  • This is a 2-hour bullet chess tournament, Lichess Titled Arena Jan. 2019, I provided commentary on while specifically observing World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen compete. I livestreamed this event at twitch.tv/ChessNetwork. Lichess Titled Arena Jan. 2019 is held for titled chess players only, namely Grandmasters, International Masters, FIDE Masters, National Masters etc... Magnus Carlsen played under the account "DrNykterstein". This was the 10th "Titled Arena" held by lichess.org. Its $1,000 prize pool goes to the top 5 players, with 1st - $500, 2nd - $250, 3rd - $125, 4th - $75, and 5th - $50. This tournament was played on January 5th, 2019.

      It is sort of absurd to think that - in this day and age of time format specialists and asian kids that can do 20 moves per second - the undisputed world champion and (since forever) highest rated player in the classical time format eats up GMs in bullet like this. You can praise Fischer, Kasparov, Capablanca, Tal and Lasker as much as you like, there has definitely never been an allround player as good as Carlsen.

    • @kasparov9
      @kasparov9 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Kasparov never played bullet so you can't really compare. Kasparov's stretch of dominance is still at least twice as great as Carlsen's at the moment. Magnus has a way to go yet. I read in chessmetrics that no one came within 10 elo of Kasparov for 18.5 years.
      Where Caruana and Karjakin both drew Carlsen in the last 2 championships in the classical portion. He has been more impressive in fast time controls. And remember in Kasparov time they didn't have world blitz championship every year.
      He is phenomenal though. Right up there.

    • @kasparov9
      @kasparov9 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right he lost as black, but playing white he drew Garry, and if you go over the game Garry clearly underestimated Carlsen, and played a really arrogant line thinking Carlsen will crack under the complications.
      If they replayed another 10 games, Garry knowing know how strong the youngster is would have played solid openings and beat him easily. It was still a good achievement for Carlsen, who beat Karpov in the same event. @TomCasey

    I'm not going to lie, when I see some commentators, or Carlsen himself, saying "Magnus is losing it"...it baffles me. Yes, his motivation may be diminished, but he utterly dominates the field in nearly every time control.

    • @noobmaster31
      @noobmaster31 5 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      He is the best in every time control. He is the world champion. He dominates the online platform whenever he plays. There is no dispute that he is a genius at chess. Commentators who say he's losing it are usually the ones who have already lost it.

    • @erikskov7246

      Losing it? Come on, he hasn’t peaked yet! He will most likely peak between the age of 33 and 38! But the problem could be that he can’t get any higher than he is, what more can become than Champion of the World! IMO.

    If Carlsen gets connected pawns you're in trouble. And he starts with eight of them.

    Hey Jerry, at the 7 minute mark on the original twitch stream, both Magnus Carlsen and Zhigalko missed a mate in one during one of their warm up games. Thought it was funny that everyone seemed to miss it, even in the chat

    @1:39:09 Do the math. Carlsen won 23 games in a row, which equals 88 points. If he'd lost every single game before that streak started, by the time the streak ended he would have been tied for 4th. Magnus was in God mode.

    34:36 I was equally shocked by Rg2, Jerry. Not just because the Nb3 was defending c1, but that the move is totally illogical; there's no situation in which it would work, because if the knight wasn't there, you'd just play Rc1+ directly and mate!

    1:13:08 Queen takes h1 would actually be an excellent move on black's behalf only if there wasn't a perpetual check by white forcing the black king to go to e7 and blocking the vision of the e rook, making it perfectly fine for the white rook to take on h1 as the black rook no longer defends the e pawn, therefore it can't promote.

    Hey Jerry. Odd question about you instead of the game. When I watch your earlier videos you are very flat by comparision. Now you're much more dynamic and fun to listen to, even for instructional videos. Did that come with experience, or did you study and actively work on that? It's really night and day.
