  • The F40PH ("F" meaning full width body, "40" being the model number, "P" meaning passenger locomotive, and "H" meaning Head end power), or Screamer as some may call it, is a passenger locomotive built by Electrive Motive Diesel with 3,000 horsepower. Originally built for Amtrak, but later went on to commuter rails after Amtrak began retiring their fleet. Since it didn't have a second engine for the Head end power to power the passenger cars like newer locomotives, the locomotive had to constantly run at 893 rpm, notch 8, even at station stops to generate enough power for the alternator to power the coaches, which is what gave these locomotives the nickname "screamer".
This locomotive in particular, TRWX 130, was originally built as AMTK 274 until Amtrak retired it around the year 2000. Next owner being the New Jersey Transit, following that would be AMTL in 2011 till about 2015. Then made a visit to MBTA for a few years. Later LTEX, a locomotive leasing company, got ahold of it along with other F40s from the MBTA. In 2021 the TRE purchased 2 F40PHs, being the LTEX 270 (now TRWX 131) and 274 and sent them to Progress Rail to have them have a complete rebuild. TRE recieved them in late December of 2021 But didn't start service until March of 2022.
    Thanks for watching!

I've been thinking about taking my high end audio gear to Union Station to get a good recording of this engine.
Also, thanks for your explanation of what F40PH is in the description. I didn't know any of that info.

This was the day I literally happened to run into you while attempting to capture that F40PH! And if you get a chance to, do you still have that photo that you took of me while I was filming this particular train leave? Because I would like to see it at some point. Glad I got to see you! Hope you made it back home safely.

In my opinion, I feel like TRE should have started getting newer locomotives instead of the F40ph. All of their engines except for the 2 phi's are over 30 years old. Parts and reliability are going to be an issue for them unless TRE can find a way to maintain or rebuild those locomotives for much longer(hopefully, they can). I did hear I dont know if its true or not that they might get new cabs cars (similar to Go transit current cab cars) or reverting 1048 and 1049 back to cab cars

I think TRE is rebuilding their F59s. 126 got a rebuild recently

@@Ferromexfan4081 that would be good and if so, maybe we'll see the f40s more often

The SC44s were considered but Trinity Metro preferred the F40s. The F59s only got repainted, not rebuilt. The only ones that got rebuilt were the 569 and 570. And there are no plans of getting new cabcars or reconverting the 48 and 49 back.

@@North_Texas_Railfan I heard from TH-cam user deepchillwolf that 126 was in the shops getting rebuilt and that was back in Oct. It returned to service in Dec 2022 after the rebuild. And he also mentioned that TRE has a cabcar shortage currently and they need a total of 11 cabcars to not b in the shortage and since they have 8 rn they need 3 more

@@Ferromexfan4081 I’m not sure if 126 actually got rebuilt or simply repainted. It apparently has been having a lot of maintenance issues lately. About the cab car shortage, all I know is that they need 1002 back.
