That caused him to destroy his guitar and his anger was palpable througout the show. At that time alcohol was not sold in the stadium, just soft drinks which sucked, especially because there was a huge stack of Budweiser cans in front of Sean's drums which everyone eyeballed. I'm not sure when but at some point a girl behind me asked to stand in front of me because she was getting squashed and was having trouble breathing. I let her infront of me and used my arms to push off against the barricade to create a little bubble for her. During Dam that River at the 40:00 mark, Layne jumped off stage for a crowd surf but somehow got hit in the nuts which angered him even further. He proceeded to pick up a can of Bud, took a sip then pelted it into the audience. I remember it as if it was yesterday: I could see the can coming towards me with lightning speed, too fast to react. Before I was able to put my hands in front of my face to shield it, the can had hit the girl standing in front of me in the forehead. The can bounced of her head and as she collapsed I managed to grab the can stuffing it in my jacket. I helped the security get the girl over the barricade and resumed my position in front. I reached in my pocket to find the can half full still. I drank half and gave the other half to my brother who was with me. Me, him and the band were the only other ones with our hands on a drink that evening. Suffices to say, had the girl not tapped me on the shoulder, my evening would have taken a different turn. Totally agree on that. Besides the fact that I (we) didn't know him, thus he was a public figure to some, to me, he was god. Neither an angel nor a devil but he could fly... even when his wings were cut off he always gave it all. His persona was all in one, Layne Staley, musician, artist, good, bad, right, wrong: human, VERY HUMAN, with human mistakes. Just Layne.

This literally has me in tears. I have never seen Layne as fragile as in this performance - this includes Unplugged and his last show at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City in 1996. Even though the performance isn’t really one of their ‘top notch’ nights... this setlist is w/out any doubt my favorite one overall of any/all AIC shows! My God, if only dear Layne would’ve had it together that night would it have been 1 friggin’ legendary kickass show from the boys of Alice! I mean, that damn selected list of songs was just phenomenal! What The Hell..., A Little Bitter, Rotten Apple, Nutshell to begin with...?! Good friggin’ night, would’ve loved to seen em play this selection of songs live in person!
@@DT24K totally! So cool to see them play Rotten Apple with Layne..wish they still performed What The Hell Have I. One of my favorite songs of theirs with Layne.
@@DT24K Just think, if they had had it together more, this show could've been a live double cd. It would've taken some planning, though. Coulda shoulda woulda, sighhhhhhhhhh.
It looks like hallucinogens. But damn this is amazing. He was letting go fully. He wasn’t holding back. He wasn’t holding onto the mic stand for dear life. It was an out of this world performance
@24:30 looks like he had a captivating flashback that almost took him down. I'm guessing he had a good time the night before, didn't sleep, and kept upping all day. I'm not a fan of public displays of the extreme neurotic behaviors associated with hardcore drug abuse, but for that song, I couldn't imagine a more perfect depiction of the mental state required to inspire and create a song like that.(Well, short of actually acting out the lyrics but no one wants to see that). Also, I've never seen a live performance of What the Hell Have I before, and that was great!
Samantha Gamez he still kicked ass. He was so off the hook with heroin and crack. Rotterdam and Amsterdam are the places in Europe to party your ass off. Layne has already relapsed for he wasn’t clean at all, he had dealers on lollapalooza bring him heroin, while he was supposed to be clean and taking methadone. He stayed off crack and was drinking using methadone and taking heroin on top of it. Methadone is good for recovery for some but it wasn’t for him. He wasn’t ready. And this was around the time Layne and Demri were broken up, and Layne was probably broken inside. Poor Layne, and I feel bad for the band mates. But I’ve been in his shoes. All I can say is I’m on suboxone now and doing better than ever as suboxone doesn’t get you high if you are opioid tolerant, just takes away the cravings. It’s very potent though and is risky for anyone who’s opioid naive and wouldn’t suggest recreational use for it could cause an overdose and then the naloxone will kick in and it wouldn’t be pretty. I wouldn’t wish addiction on my worst enemy, Layne was crying for help, anyone in active addiction is because they’re alone, on a dark and lonely journey that’s a slow suicide. They don’t want help when they can get off easily but by the time you want off, you need help and have lost the will and the drive and everything that goes along with that to get off. It’s a slow suicide, a true suicide. And withdrawal is ugly, and painful, and if you saw anyone go through it, you’d see why addicts keep using, it’s no longer getting high for that feels normal to them, like medication does after you become used to its side effects. Even if everyone can see it’s affects on you, you can’t feel it nor notice it. It’s normal. It’s sad. RIP Layne RIP Mike.
“WoOoooO!” 59:31 - Layne’s clearly feeling goood 1:00:31 - this comes back to bite him, accidentally jumping ahead in the song and having to correct on the fly I wonder if Jerry lectured him after this performance. Whatever he was on, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen Layne this wasted during a concert. He still sounded great as usual, but man he was all over the place in more than one sense during this one.
He was on crack the way it seems considering he was already smoking crack by 1992, since shooting heroin and coke together is a scary hallucination type experience according to Scott Weiland. I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s on smack and crack, speedball. He acts like he is, everyone knew he’d be drinking when he was on methadone during Lollapalooza 1993. He’d still technically been using, he wasn’t sober. You can’t drink like that and be clean. It’s not shocking he went back to heroin. Sad the Metallica guys made fun of him when Alice cancelled their tour with them due to Layne’s crippling illness. “Slow suicide’s no way to go..” it’s no way to live, wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy... RIP
Layne was giving some Scott Weiland vibes there dancing and shit, stoned as fuck, he was also smoking in his vocal body support moments, that ain't pleasant to watch for obvious reasons, this ain't no Zoo, this man was in struggle.
Oh my God!!! I've totally been where he's at and to be in public?! Well done, Layne Staley! I really love this concert, and wish I could have been there.
Mandy Beach most have in this day in age. I was heavily addicted to brown smack, Xanax, and ice. Been in public when i was high and tried to keep a low profile because of my mom usually being the one who would drive me to Walmart or a restaurant, and it wasn’t easy to hide. Lost a lot of friends due to my demons. No way to live. Wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy... such a slow suicide but we have no control, and it’s either going on the best you can till the bitter ends; jails, institutions or death. Or find a new way to live through the help of a positive sober support system, and whatever your recovery is, whether opioid replacement therapy like I’m on, in patient short or long term, outpatient rehab, drug court, or 12 step meetings and finding a sponsor. And reading the negative addiction into something positive by giving back to others, especially in need of help, making amends, or becoming something positive such as a spokesman as a recovery advocate. Even music and art. So sad seeing people die due to this vicious disease. Layne always nailed his shows oblivious or sober. He was a one of a kind that we will probably never come across again... RIP Layne Thomas Staley and Michael Christopher Starr...
Everytime I watch this performance, it makes me feel so sad to see Layne in such a state. But as a recovering addict, I need the reminder sometimes of the reality. Layne was such a good person according to those closest to him. I wouldn’t wish addiction on my worst enemy, it is literal hell and torment and only you hold the key to unlock your prison, but it takes such a long time to acknowledge it, let alone do something about it. And unfortunately for Layne, the band kept pulling him out of rehab way too soon to go back on tour or to record more music. And they were all so young so they didn’t realize what they were doing. They were all just as sick as him. Addiction does not discriminate.

Hey, who saw Layne dive into the crowd on Dam that River? I get the strong feeling Jerry was not happy with Layne during this performance, and while I kind of understand, I really do feel for Layne. It's funny how people get mad at the sad one when they were all drunk and f'd up. Though I do recognize that Layne was more over the top this time than usual.
Pretty good sound quality, that's kinda rare. Wish they did close ups especially of layne in rare form. He was such an unusual/unique singer. Came so easy. And to have seen close ups of him doing the high, stressful lyrics would've been awesome
I'm thinking whatever camera that was was probably already zoomed all the way in. I don't know what kind of camcorder from 1993 had that good of a mic and such low camera shake, but it might still be worth a buy.
Only people who tried Trips/LSD/Acid can feel things from Layne‘s perspective, high as hell! Like from another world 🌈🌠🪐 love you more than words can say, Layne! Forever in our hearts 🫶🏼
Another Du'fus'' I See What U did there.... Ur "thinking Can Not saveeee U yet'' Cas... here comesssss 'Ur' dumb ass thinking U cud be THE "Rooster" ?? Ommmm.... No.
Wow.. he is a mess here. I mean they sound good here but he's gotta be coked up. As I'm sure they all were but now I see why they say by 93 Layne was a mess.
I love Layne and AiC but as the mother & ex wife of addicts I know how trying they can be on those around them. My point is I can imagine the other guys are frustrated when he's messing up the songs and acting this way live in front of an audience that paid good money to see them. Hate the disease not the addict but it's very hard to deal with.
That’s rock n roll. But very well put! I live with addicts in my family and it affects me as I had done heroin meth and Xanax together, speedball for a while and no one heard my silent cries for help, it’s a dark and lonely road, a slow suicide that you lose the will and the power to do anything about on your own. It’s a chronic, progressive and fatal disease I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. I’m on suboxone right now and doing good in recovery, have a felony expunged off my record, got my band back up and running and a girlfriend I’m marrying this summer, with a 3 year old step son I see as my own. I wouldn’t trade this life for that lifestyle of active addiction for nothing. Being with my girlfriend and her son is the best drug ever.
Layne was absolutely comedic in this video!!! He was hilarious- grabbing at invisible things, laying down, thoroughly enjoying it. I wonder, though, how Jerry felt about it. I agree though, it had to be hallucinogens or something. Could be a combo of stuff and of course, throw in a little heroin! I’m sure he was feeling NO pain! And STILL he manages to sing! A little off at times but considering what he may have been on, he still gave a great performance! Damn that guy could still sing, being so incredibly fucked up!!!!!!
Lucy Mana it’s so sad to see him in that state, it’s sad seeing anyone in that state. They lose control by that point. And addiction highjacks the brain. I see the disappointment. But every band member had they’re own habits and demons they were fighting.
I yet have to buy the book but was Jerry free of any have addictions? I mean, it must’ve been a crazy time for all of them. But it must be hard seeing your best friend sliding down like that, I agree with you
Ryan O Jerry was heavy into alcohol and cocaine mostly. And so was Sean. Mike Inez loved beer. Layne was drinking Jack, shooting oxys, heroin and sinking crack during the first leg of the Dirt tour until Lollapalooza. Mike Starr pretty much looked up to Layne, but liked Girl’s in their late teens, early 20s. He was using mostly ecstasy, alcohol, coke, eventually crack, heroin, and Xanax. And later in life Xanax and Methadone as prescribed and Dilaudid to help with physical ailments that methadone doesn’t really help much with, despite its analgesic effects, after being on it for so long, like any other opioid you gain a tolerance and eventually no longer can feel the effects wanted and/or needed. But he was using dilaudid off the streets, and that’s how he overdosed and died due to A Mixture of Xanax(alprazolam), Methadone, and Dilaudid (hydromorphone). Methadone has a unique effect that causes you to have less tolerance to opioids, while oddly enough it’s a potent synthetic opioid itself. But to answer your question, all the band members had their own addictions, Layne was no worse than the rest, but because he was the frontman, the spotlight was more on him than the other members and making him out to be out of control “unlike the other members” when they were just as out of control. RIP Layne, RIP Mike. LSMS..
I agree but we wouldn't have a lot of great AIC songs (most on Dirt, "Tripod", JOF albums). It's just too bad Layne didn't find the strenght to beat his own personal chemical demons (like for example John Frusciante did).
Mr. Arms... Yep. It's diffenitly "Coke" people. & YEP Ur right again. He 'walks" his way throu it thank goodness Cas as a niece Of Stevie N. I know when it's coke or Alco or few others & YEP Jerry looks As Concerned As 1 can be while a MAJOR "Professionals Shows" Is Going On RIGHT Under ur feet.... But glad he prevailed & glad ur "unseeing" Eyes played dumb or..... Or are U just a dumb de'fuss.... ask 4 forgiveness And ALL WILL BE RIGHT IN THE WORLD... YES 5 YRS LATER....
He was already smoking Crack by 92, makes sense that he kept walking away from the view of the audience at some points to get more hits. And he got worse through out the show. I always wondered, it makes perfect sense now. Though, that's rock n roll for ya. Layne's voice being horse when talking in between songs explains a lot, his voice was horse from his mouth being too dry. drugs are bad, but your mind as an addict is worse than the drug, for the mind is the enemy and is convinced it needs the drugs to survive, and in extreme cases, you can legit die without them, with benzos and alcohol, and long-term opioid, and namely heroin, methadone, and other full opioid longterm use and abuse, detox can cause a brain hemorrhage causing one to die in detox, like after many years, not months, but years, of your body being fully dependent on such drugs, especially in large quantities of use. RIP Layne. Layne's vocals, the songs, his quotes, etc, have saved me from relapse. I've been on suboxone for close to a year now, but without it, I'd still be using. And I always remind myself of Layne's situation he went through, Poor Layne. I empathize, wish he didn't stay on that train. But addiction is lifelong, and it's either to keep using till you reach jails, institutions, and death, or find a new way to live and fill the void with something positive. For addicts, as he said in "God Smack", "Can't get high, or you will die / Or you'll die/ What in God's name have you done?/ Stick your arm for some real fun/ So your sickness weighs a ton/And God's name is smack for some", which by saying that, even though you don't realize how bad off you are, your drug of choice replaces whatever your ideal "God" is., because you have to have it to function after so long. If it runs in the family, don't chance trying drugs, I'm talking to every single one of you, it's not worth the risk, trouble, nor chaos that comes along with it. RIP Layne, Gone but never Forgotten for you legacy lives on.
LMAO He’s rolling face and loving every minute of it! You need to watch to the very end, literally everyone leaves the stage and Laynes still on it throwing out beers and bottles of water to everyone. You can tell he’s on E because he’s overly empathetic but it’s cute as hell. RIP Layne

To anyone saying how "fucked up" layne is here, he just got super stoned because weed was legal in rotterdam. He was a majority of the time clean in '93. Until the end of the year.
Hell no. Normal weed cant do this to you, not even sativa strains. Only heavily laced weed can do this. I smoked that crap considering how common it is in my country. One girl near my town died from smoking it so before someone tells me its just weed with high thc levels its not. It fucks up your brain and heart a lot. I stopped smoking 5 months ago and my heart results are awful as well as my blood pressure. The high is also horrific. Dont reccomend it. The way me and my friends acted on that stuff was like we just came out of a mental asylum.

As soon as I seen God smack and laynes condition I knew it was gonna be wild lol
@@DT24K Just think, if they had had it together more, this show could've been a live double cd. It would've taken some planning, though. Coulda shoulda woulda, sighhhhhhhhhh.
Thank you for the breakdown Dexter. 😊
if you can be high and play the show like this, I'll worship you.....
I think a young Serj Tankian was in the audience taking notes
It looks like hallucinogens. But damn this is amazing. He was letting go fully. He wasn’t holding back. He wasn’t holding onto the mic stand for dear life. It was an out of this world performance
Wow! This is the FIRST time I’ve seen him let loose like this!,!
###OFFICIAL-Looks/feels/sounds like severe pain/tortured==TORMENTED!-The only thing missing is the actual crucifix#
Also, I've never seen a live performance of What the Hell Have I before, and that was great!
christ almighty this isnt just a rock performance, this is interpretive art
Layne was so high he wasn't even on this planet LOL still a great show
Samantha Gamez he still kicked ass.
No it wasn't. It was ok at best. The had to make the hall 1/3 smaller, it started way too late and they seemed uninspired.
If he has his fingerless gloves on, he was high. Cant tell if he has em on here, due to color
Oh I see. He has em on. So yea probably stonned pretty good
At least Layne was lively. Not just standing going through the motions
“WoOoooO!” 59:31 - Layne’s clearly feeling goood
1:00:31 - this comes back to bite him, accidentally jumping ahead in the song and having to correct on the fly
I wonder if Jerry lectured him after this performance. Whatever he was on, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen Layne this wasted during a concert. He still sounded great as usual, but man he was all over the place in more than one sense during this one.
Those WoOooos are my favorite. Specially when he sings them during rotten apple. ❤
"Alright, guys. We gotta go to Japan. So we'll see you guys next summer, right?"
SUCH A FUCKING SHAME :(
Every time when Jerry have his solos, Layne live him in front. That's so great
I’ve watched many AIC concerts online. This is the most erratic I can remember seeing Layne.
HAH at 35:30 Layne thinks they’re starting junkhead...
He must be in that sort of mood here...certainly looks like it
RIP man
Feel so bad for him...
manifestgtr haha goddamn bro! I saw your comment, and had to see how it sounded.
RIP
@Enzo James, yet Layne’s voice still pierces through your Soul!
lol
Layne was giving some Scott Weiland vibes there dancing and shit, stoned as fuck, he was also smoking in his vocal body support moments, that ain't pleasant to watch for obvious reasons, this ain't no Zoo, this man was in struggle.
Yeah it is really fucking sad. Was thinking the exact same thing.
Still kick ass vocals, and movement too.
That friggin voice. Haunting and soothing. Miss you Bro.
Wild... but not unhinged. Soulfully satisfying to hear the songs differently like this!
That fucking net is so badass, the way Layne just tangles himself in it.
Probs one of the best Alice gigs I have watched, love the Setlist!
Propease.... U Fuxxing dufess'... !!! Yeah it's been a while but I Am Still gonna commit. U make NO Commit NO OBVIOUS mention Mr. Dufess' of Laynes being Coked out of his mind !!! @@bellabell5655 dude shut the fuck up you're annoying as shit. Its obvious. Everyone in this world has struggles. Doesnt mean its bad to share your opinion on the performance. You're making issues out of nothing and beating a dead bush. Just stop bringing him up. No one can do anything about the fact he was coked out in this video. Except react to it. You're being petty.
Yea, love how they included Rotten apple and What the hell have I
Great set list and show! Trouble with his shirt🤣🤣🤣
He did pretty good for being so high 💗
Hey, who saw Layne dive into the crowd on Dam that River? I get the strong feeling Jerry was not happy with Layne during this performance, and while I kind of understand, I really do feel for Layne. It's funny how people get mad at the sad one when they were all drunk and f'd up. Though I do recognize that Layne was more over the top this time than usual.
i was there!! thanks for uploading this video!
Great, great, great what a talented man it's rare in life to see individuals find and do what they are talented at
Thank you Melissa!

31:00 is a glimpse at serious grungy vocals.
So close and so far away.. miss Layne so damn much 😢

Yeeeeah here come the 90’s… Ah yeah!!!
Thank you for this rare footage, Melissa❤️❤️❤️
Wow.. he is a mess here. I mean they sound good here but he's gotta be coked up. As I'm sure they all were but now I see why they say by 93 Layne was a mess.
Laura Malizia He was really out of control. A mess.
Naflatem 72 I know.. all you have to see is Jerry's face.. after the guitar thing like what is he gonna do next? Is gonna be okay?
I agree. F, get your shit together they must have been thinking. it’s too hard to be around an addict. Intolerable actually.
I actually love this performance
Andrew Lemmings proud of you and I wish you health and happiness...
he broke his favorite guitar 😞
I think that it was an accident...
It's sad to see Layne's condition in this.
I've always preferred "What The Hell Have I?" to "A Little Bitter".
It's the other way round now.
@@gasmaskboi19371945 lol
Same here
Both great songs.
@@gasmaskboi19371945 nah. You were right the first time.
Ecstasy prolly
layne is out of his fucking mind on this one
During What the Hell Have I, you can see Jerry looking at Layne while he trips out - he looks so disappointed
LSMS..
Smoking crack* not sinking
Andrew Lemmings thank you for your detailed reply
he's not stoned man, he's coked out of his mind. Still he manages to make an awesome show. Wish Layne had stayed away from all that shit.
For addicts, as he said in "God Smack", "Can't get high, or you will die
/ Or you'll die/ What in God's name have you done?/ Stick your arm for some real fun/ So your sickness weighs a ton/And God's name is smack for some", which by saying that, even though you don't realize how bad off you are, your drug of choice replaces whatever your ideal "God" is., because you have to have it to function after so long. If it runs in the family, don't chance trying drugs, I'm talking to every single one of you, it's not worth the risk, trouble, nor chaos that comes along with it. RIP Layne, Gone but never Forgotten for you legacy lives on.
Andrew Lemmings hope that you are doing better and are staying safe...
Yep
LMAO He’s rolling face and loving every minute of it! You need to watch to the very end, literally everyone leaves the stage and Laynes still on it throwing out beers and bottles of water to everyone. You can tell he’s on E because he’s overly empathetic but it’s cute as hell. RIP Layne
That was scary to watch. I bet the rest of the band was worried about that performance. I feel sorry for them.
I’ve watched a lot of Lanes live performances on videos, and he had quite a different stage presence on this one

live in rio i think is the only one and its pretty decent
The Glasgow Scotland show 93 tour is the best audio, just no video to it...Oakland has video and decent sound
Live at the Moore, Live at the Marquee (no video), Oakland 1992, Hollywood 1991 and 1992, Bumbershoot 1991, the Singles movie premiere. All those are pretty good. , most of the shows were filmed from the audience with crappy cameras

@dash3640 err the first song is nutshell...
There’s no pictures
When layne said he was stoned, was this because of heroin? He looks more happy than usual. This show seems like it had to be a little bit faster
I’ve never used any hard drugs and I never will, but by the looks of it, my guess is speed?
he supposedly did some acid that day and I'm sure a few other substances peppered in there.
He definitely looked up and happy, so i wouldnt doubt the acid part. But that deff aint meth, course we all diff with how we act with substances so.
