"Kyrie Eleison" is Greek for "Lord, have mercy." It is used as a prayer in both Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox services. Greek was the original language of the New Testament and it was later translated in to Latin. Properly pronounced with three syllables (KEE-ree-yay.)

When Mr. Mister hit number one, they asked the guitarist what he thought about it. He said (and I'm paraphrasing here; it's been a few decades) "When we hit the top 100, I called my mom, all excited. When we hit the top 10, I called my friends, all excited. When we hit number 1, I called all the girls that turned me down and hung up on them."

This song means so much to me. I added it to my iPod just before my senior trip to Europe, and found myself singing it on the motor coach as we were driving along the French Mediterranean coast. When my classmates heard me singing it, they insisted I plug my iPod into the bus’s PA system, and when I did, the whole bus sang along to the song. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky that day, the sea was sapphire blue, and we did not have a care in the world as we travelled in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. This is one of my favourite memories of high school, and this song never fails to bring a smile to my face, sometimes with happy tears as I remember the greatest trip I have ever taken. Thank you Rob Squad for reacting to this song, and I’m glad you love it as much as I do! 😊

Always had a soft spot for Mr. Mister, as they were formed in my hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. Sadly, they only lasted eight years as a band (1982-90), and only two of their albums got any traction with listeners. Both "Kyrie" and "Broken Wings" hit #1 in 1985. After that, they hit the Top 10 with "Is It Love" (definitely should be your next one), and then had another hit with "Something Real". To this day, Richard Page's vocals still give me goosebumps. Also - as you heard in the song, the title is pronounce "KIH-ree-ay"... NOT like Mr. Irving. :) Also also - When are you gonna do some more Richard Marx? "Endless Summer Nights" and "Angelia" are both great songs. I'll also remind you, Jay, that you've only done "ya boy" Corey Hart twice, and it's been a while. "Everything in My Heart" is a great song of his.

Guys...sorry to tell you, the song is pronounced "Kir-e-a." The full phrase of the song that Richard Page sings is "kyrie eleison," Latin for "Lord, have mercy," and as told here, it's used as part of a prayer in the Catholic Church (and since my dad was a Catholic Deacon, I KNOW what I'm talking about). This song has religious elements and lyrics (which Richard Page and company used quite often) backed by a rock-pop beat that is just freakin' infectious. I'm glad you guys have discovered Mr. Mister, probably one of the BEST underrated rock/pop bands of the 80's. Richard (the bassist), Steve George (the keyboardist), Steve Ferris (lead guitarist), and Pat Mastellotto (drummer, who later joined the Rembrandts ("I'll Be There For You" from Friends)) only lasted til the end of the decade, but they were very critically acclaimed. Get your ears and find "Welcome To The Real World," the LP/CD from where "Kyrie" comes from, I promise you won't be disappointed. And I've already let Richard and Pat know online all too much, I have come to adopt "Kyrie" as my "theme song" thru life, giving me strength thru the craziness that sometimes pops up.

As part of the Greek formula Kyrie eleison (“Lord, have mercy”), the word is used as a preliminary petition before a formal prayer and as a congregational response in the liturgies of many Christian churches.

This might interest you. The " holy bible" is, fictitious, plagiarized, and stolen. Pure brain washing by ROME. As they set out to take over and rule the world. It just amazes me how many people they've captured by associations of fear and guilt, when the actual real history of it all is out there for anyone to research. The mere fact that the world plunged into the dark ages when everyone rebelled against the tyranny and the slaughter of hundreds of thousands by Constantine the evil when he institutionalized this false religion, under penalty of death, should be a wake up call for anyone.

The title of the song is pronounced "KEE-ree-yay", the phrase is "Kyrie eleison", which translates in Greek to "Lord, bave mercy" and is pronounced "KEE-ree-yay ee-LAY-ee-sohn". It's the congregation's response during a tradition Christian prayer in church as the priest recites various things that need to be prayed for that week.
The song itself is a prayer, the chorus literally meaning
Lord have mercy down the road that I must travel
Lord have mercy through the darkness of the night
Lord have mercy where I'm going will you follow?
Lord have mercy on a highway in the Light
I love the song for it's energy, it is an anthem to me for it's message. Glad you liked it! - Fun Fact: I've heard more than once people slipping in a mondegreen of "Carrying a laser..." ;-)

I didn't know until 20+ years after this song came out what the title was/meant. I thought he was singing "Carry a laser". "Kyrie" alone is pronounced "KEE-ree-ay"; the phrase "Kyrie eleison" is "KEE-ree-ay-LAY-son". As others have commented, this is a beautiful prayer. That a capella ending gives me goosebumps. Oh goodness, such nostalgia with this song! Those of us who grew up with this music didn't quite realize how good of an era we were witnessing firsthand. Well, okay, we knew it, but I don't think we realized it wouldn't last forever. And it didn't. This fave from Mr. Mister exemplifies that feeling.
