Very nice! Thank you 🎉 I’m still learning about synths. Could you please explain what does each gear do in this jam? How do you sync them all And what is the output routings here?
Sure thing! So in this set-up the central pieces are the Arturia Keystep controller and the Moog Grandmother. I have the Arturia controlling the Korg FM 2 synth because I find the keypad for the FM is a little too difficult to play. The Arturia Keystep also offers some interesting automation control, like the arpeggiator and the sequencer. I am using the sequencer in "record mode" to play notes and record them. Because the FM is polyphonic, there can be more than one note voice occurring at the same step in the sequence (6 notes at most) so I can kind of make the melody a bit more interesting/complex as I go. The Randy's Revenge is a ring mod effect pedal, I have the output of the FM going through this, which is then going into the KAOSS pad 2, which is a sort of weird multi-effects unit. Lastly in that chain I am using a Boss Tera Echo pedal. These three effects units are what produce the space-like sounds by playing with the modulation rate, delay length/feedback amount and mix. The Moog Grandmother doesn't have any effects on it in this track. It just has a very phat bass line patch and I'm using it's built-in arpeggiator. The Grand Mother makes really sweet sounds all on it's own and doesn't need much! I am syncing the Grandmother to the Volca FM 2, this is because there's no way to "set" the tempo on that synth (it's all analog). Then, I set the drum machine to the same tempo as the Volca FM 2 and just press it at the correct time to have it be in sync. I like having some parts that are not all completely synchronized so I still have something to "play" which gives it a bit of an organic feel (in my opinion). In this regard, occasionally I turn the sequence I've programmed off and just improvise some notes (like at the end). Everything is routed through an Mix8 8-channel mixing board (just outside the camera frame), then two master channels (left and right) are routed to my audio interface (M-Audio M-track solo) which how I pick it up in my recording session (Reaper). Thanks for your interest.
Very Ethereal 🔥
That Grandmother bass patch sounds huge! Super cool jam!
Love what you are doing! Hang in there - your channel will blow up.
Thanks!
Nice!!!
Damn very cool! Love the acoustic drums mixed with the more abstract synth sounds!
Thank you!
Fantastic jam... really enjoyed it. May the oscillator be with you.
Thanks!
