@@lacombar A lot of these dual wheel forklifts have a surprisingly small lifting capacity. What Wes already has might lift just as much. May not be worth the effort of repairing it, although I guess he could sell it. They're always in demand.

@@lacombar Yeah, that's what I mean. I've see quite a few lifts like Wes's that are rated at 8000 - 12000 lbs. They call them box car units. I'm sure they make dual wheel lifts that rate more than that but I've personally never seen one rated more than 8000 and quite a few at 6000. Always surprised me. They look like they should be able to handle a bundle. I'm guessing Wes's is probably 6000.

Your Propane tank remark jogged a memory. It was July 4th of about 1992 or 1993 I think. We lived in this rural community of about 1500 people in a mountainous area. There was 1 main road in and out and it was hemmed in by steep hills that would frequently collapse during the winter. There was a dirt road that paralleled the main road for a good distance and was used as a bypass in emergent conditions. Well, Loch Lomond Reservoir was a popular tourist destination during the summer time and it would draw lots of people. It would have made more sense to put the main entrance on Newell Creek Rd instead of West Dr in Lompico, but I doubt the County thought of that when they made the reservoir. Anyhow, someone in an RV/camper decided to get a LARGE propane tank filled in town, now mind you it's illegal to carry more than ~40gal of propane in a tank that's not designated a DOT approved tank, but I guess they had at least 40gal on board. What didn't click for them was that the tank was leaking a little bit. At some point the gas concentration reached stoichiometric and the tank caught fire, that was exactly at the narrowest point in the road with a shear face on the left and 3 large Redwood trees in the creek on the right. What compounded the situation is that this was opening weekend for the reservoir after several years of closure due to low water levels and cars were lined up and down the road. Basically all the fire dept could do was keep the woods from catching on fire while the truck burned down.

He went and bought a bulldozer and all the equipment he needed to make the road and they denied him a permit to make the road. Then after finally being at the end of his rope he made a concrete shell to fully in case the bulldozer with cameras in plexiglass on the outside and no way out and went on a rampage through the town, destroying the store that blocked his road and going through town I don't think he actually even harmed anyone except himself and maybe the cops.

The DOT should not have a sense of humor I know when I was driving truck I came across two trucks that had the whole wheel hub and tires come off a truck and one almost killed a couple on the interstate they were lucky and that's because there are companies that don't bother doing basic maintenance on the trucks. I had a few trailers before I was supposed to pick up and drive a few states loaded and found the trailer had mostly bald worn sidewall tires on it and I refused the load because I was not risking my life or anyone else's life hauling that trailer anywhere until it had new tires on the thing.

I've had 2 experiences with my local fire department. 1. A tenant call me to say my apartment building is on fire and the fire department is there I am 15 minutes away I get there and it was a mattress fire a quick thinking fireman grabs the burning mattress smashes a window and throws it out the 2nd story window ! The good' no water damage, no fire damage and just a little smoke damage to one apartment. Mind you this had all happened before I was called. The bad, I drive 15 minutes and when I get there the burning mattress is leaning up against the building still on fire and has been for at least 15 minutes and no one is putting it out. I run up flop off the building just as someone shows up with a extinguisher 2 firemen wrestling with a hose that was never used looked so disappointed. 2 windows scorched black and melted vinyl siding reaching up 20 feet. The other time they saved my life after I was electrocuted..... I love those guys

Well just by looking at the "good" tires I can tell you maintenance didn't seem to be a high priority. That trailer has seen some miles and those tires have been along for the ride quite awhile.
Way to go for helping out and bringing us along for the story.

I remember one time years ago driving by some 18 wheeler and noticing one of the inside trailer tires had blown, but the tread and a bit of the sidewall was still intact and it was just free wheeling on the pavement and bouncing side to side between the outer tire and inner trailer beam. I managed to get the drivers attention, but he was like "all is good! I just got like 5 miles to go!"
Meanwhile the tire was shedding bits of metal belt and rubber chunks and flinging it at the cars behind him, dodging the pieces of tire to avoid a broken windshield.

I've got a "Stodd" trailer, of similar configuration. Very heavy. I had it goosenecked after I sold the dump truck that it came with, which made it even heavier (over 6,000#). It uses 8 14.5 lowboy tires. I think it was made in Waterloo, IA by Stoddard Manufacturing.
I think there is advantage, as far as ease of pulling, in that axle/tire setup, but changing an inside flat on a loaded one is a {deleted expletive} even when weather conditions are ideal.

Once close to here someone stole some horses in the pitch black dark. The rustlers also stole a trailer to haul the Horses. Trouble was that trailer did not have a floor in it. and those horses apparently werent fast enough runners to keep up. they found the trailer and dead horses abandoned on the road.

That was very dramatic, but it also goes to show how fire can easily erupt out of control. From the wheels the flames went upwards to......the wooden planks and then the forklift. In the circumstances who would have thought that could happen. Be vigilant and stay safe!!

On a related note, I was working on a wooden chair one night, about 11, there was a noise of tyres and a bang. I took a walk around the corner to have a look. There were a few other people approaching the scene of an accident, but no sign of any cars. A hobo was sitting on a wheel, complete with half a strut, the axle with CV joints, and tie rods. When I asked him what the hell, he said the car (a VW Golf) had hit the barrier and then driven away, leaving the wheel there. How the hell did he manage that, driving away with one front wheel missing? I never did find out...

I had to complete a fire fighting course sponsered by NASA to further my employment with an industrial hydraulics manufacturing company. We built industrial machinery for the offshore industry. One thing that was covered in the course is using a fire extinguisher. You have to make a quick decision about extinguisher's. Abouut all an extinguisher is good for is around 60 seconds, if the fire is too big or spread to the point of it will take more than a minute then forget using the extinguisher and get to safety, it is now a job for the professional fire fighting team. Number one factor involved is safety....
