- This is a 2-hour bullet chess tournament, Lichess Titled Arena 9, I provided commentary on while specifically observing World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen compete. I livestreamed this event at twitch.tv/ChessNetwork. Lichess Titled Arena 9 is held for titled chess players only, namely Grandmasters, International Masters, FIDE Masters, National Masters etc... Magnus Carlsen played under the account "DrNykterstein". This was the 9th "Titled Arena" held by lichess.org. Its $1,000 prize pool goes to the top 5 players, with 1st - $500, 2nd - $250, 3rd - $125, 4th - $75, and 5th - $50. This tournament was played on December 15th, 2018.
I'm a self-taught National Master in chess out of Pennsylvania, USA who was introduced to the game by my father in 1988 at the age of 8. The purpose of this channel is to share my knowledge of chess to help others improve their game. I enjoy continuing to improve my understanding of this great game, albeit slowly. Imagine working nonstop for your entire life to perfect this incredibly complex game. Tens of thousands of hours. Scholastic tournaments. Books. Lessons. Staring at endgames and tactics puzzles until you fall asleep. Learning dozens of openings out to ten or fifteen moves and constantly updating your theory. You progress to the point where you are stronger than over 99% of anyone who ever picked up a pawn. Then Magnus gives you eight moves and still beats you while drinking and listening to music.
I know bullet and classical aren't the same thing, but this is an absolutely mind-blowing display of how good Magnus is.
"Who's that guy? I don't know, some grandmaster. Let's give him 6 moves in a row".
@Schism Circle yea there's no way your beating a gm like that though
Schism Circle you beat GMs without ever studied theory? Yea right
@Schism Circle no, grandmasters recognize similar positions from previous matches and games they've played so therefore they don't have to calculate every single line because they've seen the position before.
Or be like me and just read the rule book along with how the pieces move and trounce everybody based on that knowledge alone. Theory is overrated and intuition is completely useless when one has knowledge of pure logic. Chess is just like tic-tac-toe to me. Just make the right move.
They told me to study carlsens games. Look at me learning strong openings
LOL

I love Carlsen because of stuff like this he does. People call him arrogant but I think he just enjoys himself.
This is why I love Carlsen. The game is fun again! He is the champion that chess deserves.
2:02:55 That pause when he saw ferrari9182 [The nemesis] on the list of players.
I love when Carlsen clowns around.
Magnus joking around with ridiculous troll openings in several games and still wins the tournament over the likes of Andrew Tang who's one of the best online bullet players in the world. Gives his 2800-rated GM opponent 6 free moves and he's winning by move 20. Just unreal.
I just love how excited and enthusiastic Jerry is about Chess! He's such a loveable guy, thanks for all you do Jerry!
Only Magnus gets away with bongcloud against GMs
nakamura did it against aronian and won so...
@@FR33Willi he lost that match.
@@FR33Willi he lost

I watched the stream, pretty sure magnus was intoxicated...
Magnus feeling real confident after crushing Caruana at WCC
Tbh, Carlsen deserved the draw at 13:05 after defending that.
Nope, got what he deserved after playing with his toy opening.
@@00bikeboy you're interesting aren't you
he actually missclicked Kxg6 by accident and that's why he did not take that pawn, it was just bad luck
@@00bikeboy He was winning on the board though
He played like a jackass against a 3000 , he deserved to lose
I have not stopped refreshing my TH-cam feed for 48 hours straight waiting for this upload... Inject this stuff right into my veins 😤
You could always check his twitch account if you're that impatient.
Jerry would be able to draw all this games
Against alphazero in classical
Lol
I like that this has become a new running gag
I love that the world championship has created this new meme.
lol
That "switcheroo" at 7:00 just caught me off big time. I didn't even realize what happened until Jerry explained it lol.
Nykter means sober in norwegian.
Nykter means more sober from drugs. The Norwegian word for sober(alcohol) is edru.
@@babyshoesforsale.neverused9440 nykter is a perfectly suitable word to use for sober from alcohol, but with the meaning of permanently/semi-permanently sober, like "clean" would be for drugs.
Edru is more used as a current status, not past or future.
@@Whiskypapa Let's agree to disagree:)
@@babyshoesforsale.neverused9440 You're wrong tho :p
there is no way this kid drinks heavily or smokes weed anyway. Probably a few drinks from times to times in social setting and whatnot, but that's all
Looks like Magnus really loves the si-silly-an openings
31:31 Carlsen's Bong Cloud opening against penguingim1
So can we all vote to name that opening “Magnus’s Triangle”?
"Transvestite Opening" copied from the comment below.
It's a Bongcloud variation, a Norwegian tradition
@@derais_music I think I heard something about one of these Bongcloud variations being called "Improved Bongcloud, Hotbox Variation" 😂
this DrNykterstein guy is actually pretty good! If he works some on his openings and such we might have a future world champion?
nah I think drunkenstein is a much better contender for next year.
You’re drunk and High at the same time hahaha
Nykterstein vs Drunkenstein incoming
Gotta love how Magnus is so good that he just styles on other GMs with knight shuffles and mirror king/queen swapping.
carlsen playing the transvestite opening my life is complete
thumbnail on point as always
Dr. Soberstien? Nykter means sober in Swedish and Norwegian and Swedish are close in terms of pronunciation.
@@coosoorlog Cool to know! I love learning about language and culture
Soberstoned.
Magnus has previously used a name Dr Drunkenstein
@@ShortyGetLowInTheClubOGBulletM Ah yes! This makes sense. He was drunk. Now he's sober!
@@jfumusic1 Crushed it while drunk, almost lost while sober... Seems odd to me
Actually, this was quite instructive.
If nothing else, it demonstrated how most of the top GM's rely so heavily on opening lines and theory.
I was amazed at how Carlsens "knight shuffle" completely flummoxed so many GM's.
How is it possible to give a grandmaster 6 free moves at the start of the game, and still win ?
So, in the final analysis, the question needs to be asked, that in the modern game, is memory often more important than tactical awareness ? If you had the memory capacity to remember millions of positional solutions, then theoretically, you wouldn't even have to know the rules of chess at all to win.
So often in tournaments today, we see top players look away from the board, stare at the sky, and then make a move. We all know what's going on.
Rats in a maze. As long as the maze stays more or less the same, the rats learn the maze. But when a new maze is introduced, only the genuinely smart rats find their way out !
Very well put! Would love to see this play in real tournament. (or at least see someone test it).
This is just a personal preference; it is easier on my eyes. I like that you too are using the dark backgroud on lichess. Keep it up the great chess content, man :). I have told will tell everyone your my chess mentor.
Carlson is just taking them out of thir comfort zone with some surrealism.
What a treat! Thank you as always, Jerry. Love you work
Loved when he charged up to f3 with his king to inspire his pieces with a very short speech.
The enthusiasm and joy you show when commentating on these games is infectious!
Almost all of the actual strategy and tactics at such a level of play flies over my head, but watching these videos and hearing you talk about what's happening with this much care for the game makes me want to keep learning and improving!
The only commentary worth waiting two days for. 😁
Thanks for the upload alphajerry
Jerry! Thanks for this! I really enjoy all your content!
I love these. Keep em coming.
Rebecca Harris bongclouding Magnus in response to his king queen swap was fantastic
18:35 best game ever
Please add "ever"
@@ragilmalik done (:
@@BattleFieldGalaxy nice 😂😂😂 thanks man
11:30 Qxg5+ would've been a nice follow-up to a very strong sequence of opening moves.
True Entertainment! We should all try the Queen King switch variation against 2800s.
13:00 I watched Carlsens stream live, and he mouse slipped and screamed out loud.
He's really playing for the fans in this arena. he knows he owes his fans a bit of fireworks after the world championship !
Love Jerry's commentary - keep it up.
I just noticed how sublime your arrow making is
Thank you for sharing this video Jerry.
Wow Jerry ! You're predicting so many good moves. You must be IM strength!
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!!
Magnus HAD TO HAVE thoroughly enjoyed that. To go into a tournament with mostly other masters and play ridiculous openings and do so well had to have been thrilling.
The first couple of openings were the fabled bongcloud opening, invented by Grand Master Hikaru Nakamura.
Hi Jerry, what mic are you using?
the commentary in this channel is better than watching GMs commentate.. Just a smoother speaker
Thanks @ChessNetwork I enjoyed it.
why nakamura isnt playing titled arena?
The thumbnail is golden 10/10
Jerry when are you going to post videos of you playing?
yeah, i was waiting for this, thank u jerry!
Jerry is a lovely dinosaur
Jerry switched to a black background damn, 2018 ending on a good note.
Magnus trollsen
I love watching Daniel Naroditsky aka RebeccaHarris work on Magnus Carlsen. He is a very sharp GM and he gives Magnus a workout. I've seem him adopt Magnus a few times on lichess.
Hey jerry could you do a chess analysis on the TCEC season 14 games?? That would be amazing.
I would love to see you play in a few of these games!
Jerry's having so much fun with this
Oh man!! You born for giving Chess commentary... love it😘
Don't kissy face another man.
@@SeanEmman lol😂😂
17:43 Was there something wrong with the Nf6 fork on move 34? I guess probably Re5 would be the counterattack...
Sneaky Bishop on the rim - takes Knight.
Watched on another channel since your upload took some time, even though I prefer to watch with your insights.
Anyone got the link to penguins feed? It's always exciting to watch chess with Jerry.
Carlsen being a cheeky boi today.
What an era to be a chess fan.
I truly love your channel!
😎
"Fancy!" = My favourite Jerry saying
Love your vids!
You are the Bob ross of chess
Fisher used to play like this. Just random moves to get his opponents out of book. You don't beat Carlsen on having to think for yourself.
What does the wing next to the player's name mean?
Jerry have you ever played Grand Chess (with “Chancellor” = N+R, “General” = N+B)?
Are we having fun yet?? Heck yeah! Another great video Jerry.
Why wizard in 35:00 didn’t do Bf4?? Isn’t it check and win the queen?
51:55 "Beefy!" -- Jerry ChessNetwork, December 2018
At 1:05:13, couldn't he pick up the exchange with Nb6?
Great stuff! Dr is unbelivable
How come your lichess looks so clean and updated?
How does yours look like?
The best part about the first penguin game is not only did he play the crazy opening but Carlsen didn't even use his A1 rook the entire game and still smacked penguin around!!
Just noticed this, but the outro music is c'mon c'mon c'mon by Switchfoot
That oppening increasesd my ranking by 100 points. No body had any clue what happening its awesome
How can they play so fast ? I can barely see the pieces moving... amazing
Carlsen just does not give a single care in the world. The Queen/King switcheroos had me ROLLING
Hey chess network did you just play a bullet arena and got second place?
Can someone explain to me how they're moving so fast in that game that ended around 13:00??? Like I get they can pre-move and all but geeeez it's still insanely fast. Are they on computer or tablets using both hands or what?
they have insanely quick mouse clicks
Anyone know who is "wizard98"??
After watching penguingm's video, i waited patiently for this one :) for a full coverage of my 2 favorite players
1:15:42 Please someone explain to me why Nh5+ !??
6:55 loooooooooool I didn't know there was a jerry video watching those XD
This is very entertaining chess
'As long as the pawn is about you are going to one day promote to a knight and I'm going to weave a mate'
He plays a game I do not know. And I can simply just applaud the majesty and magic of Carlsen.
I love this.. having fun, because you want to... and happen to be able to get away with it too.
31:33 settles the goat debate.
What a troll
Jerry, Thanks for that! I do realy like your comments on this.
I see, Carsen is playing sober tonight. Scary
‘Penguin got the bird’ lol
i should be learning something for math test, instead im watching this, nice
Gotta love jerry's reaction
