For me it’s between Big Dunc, Tommy Smith and Jimmy Case. The thing about Case was he was stone deaf and a very gifted midfielder. He was better than Souness in my opinion. People are comparing 'hard tacklers' with 'hard cases'. Roy Keane, Vinnie Jones and Paul Ince are hard tackling - but that is where their aggressiveness lay: within the game only. They are too civilised and do not apply their aggression away from the pitch. Hard cases such as Billy Whitehurst, Mick Hartford and Duncan Ferguson are true bruisers who would obliterate the aforementioned players above with minimal effort. As much as I like Keane and Jones, they are all verbal and pantomime - it is an act. Whitehurst and Ferguson, however, are the real deal and would pummel you into the ground on-and-off the field and not think twice about losing their freedom.

For me it’s between Big Dunc, Tommy Smith and Jimmy Case. The thing about Case was he was stone deaf and a very gifted midfielder. He was better than Souness in my opinion. Tommy Smith was intimidation personified and Duncan Ferguson was a freight train of a centre forward.
Then again, if you go further back, you are spoilt for choice. My Grandad used to tell me how Hughie Gallacher used to knock goalkeepers into the net when they caught the ball and regularly left centre halves with no front teeth, despite being only 5’5”. He was like Joe Frazier crossed with Lionel Messi.
