Nice video! Once I spent the time learning hydrogen I turned my focus on it generally, adding batteries and such a bit to cover things and help cover jumps and it’s spectacular! The 3 systems for thrust do everything well and I’m so glad they gave us the variety they did.
Just wanted to thank you for this video, spent the last 3 hours trying to figure out why my engines arent getting hydrogen, it was bugged and the only thing that fixed it was disassembling it and reassembling it so thank you for that
I would also like to suggest a sneaky little exploit if you dock a ship/rover to a station with connectors they share power and inventory meaning you can have small rovers with self sustaining Hydrogen Generators being filled with ice suppling tons of power
You dont need a pre-existing power generating source. You can jump start the whole system by building a battery. (i recommend bases have batteries anyway, it prevents massive drains when charging vehicles.)
Great video. Very informative... demonstrates there really in no viability to use hydrogen engines for nothing other than small craft (rover) and emergency power generation, and that's even contentious.

I've landed on my first round of SE - and set up wind turbines etc to start but now I am tunneling into a mountain to make a base within - I am primarily mining ice - in 1 hr 1million .... I've set up 5 hydrogen engines 1 large hydrogen tank and 1 o2/hydro processor - they run fine - no stop start no issues - 5mw per engine - but its the only way I know of at this stage for burning thru the 1million ice .... any other suggestions?
damn i really need a sound mod for those engines. with a much deeper dirtier and heavier sound that might even ramp up with engine useage. damn that would be so awesome if they sounded badass
My hydrogen engine still says 0 output no matter what I do. I have a generator going straight into the engine and the engine tank is full. What do I do?
biggest issue with hydrogen engine is you cant stockpile engine fuel without running the engine... and in builds ive done so far it means without a tank you will burn thru your ice almost as fast as the engine burns thru its stockpile.. you literally need to shut off everything else except 1 outside power source and the O2 gen and the hydro engine... also at least for small block builds the hydro engine is only good for short boosts or emergency battery charging... and still uses a ton of ice in that short time.... in short its better to have external tanks to fill hydro engine buffer.. at least untill balance is added or mod made to balance... also of note.. solars have been nerfed.. have yet to try wind on vehicles... and lack of uranium has effectively nerfed the real power gens.. not that that matters as they were burning thru uranium like a kid eating candy... either way we need a stockpile option on hydro engine without needing to run the engine... another note.. increasing cargo space to 10x makes it bearable as you can store enough ice to feed the engine for more than 5 min.. but still eats ice like a kid eats candy....
I can agree on the stock pile option I said as much when I gave my feedback on the hydro engine during the testing. My observations now are that it at least can provide full out put on a single O2/H2 generator since launch. Previously it couldn't give more then 1/2 power with one O2/H2 generator, now it is almost a viable way to recharge batteries. I would just as easily build a temp battery and discharge it before grinding it down since the resources where more plentiful and seemed easier to cultivate since you get everything back except some power cells even some of the iron is returned now it depends. If the ice is available I would use it. Though as it stands on a planet with atmosphere the wind turbine is pretty much king for power output it just needs to be secured to the ground either by being built there or by using a landing gear and your good to go. I can get about 1.5 MW with a single wind tower without trouble. That's with one on top and one a block down and out at each of the four directions. I am sure more could be built if the tower was high enough.
hydrogen engines are really only for emergency back up on planets with atmosphere imo. Wind and solar with batteries is superior. In space where wind doesn't work hydrogen becomes more useful.
100% agree, my wind keeps my base going fine. but if i want to charge the trucks or flyers FAST ill turn on the hydrogen they charge in 5minutes.... on WIND they take an hour.... depends what im doing.
Does anyone know how to vent stored hydrogen on a grid on massive tank out to a ship. I cant seem to get this tank to decrease no matter what i do and i want it to do just that thank you
its a decent output for early game but if you don't have the means to collect a LOT of ice very quickly, its kinda pointless. and those would need to be constantly filled with ice. you would need to use two o2/h2 generators to keep it running at full capacity which gives 5Mw, which is around the same as i think 12 solar panels at 100% efficiency. so technically you could use it for recharging ship batteries or whatever, like you said, but the amount of hydrogen it needs to run is just too expensive. but I would suggest it needs a huge buff to be useful. either increase the amount of power it gives by a lot, OR reduce the amount of hydrogen it needs to run at full capacity.
Have you tried putting one of those engines in a small vessel. I would like to see how well it does in something like a small mining ship. That way, you could simply go and mine some ice if your getting low, and if you had maybe two, or three batteries on the ship, the engine could charge these quite quickly, and keep you going for a lot longer than if you were just using batteries alone. I think some experimentation is in order.
Yes. The small engine doesn't produce enough energy on its own to power 1 Atmospheric thruster. And even with a battery you will be getting the same results as the large grid version. Lots of ICE to keep it going. Anytime these engines are using their Max Power output they just burn through Ice way to fast. Unlike the Rover example which will last years? I complained about this in the Play test to Keen and they did not seem to want to do anything about it... Lets not even touch on the whole breaking the law of thermodynamics these things do... :)

Yes, because your rover will be powered by the base, while your rover is off. And as long as you have Hydrogen on your base, it will fill the tank if it has room. Or if your rover is the only source of hydrogen conversion than your base should continue to power it, while your Engine on the rover is turned off.
