The video: A recording I made of a couple of runs of the Continental R-670, also known as the W670-9A, during Park Farm weekend in the village of Thorney in the UK on the 12 June 2022. It is hoped that the engine can be installed in the Buffalo LVT behind the engine at some time in the future.

They were used in the Stuart M3 tank. The cooling shroud and fan are original equipment....that unique pointy fan guard grill was added later probably by the builder of this ground running engine.....

The m3 Stuart had two Cadillac V8’s and dual Hydromatic transmissions.
Early m-4 Sherman’s and m-18 hellcats had them.
How reliable were they.. Vs the other engines in the day..
We had one of these new in the crate. It was beautiful. We used it for parts for our Stearman Biplane engine which was the W-670 220 hp aero version. The tank engine has domed pistons and produces 250 hp.
Radial startups give me goosebumps every time. Never gets old!
Something I heard someone say once about these venerable radial engines. In a radial engine, at startup the cylinders will meet in committee to decide which one will fire first.

Beautiful sounding engine, very responsive to accelerate commands. Unbelievably difficult to start up, would definitely be reluctant to count the amount of cranks that engineer had to use. Great exercise, but requires intensive training and youthful ability.

There is an M3 tank setting on display in a cemetery near me that still has one of these in it.
A lot of effort went into putting on the display.

@@EyePeterborough it reminded me of this motorcycle i had. it was very loud, but you could cover the exhausts with your hands and it was almost silent minus a small ticking noise like a sewing machine.
He's a little anxious with that for extinguisher. Looked like he was about to use it when the other guy was winding.
Radials by design are known to have a high risk of breaking into flames.
those are exhaust bangs due to unburnt fuel exploding in the headers. you can even see the flames shoot out the exhausts pipe on the left side.
backfiring is different, it would backfire and then almost stall until it sucked in all the burnt up fuel and oxygen in the intake before it ran again. very common on carbureted engines.

That's truly remarkable they were used in a tank. As loud as it is the version we see here must be somewhat modified. Very nice engine though. Virtually an aircraft engine for sure. I'm wondering now what fuel use would be like? And maintenance periods for this is?
Wiki says 13 gallons an hour at crusing speed but I assume thats under load? It is less in the current configuration. At UK prices that would be around £100 per hour to run it.

It does! Air cooled engines often have a similar sound, since there is no cooling jacket to mask the sound of the valves opening and closing.
@@jackroutledge352 you would be surprised how much noise valve train makes in a water cooled engine look up Spintron it is a machine they use to test cams and lifters and valves I. the engine block

Fair observation! If I recall correctly, it isn't actually a spring starter, per se, but a means to manually turn the engine through a few revolutions to clear oil from the bottom cylinders so it does not hydro-lock when starting. That ratchet clicking is there to prevent the engine from kicking backwards - 670 cubic inches will toss you quite a distance if it kicks back. On the aircraft version, first step before lighting it, is to manually turn the prop through a few revolutions to clear the cylinders before switching on the mags (larger radial aircraft, the ground crew would physically walk the prop through several revolutions). M3 and M4 tanks lack of prop, necessitated this handy invention. I can't recall if these had actual hand crankable inertial starters in addition to electric. Ahh, the days of technology that can and would hurt you at every possible moment.
That has got to be the easiest starting radial I have ever seen.

Very similar. I suspect the engine used in Sikorski would have been a competitor to those made by Continental in that time period..

It was just originally put together for enthusiasts and the website which is why it's a bit longer. For some reason it's reach got a lot wider.

So let me guess this engine would sit vertical in the tank? Why were the tanks' engines air-cooled?
Many were, but liquid cooled engines required openings for the radiator to vent heat, and could easily be shot up and damaged. Rendering the tank immobile and useless. Plus, they often retrofitted into tanks just about any mass produced engine of sufficient horsepower for use in them
Additional to what Tim says all the additional water cooling apparatus needed would have increased the weight somewhat. Nope, it's oil and fuel in the two containers.
What kind of planes were these motors used in? And what eras of service?
It was used in a tank.
Mainly single engined planes such as the Boeing-Stearman Model 75, but they where also adapted to use in vehicles such as the M2 light tank and Buffalo LVT in the 1930s and 1940s.
The poor engine needs to have some of those 10 or 12 inch chromed exhaust ends welded to the headers . The get some silly coal rollers to stick their heads in them as the engine fires up .

The Kamov Ka-26 does use a radial engine but not this one.

Yeah they can be a bitch to start if not primed right...updraft carb... and they catch on fire easily...I had a m3a1 Stuart with a 670 in it...always started hard..and I had a fire once...
Yep, thats why there's always a guy with a fire extinguisher on standby. :) When installed the Buffalo driver is literally sitting next ot it.

I know for a fact that the cylinders are interchangeable between ground and air. The tank cylinders as I was told had an "ear" cast in to the cylinder head which a shroud attached to it for cooling. I was wondering if that was what I was looking at.
