engine and that can tow a fair amount.
Very informative and fair review. I like many of the things they improved over my 2014 and was actually on a list to buy a TRD Sport. Because of the supply chain issues I am now going to wait and see if they do a better job with the next gen Tacoma, especially with the fuel economy.
@14:45 the guys from TFL and Truck King both got way better fuel efficiency than 11.7. Both of them were in the 22-26 range from what I remember in their TH-cam videos.
Wow, 11.7 MPG? That's what I get towing my 23 foot center console bay boat with my 19 TRD Pro with the 5.7 V8. Not towing anything, and being mindful of my right foot, I average between 17-20 MPG, and that is the truth. I absolutely love the look of your new PRO, especially that you got it in white with red interior, beautiful. I will wait a few years before I get into the new gen, just really enjoy the reliability of the one I'm driving now.
Very good review.. My dealer called and has a 2022 TRD PRO. They got it from the NASCAR race. It's white, black interior. Exactly what I wanted when I tried to order earlier this year but they were out of allocation. They've offer it at MSRP. $69K. Have watched a couple of reviews on it tonight. After watching your review and the other I've decided to pass. They need a tow hook up front. Better power outlet in bed and step into bed area. I hate rattles and when you said yours has rattles that turned me off. Also the MPG was bad. I love the truck but I'm old school and I don't think I'd like that huge screen in the dash. I'm already dealing with too much blue light from phone, tablet, computer, TV. I don't need more screens and would find it annoying glaring all the time. Not much of a fan on sun roofs either. They create heat where I live and glare. The cheap interior finishes are disappointing. So I'm passing. Keeping my Tacoma TRD Sport with 39,000 miles.
With the button on the tail light Toyota demonstrated at a launch event, how with having your hands full you can use your elbow to press the button to open the tail gate. Which is really great. A clever feature.
Great review, David. Very detailed & u really picked out the “dislikes “ to let other potential buyers know. I will not be buying the new Tundra, don’t like the design & flaws you mentioned about it. Besides the new interior gadgets, my ‘16 Limited TRD Off road still looks better & the engine is tried & true & known to go over a million miles….I don’t think a turbo engine will last that long
Very good review and comments. I don't like the big grill, or the RED INTERIOR, I think the screen is too large, I don't need a TV screen in a truck. The gas mileage is what surprised me. That is really bad. I hope it improves for you. Say safe out there.
I would like to hear your input on the current engine recall. I remember how you mentioned that Toyota would insure it is reliable and no need to worry about the first model year and now 98,000 units are being recalled for poor engine assembling. I purchased an 23 tundra and am nervous about the reliability.
Love the video David. I've just put a deposit down for a TRD Pro, and they said I'm looking at a 8-12 month wait :/ I'm fascinated with the accessories that you recommend. Is there any chance you can either do a video for the TRD Pro itemizing the accessories you have, or recommend? Much like the one you did before you got the truck. Your videos are always super helpful and informative. Well done!
Thank you! Some of my previous video talk about the accessories I bought (only the TRD running board and tonneau cover actually). But let me see if I can talk about other accessories once suppliers come up with more options.
I have the same powertrain kick issue also! Took it to the dealer, they said it is normal but when i was doing full stop at the red light, i feel the kick.
Hi David, great video. I love how you covered all a lot of the TRD Pro specific features. Though, I think you missed the BBS Forged Wheels only available for the TRD Pro.
Good review, I’ve had two of the 22 tundras form around 15k miles and the transmission never felt like what you are talking about, they were not hybrid though, maybe it’s a hybrid thing or just your truck?
I want to note you stated the tailgate step was too high to step on but that a step should be integrated in rear bumper like GMC. It seemed contradicting and perhaps the auto step should instead become standard on more trims. Love the channel and great video
I'm not keen on turbo-charged engines in utility vehicles; they generate an incredible amount of heat and pressure; there's also more components which will have to be maintained/recalled/replaced, and I don't think the modest mileage improvement is going to offset the cost of maintaining this kind of setup. I'm also betting that's an aluminum body, that'll be full of shopping-buggy dings, which makes the mileage disparity... taking also into account the 10-speed tranny and lighter block... even more bewildering. This is a performance-based engine, but Toyota didn't even make a performance motor/tranny for the Supra; BMW made that. But for some reason, Toyota is very confident with their design for this vehicle. All most Tundra owners wanted, including myself (2017 Off-Road), was a longer bed... just a foot or two..., some innovative storage solutions--like with the Honda Ridgeline, a front-passenger side floormat which doesn't slide everywhere, A FRIGGIN CHARGING PAD for at least one phone, and a VISIBLE RPM indicator when using tiptronic shifting... really ... that's it. The new body-style is nice, add that on there... that's fine. And the little retractable steppy-thingies... that looks like an afterthought, just take them off. G'lord... you drop the gate, sit on it, swivel, and stand up... otherwise just put a Tommy-gate on there.
Best review I've seen, Thank You! You really take them to task on the short comings. I've been rethinking subscriber service. I welcome abilities to customize my purchase with updates to the way I would drive a very pricey computer laiden equipment/tool. Equipment that does what I need it to do and to fit the environment. I often need to back up with my door open. I believe the transmission issue can be remapped to fit your needs and the horrible gas mileage. But until we get better laws with right to repair I'll be forced to 20 year old equipment I can tweak. Thanks again for an excellent update and look forward to the compare with that solar octane unit.
I HAVE A TERRIBLE PROBLEM ON MY FRONT WINDOW (DRIVER SIDE) WHEN I PLAY MY MUSIC IT MAKE A TERRIBLE NOISE THEY TRY TO FIX THAT PROBLEM FOR 4 MONTHS ALREADY AND THEY CAN'T FIXED THEY TRY TO CONVENCE ME IS SOMETHING NORMAL ON THIS TRUCK I HAVE A PLATINUM ALMOST $80,000 AND THATS SOMETHING NORMAL?
It's likely to do with the speaking rattling when playing music loudly or music with strong bass. This is quite common on many vehicles. Ask them to re-secure the speaker grill or go to a local auto music store and add some sound deadening.
I have a 23 Tundra Platinum and I love it. Have not had an issue with it, but the one thing I absolutely hate is the center console. Feels cheap and too busy. Please Toyota put a Normal center console
Coming from GM products I have. I can relate. I still have to fumble to figure out how to operate AC. I always hit up and down arrows instead of auto or whatever.
Hi ive been watching your videos. your content is awesome. I have a question, i know you also have a Tacoma. I am currently shopping for either a Tacoma or Tundra. I currently have a 2022 Ram 1500 Big Horn and its my 4th Ram Truck and to be quite honest i am fed up with american trucks and vehicles in general due to their quality and customer service. In your opinion what do you like better your new Tundra or the Tacoma. Im tossing around the idea wether i need a full size truck again. Thanks, Reeve
I got word yesterday that I will be getting my '23 TRD Pro by late November. Edit: David do you have the part number/name for your TRD running boards? Thanks.
What's the payload rating on your truck? The Toyota website says "Up to 1,600 pounds" but there really aren't any options so it shouldn't fluctuate much.
Hi David. You previously were a big fan of the Toyota tonneau cover, so it sounds like they made changes for 2022 that changed your opinion. Which would you recommend then? I’m glad to hear this review before I get my truck so I don’t make the same mistake. Have you heard anything about firmware updates for the audio system? I don’t want to pay a subscription for remote start on my key fob.
I think this tonnuea cover (bakflip) will be OK if the quality was better. I was going to buy the undercover ones but honestly I think the diamondback are the best (though expensive). There has been some firmware updates but not to impact the subscription program. You will still need the subs to use remote.
Hello, i am a new owner of a Tundra 2022, and i hear some noise in the bed when driving over bumps, The dealer told me thats normal for a pickup trunk to be noiser when the bed is empty., Do you hear some noise on your Tundra??
This video makes us to confuse Tundra's prices. For example the MSRP of the Red and Black Interior Iformax TRD PRO's prices and TRD PRO Desert Chase Offroad's price are not revealed by this video. Please try to record a new video explaining the prices of the Desert Offroad and TRD PRO separately. Thank you. Dr. Luis Amador.
11.7 MPG?? That is a deal breaker for me. The whole point of this new engine was to be more effecient than the old V8 5.7L. I thought this was going to chip away at the F-150 but MPG numbers like that, Toyota could have done much better than that. I was driving my cousin's 2019 TRD Pro and that really is an amazing engine. Performance aside, it gives off this sense that it will never fail.
Not sure what your experience level is off road but lots of people use Wild Peak AT3Ws off road on some serious trails. I know many people that have switched from KO2s and won’t go back to them. They were on my LX when I bought it and they work great. Only reason I would not get them again is if I found something that would work better in the mud but still work great on road. Which is where most people spend most of their time. Maybe if I get my wife her own LX or LC I’ll turn this into a dedicated overland rig and get mud tires.
My truck came with a soft cover. So I bought a Leer with the same method as back flip. All the issues he mentioned with the back flip, I had with Leer. I did not have time to have it repaired so I repaired it myself. It slipped back and blocked tail gate from locking. I slung a brand new in box miter saw out never to see again. So self tapping screws holds it in place
I like the sound of those exhaust even though I'm not used to the sound I'll try to catch you on the live because I had some questions about the twin turbo v-6.I would be nice if they brought some of those back to San Antonio little more caring in the production.
Hello David That’s the exactly transmission shifting issues down shift from 2nd to first gear on my 2017, and 2018 Tacoma limited. It’s really annoying and it’s unacceptable from Toyota products. My Toyota dealer couldn’t do anything about i, so I ended up sold them both.
I actually like it bc it’s essentially engine breaking. On my 21 Tacoma OR. However, a bit annoyingly, when in 3rd or 4th gear, sometimes it lets me coast and sometimes it engine breaks me (downshifting). I wish there was a better way to control that. Like a “coast” vs “downshift” button. But hey, it’s an automatic. That’s why I miss my manual 98 frontier.
Thanks David for the information. Because the dealerships around me are hiking up pricing too much I’m gonna hold off on trading in my 2018. Do you know if Toyota will add or change around exterior color options for the TRD Pro for 2023?
Hmm interesting isn’t Toyota offering a dealer installed lift kit soon for the Tundra and that explains why Toyota would want to void warranties if you lift it through aftermarket and not them.
On the grille, I disagree. The big grille states it's a Tundra, and looks amazing. If you want the Sequoia grill get a Sequoia, because the grille is what differentiates the different series.
I’m excited for you to get a sequoia and review it, I want to order a capstone sequoia but don’t want the white&black interior , so I’ll prolly wait a year and see if they offer another color . Do you think they will offer another interior color next year ??
have same exact TRD PRO but in black, here in Ontario....so same Canadian model spec. First long distance drive this weekend yielded 20.9mpg average for highway. In town, It's pretty horrific to be honest and I was sitting at around 12.5...but I had it in sports mode most of that time enjoying the new hybrid engine.
@@AutomotivePress that’s good….mine sounds like if it’s like an old car with sway bar links /bushings blown out has that same sound from the rear …. I’m bringing it to the dealership on Aug 30 2 guys from Toyota is coming down to inspect my trd pro and another customer ls sr5 model doing same thing
Hi David, i have a solar octane Trd Pro. Just wanted see what you would suggest for my issues: 1. Paint chipping/ peeling on the edge of Driver’s door. Dealer said they will reach out to toyota and think its most likely happened when they were removing all the tapes that toyota put on while shipping from the manufacturing plant. They also said, toyota might not provide a solution. If that happens, what would you recommend i should do? Just doesnt make sense that toyota charges over $400 for the special color and not do anything to make it right. 2. So on my passenger side mirror, the blind spot light comes on only on the half portion of the little detector that they have.
It's a bit difficult to diagnose and recommend without viewing your issue, but my guess is that the paint issue is from the dealer's prep work (paint doesn't peel off that easily, as there is a clear coat on top of the paint). If it's a dealer's error, Toyota won't cover it obviously. Again, hard to say without seeing the actual damage. For the blind spot, it could be a bad sensor. You should get the dealer to report this and get the part replaced. Hope this helps.
So they took the V8 away and now the little V6 gets worse economy than competitors' V8's! Things like squeaks and cheap console, etc. looks like Toyota really fell short on this truck. RAM, GM and Ford are still light years down the road vs. Toyota.
Surprised no mention of the limited vision out the front windshield. Gas mileage is ridiculous for a hybrid no less. Access to bed is not well thought out either. Then there is that cheap center console. They should not wait to make these improvements.
I don’t see the red interior aging well or helping in future resale popularity. There a reason why black, grey, and brown interior colors have remained popular for decades.
I bet maintenance wise the cost is a lot different. Especial since it is likely braking that regenerates charging in hybrid battery. I wish these reviewers would also cover the maintenance cost side in their reviews. Doesn't have to be exact just a rough cost. I have a subaru crosstrek, at 60,000 km they want me to spend 1000+ dollars for a service C. I don't know about you but that seems rich for a vehicle with only 60,000 km on it.
I think I would rather have a 2022 TUNDRA W V8. Reliable and quality built!

Really great review! You are awesome brother.
I appreciate that!
Awesome videos David!
Thanks, Reeve
for ur running board, did you remove the ome rock slide bar?
I got word yesterday that I will be getting my '23 TRD Pro by late November.
Edit: David do you have the part number/name for your TRD running boards? Thanks.
Congratulations. It's just called the TRD aluminum running board.
@@AutomotivePress Thanks!
@@AutomotivePress Sorry, David one last question: are the boards wide enough to prevent door dings (in parking lots)?
Have deposit on 23 trd pro. Might keep my 4runner while Toyota fixes these problems ????
I would hope that these small things got worked out for the '23 model year. I plan on getting one too.
I think it’s operator preference but adjust to your surrounding and know what you have. Plus it’s simple and operator error.
Please reply
The bed cover and the mat
Let me know the website or link?
Thank you i have 22 Sr5 crewmax
The tonneau cover is the OEM TRD Aluminum running board. The mat is OEM bed mat. Both can be seen in your regional Toyota website under accessories.
@@AutomotivePress thank you for your reply
David very informative best review on youtube!!
Thank you so much!!
It gets sub 12mpg in town with the iForce Max hybrid?
Falken Wildpeak "All-Terrain" are in fact both street and off-road tires.
How many features are subscription based?
Is this full time awd ?
If u leave auto hi beams on with the led light bar they both work together when the hi beams go it’s own mine is setup like that
My friends was getting 17 on hwy and 14 in town. Right before he sold it his turbo was failing! These are shit trucks
Why worry MPG on a truck? At the end this truck will be making 8-9mpg with 35-37 inch tires and 17 inch wheels watch. Worse than the V8
Thank you for sharing... these tires are slightly different than the aftermarket ones you can buy
Yes I have a 2022 BackCountry Ram and have the Wild Peak tires that came on the truck.
Great Tires, much better that the old Goodyear Wrangler tires.
How is the windshield? I've heard that it is very small and you can notice it when driving.
I like the sound of those exhaust even though I'm not used to the sound I'll try to catch you on the live because I had some questions about the twin turbo v-6.I would be nice if they brought some of those back to San Antonio little more caring in the production.
many 2022 trd pro have an aligment issue and outer tire wear , Toyota have not willing to fix this problem, just to buy new set of tires
Are those running boards the OEM Toyota TRD ones? Look great!
Are you going to do an review on the 2023 SEQUOIA
Hello David
That’s the exactly transmission shifting issues down shift from 2nd to first gear on my 2017, and 2018 Tacoma limited. It’s really annoying and it’s unacceptable from Toyota products. My Toyota dealer couldn’t do anything about i, so I ended up sold them both.
It's definitely annoying though it's not as bad as what I had on my 2021 Tacoma TRD Pro.
David quick question. I also own a TRD pro 22. Are you a bit disappointed the a pillars were wrapped black?
No, actually I like them wrapped...
@@AutomotivePress I meant rather than it being a painted piece they decided to vinyl wrap it
Very good honest review.
Thank you!
David, you should know the low seat position is for higher ground clearance.
love those Diamondback covers.
Do you know when they going to have the software fix for the remote start
My 2013 tundra use to clunk upon decelerating when it was new. After 500 miles or so that clunk went away.
How do the grippy bed mats work if you often use ur truck to haul scoops of mulch/gravel? Do u take it out or does it hold up?
It definitely holds up. And you can just take it off and wash it down.
Hopefully Toyota adds the Land Cruiser diesel engine, adds tow hooks, and a better rear bumper design
Diesel is definately not likely, but the other 2 will have a better chance
Thanks David for the information. Because the dealerships around me are hiking up pricing too much I’m gonna hold off on trading in my 2018. Do you know if Toyota will add or change around exterior color options for the TRD Pro for 2023?
Thank you! No change for external color for TRD Pro 2023.
Very good video thank you Sir
Great update. Thank you.
Watch "Lifting Your Toyota will Void the Warranty" on TH-cam by Driven Companion
Hmm interesting isn’t Toyota offering a dealer installed lift kit soon for the Tundra and that explains why Toyota would want to void warranties if you lift it through aftermarket and not them.
It’s only specific dealerships because mine doesn’t care, that’s why you can’t believe everything you see on the internet
Does the Canadian TRD pro model come with a digital rearview mirror? can you confirm?
unfortunately, it does not.
Wow that is TRD emblem with a backwarded D is actually pretty COOL! unique!
That is very possible as they adjust the interior all the time. But typically, the color changes for interior only happens every 3 to 4 years.
I noticed that the 12v outlet is located at the top of the dash...what is your thoughts on that?
It's for things like drive recorder and other items, but I haven't used it yet.
have same exact TRD PRO but in black, here in Ontario....so same Canadian model spec. First long distance drive this weekend yielded 20.9mpg average for highway. In town, It's pretty horrific to be honest and I was sitting at around 12.5...but I had it in sports mode most of that time enjoying the new hybrid engine.
A hybrid engine and you're only getting 12.5 MPG? Wow that is horrible.
Dave go over bumps and make a video and try to hear if there is noises coming from the bed gate area mine does towards the passenger side
I did but mine doesn't have any noise issues over bumps
@@AutomotivePress that’s good….mine sounds like if it’s like an old car with sway bar links /bushings blown out has that same sound from the rear …. I’m bringing it to the dealership on Aug 30 2 guys from Toyota is coming down to inspect my trd pro and another customer ls sr5 model doing same thing
He keeps saying the seats aren't super bright but they look super bright, wonder if they look different in person.
Use the auto adjusting highbeams and leave them on all the time.
I just don't understand why they couldn't get the settings right in the screen. It's far from user friendly
Hi David, i have a solar octane Trd Pro. Just wanted see what you would suggest for my issues:
Hi David, can you share what’s the payload of your TRD Pro? Thanks
Let me check...
@@AutomotivePress any update on this? I'm showing about 1600 or so LBS but wanted to confirm.
@@AutomotivePress Please🙏
So they took the V8 away and now the little V6 gets worse economy than competitors' V8's! Things like squeaks and cheap console, etc. looks like Toyota really fell short on this truck. RAM, GM and Ford are still light years down the road vs. Toyota.
Will gladly swap your dislikes with my Chrysler mountain of problems. Great review!
The headlights of your TRD Pro look like they are not the ones advertised during the release.
Surprised no mention of the limited vision out the front windshield. Gas mileage is ridiculous for a hybrid no less. Access to bed is not well thought out either. Then there is that cheap center console. They should not wait to make these improvements.
My 2014 tundra, 7” lift gets 10.1 mpg
2012 6 inch 35s full bed of tools and etc getting 9.5.
