True story. I met Scholes a few times as his uncle was a local at the pub across the road from my house (where my parents were locals) his name was Keith Shard. I remember Keith turning up at my house on my birthday with a card. I’d just got the new United shirt with Scholes on the back, he was my childhood idol. Keith took me to the United vs Arsenal game l, but before that he took me to Scholes’s house and the first thing his wife Claire said to me, a young boy turning up to her house was: ‘Want a brew?’ To this day I am still shook at how down to earth they were. I then went to play Arron on fifa street. Arron was about 8 at the time (Paul’s Son) RIP Keith, I’ll never forget what that man did for me and so many avid football fans in my village. A truly magnificent man. I have a signed shirt from Paul and so many pictures with him. Believe it or not too, he was quiet even in person, Paul Scholes is the most genuine down to earth man I have ever met and for someone worth millions from being a footballer it doesn’t add up, but it’s just because he had one passion and that was it. Football.
Regardless of what people say. Paul Scholes would become a great manager. Experience, desire, man management. Shy guy but his presence would silence a dressing room.
Scholes talking about how Eric Harrison (RIP) drove them on. I read a story today where Phil Neville said he had a text from Harrison asking him to phone him urgently. Harrison tore into Neville for turning his back when defending against Thierry Henry.....................Neville was in his 30's playing for Everton LOL!!
Scholes looks like the young Sir Alex now; his chilling humor and warm smiles are soothing. Though I appreciate his humbleness as much as his football genius, it becomes hard to explain to new generations of fans how great he was. I mean, those amazing long pass and long shot compilations on youtube are great, but hardly adequately reflect the immense presence and quality he provided week in and week out in the United midfield. This man was on his own level above others in the league. Hopefully he'll bring the insights and experience to the managerial position soon. Lastly I want to pay tribute to Hargreaves as well, who possessed special qualities which many fans tend to overlook. Owen would've helped United achieve more trophies if not for the sustaining injuries. The penalty he smashed in during the dire moment of shootout in the UCL final, and the performance in the England shirt against Portugal, deserve to be remembered. Happy New Year!
I couldnt have put it better myself...very well said! And yes Hargreaves was a player of real, genuine quality. He and also Darius Vassel appeared and disappeared around the same time didnt they? Both just sort of vanished! SAF, for me, undid his genius in the later years, with the emotion-based sackings of his legends, but also by failing to vet a successor to Paul Scholes, who was at the centre of Manchester's success. He mustve known, surely, that Giggs and Scholes would retire someday, and that Bale and a local Scholes successor (sure, maybe not As good) would be neccessary in the future. But he didnt find anyone to take over anywhere on the field! (Except De Gea).
Thanks! I think Sir Alex did very well until the end, and constantly adapted our tactics into a very promising direction. Let me enumerate some additional points without putting them into a time sequence. Some of them would be quite brief, as I think we should know the details well enough. 1. The financial situation of the club was not optimal at the time, as in our spending power was quite limited. 2. Barcelona was indeed a dream team, we fought well against the genius of Messi and Iniesta, and lost fairly twice in UCL finals. However, reaching finals three times in four years was still a great achievement. 3. Paul's successor: Luka Modric. Gaffer absolutely loves Modric, and we didn't secure his service. (I can be mumbling for hours on this one). Bale was not essential, Modric was. Fans tend to mourn over Bale since he is from Welsh as Giggs, but we couldn't afford him at 100M evaluation. When he chose Spurs over United after exiting Southampton, we had already missed him. Plus at that time we were not at (and we still are not) in good terms with Levi. Anyway we should've landed Modric at all cost. 4. The development of Cleverley, Anderson, and Welbeck didn't quite meet expectations. They were actually quite good at that stage, but missed the timing of excelling themselves, due to injuries or lack of that spark of talent. But we've seen clearly Sir Alex knew his players so well, knew how much potential these young lads could achieve, and fully believed in them. He also said Evans and Lingard would mature at a later age than their peers. 5. Evolving tactics: acquiring van Persie and Kagawa. Those two acquisitions were very interesting, pointing the direction we're going into if Sir Alex didn't retire. (By the way, personally I rated Kagawa very highly.) I'll continue on these points later.

I'd say Keane gave him a run for his money,,,,fergie talking about Keane,What I noticed about him that day as I was arguing with him was that his eyes started to narrow, almost to wee black beads. It was frightening to watch. And I'm from Glasgow."
Well there was One... Keane. Thats the reason Ferguson decided he had to leave. Which was, I think, the start of United's gradual descent. Until Ferguson and Scholes left, and then the downfall really started..
Stan Dando another reason SAF was one of the best managers ever! Nobody else would've dealt with Keane that way! Imagine Wenger trying to handle that situation
If I'd have been England manager Scholes would have been the very first name on the team sheet. I think opposition managers respected his talents more than England Managers.
I knew that Scholes always had that United mentality when he scored that screamer against Barcelona in the CL semi final. That attempt required great confidence and an attacking mindset. The man who set up others time and time again had the belief in oneself that he was worthy to try such an audacious attempt. When I saw how much space he had I hopefully shouted “shoot” at the telly, to my surprise, he did just that. The rest is history.
Watching this it’s the respect they all still have for fergie now which is the best thing. Not to mention the class of 92 allowed Ferguson to build the squad, and the amount of money it must have saved Utd must be immense.
I'm a Man City fan from Manchester and I think that Paul Scholes was absolutely fantastic and add to that, he was so incredibly humble and nowhere near being a superstar. Even though he was good enough to act like a superstar, but that's not him. A true decent person, who was absolutely world class.
I'm not discrediting any of the greats (Stevie G, Lamps, Xavi, Iniesta etc.) By any means. But Paul Scholes was the absolute soup and there will never EVER be a Midfielder like him ever again! Criminally under appreciated! 🐐
I got stuck on a water slide in Portugal because of the texture of my shorts lol and Paul Scholes was at the bottom laughing at me, he was in the line ahead of me with his family.
Chad Beardmore Yeah, but back in the 90s and 2000s United were very conservative when it came to wages. Both Keane and Ferguson in their autobiographies said that they knew they were taking a salary hit by working for United. Likewise, Mark Hughes said that a pension problem was part of the reason he left them.
It seems strange to say but Scholes is massively underrated. Guy was not only a football genius and far better than Gerrard and Lampard but he's so humble as well. Never caused any aggro or punched any DJ's, just got on with the job and won bucketloads of trophies
as a united fan, im starting to not hate liverpool as much as chelsea and clubs like that tbh, cause atleast we have history and have a working mans past
just to add on Owen's comments about Paul Scholes winning in every games for the side he's on in England training, that applies on Manchester United as well.. Just ask his fellow United mates and they also said that in training matches (11v11 or 5v5), whichever side Paul Scholes is in - wins..
Kevin Adu yh man these managers like pep and Jose can't touch what he did, I know peps Barca beat him in the champs league final twice but pep never built that team they were already there, even now with pep doing what he's doing at city, he already had great players and has spent £400 mil to get there
"Flying Boots" - saved that zinger for the end. Giggs was my hero growing up but I was always in awe of what Scholes could do. Probably second only to Keane & much later Ronaldo for his importance on the team.
money hasn't ruined the game...what ruined it is the respect of money..SAF managed big players on big money..but he didn't care he would drop a player if they weren't putting there all in the game...now managers don't have the minerals to do that ..Sir Alex realize a hunger player can be better than a talented player ….United need to get players who are hungry and happy to play for United
These days players are paid so much money before really proving themselves so it's hard to expect the type of dedication and desire that players back in the day had. Scoles and his generation had to earn their millions while today players are gifted too much too early.
Honestly, I think that Mourinho should bring Paul Scholes into the fold as a coach. He is part of the furniture of United. He knows it inside and out, especially with style of play. If Scholes walked in as the assistant he would silence the room with his presence alone. He is a genius in terms of controlling games on the pitch and his assessment of Pogba was bang on. Pogba needs to be effecting the game up the field near the strikers. Not as a deep lying midfielder. I think Mourinho needs fresh faces around him in terms of coaching. Ferguson always rotated his coaching staff and it clearly helped.

Kevin Adu yh man these managers like pep and Jose can't touch what he did, I know peps Barca beat him in the champs league final twice but pep never built that team they were already there, even now with pep doing what he's doing at city, he already had great players and has spent £400 mil to get there
he can't be GOAT man, he's only 2 ( and very sketchy at that, barely in 99 by crazy late goals, penalties in 2008 ) Champions leagues.
@@Athal1991 🤦
"Flying Boots" - saved that zinger for the end.
Giggs was my hero growing up but I was always in awe of what Scholes could do.
Probably second only to Keane & much later Ronaldo for his importance on the team.
Used to see him in his school uniform kicking a ball about with his pal's on Langley
Used to deliver there regularly. Had a good laugh with people in the shops there. Northerners are friendly.
Thank God I grew up watching Paul Scholes playing.
Not many can reach his level of success an keep both feet on the ground.
It's a real shame that injury problems ruined Hargreaves career, he could have been a great player for us.
💯Had it all. tenacious, great technique, good passer and wonderful set pieces.
Yep, still picked up a Champions league winners medal and the Premier League tho so not too shabby
@@yessir6947 Not too shabby indeed.
Outstanding player
Scholes what a legend.
Fell in love with United because of 92
In comparison to today's era, what they're explaining without actually saying it, is that money has ruined the game....
People have been complaining about that for decades. Money has always been the deciding factor in football. Just bigger sums now.
Not to mention those betting operators
Money has always been a part of football, definitely not the deciding factor though.

money hasn't ruined the game...what ruined it is the respect of money..SAF managed big players on big money..but he didn't care he would drop a player if they weren't putting there all in the game...now managers don't have the minerals to do that ..Sir Alex realize a hunger player can be better than a talented player ….United need to get players who are hungry and happy to play for United
I’m an Arsenal man and even I have to admit Keown was an absolutely arse to the opponent but I did love it
Martin keown is surprisingly well spoken .
The true winner mentality. Something that's getting more and more difficult to find in footballers today.
With Scholes it wasn't about numbers and stats, it was about how he controlled his team. A team that won everything.
IMO scholes is one of the most underrated players as midfielder
Only got to see him play live once, so fortunate.
Absolute baller. No midfielder better in his generation
All the great home grown players we've produced over the years like scholes etc. We have never had a goalie come through like that. Very strange.
Imagine being the England manager and not playing him, in his right position.
Scholes, my Best Midfielder of all Time.
There will never be a group of young talented players like that again in football.
Scholesy. Your favourite player, favourite player..
If that class of footballlers came through nowadays Jose would sell Scholes, Giggs, and Beckham but keep the Neville brothers
another plastic brand ambassador who can't handle the truth.
There's no way he'd get rid of Beckham. Becks was a solid and tactically intelligent and disciplined player. Jose would love him to no end.
Mctominay is getting regular time for us? Rashford, Lingard who aren't top level players (yet) play for regularly too.
nah, even the neville brothers werent tall enough for Jose
Paul scholes best passer I’ve ever seen
1:40 someone give scholes one more appearance ffs
Init bro 😂
The best central midfielder of the past 25 without anyone coming anywhere near him, no contest.
Guy is a subject to study in La Masia... ultimate legend
I saw his debut im a long suffering port vale fan 😁
I hv followed scholes but he is the best ever midfielder of all tym
Scholes is in my opinion together with Xavi the best for the last 20 years and among the best ever !
But honestly, i'd say Pirlo, Zidane and Steve was on par.
Forget Lampard, he was a goalscorer
Scholesy, one of the most clinical tacklers of the game ever.
Hate to say it as a Liverpool fan... but Scholes was just unreal him and xavi! Best ever! Gerrard was great but Scholes was just unreal!
Great interview, great player. Wish he'd played for Liverpool
where is the next Paul Scholes? England need someone like him in midfield
I love this 🔥🔥
Role model great great player
These days players are paid so much money before really proving themselves so it's hard to expect the type of dedication and desire that players back in the day had. Scoles and his generation had to earn their millions while today players are gifted too much too early.
I love when he said me and Nicky used kick lumps out of each other everyday. Coming of training with blood. That why they were so good and winners.
Legend
Reporter to Zidane: "What is it like to be the best midfielder in the world?"
Zidane: "I don't know. Ask Paul Scholes".
Scholes wouldnt silence anyone coz no one has respect these days ...thats how the new generation is ...money is all that matters !
