  • Welcome to The Duchess of Kingston Build!!! This series is on our Patreon site and has 14 episodes so far. The model isn't complete yet, but is more than halfway. I am actively working on it right now. All "new" episodes will post to Patreon. Then they will appear in order on TH-cam, one episode a week.
This kit is by Vanguard Models, and I believe they are one of the best manufacturers in the world right now. They cost more than your "average" kit, but with the ease of assembly and great features, I think they are worth saving up for.

The 'Lucky Coin' tradition is still carried out today. A ship without one was deemed doomed from the start. There is a video on TH-cam where the future CO of USS Nimitz CVN-68 (?) is seen placing the 'Lucky Coin' On a spot where the inner port main bulkhead of the 'island' will be set and you can actualy see the laying of the 'island' right over the Lucky Charm. Love your videos. Please do keep up the excellent work! Best regards.

What a cool looking wooden ship kit!
Nice to see your wife taking a part in the build process.

I think we still put a coin under the mast, I'm not sure it had to be a gold coin, though. Nice touch, it's things like that that make a model so joyful to build!

From what I have read. The United States in the shipyard the dock workers place one or two newly minted coins on the keel blocks of the ship during construction and retrieves the coin(s) after the ship has been launched. Sometimes the coins are welded to the keel of the ship when the keel is first laid. The New CVN-80 Enterprise has some of the steel form the CVN-65 Enterprise included in its construction.

Cutting wood products with a laser will almost always result in a slight "undercut" out of square to the part. Even with high powered industrial lasers it is very difficult to get a perfect cut.
So, squaring up the edges with sandpaper or a file should probably be considered standard practice when building such kits. Thanks for sharing this build process with us all.

Really well explained and demonstrated first step in the construction…….really enjoyed it and found it really informative.
Looking forward to the commencement of the planking as this is one area I find challenging in terms of dealing with the run and flow of each plank.
    Best Regards

I love this. You've made me want to give model wood shipbuilding a go. Probably a 'novice' level one to start. But those Vanguard Models kits look fantastic!

Loved the older wooden kits as well. Still have some in the stash. . . But then kits like these are released and. . . .

My friend works on the rigging of the USS Constitution and he has seen the gold coins when they remove the masts of the ship.

I always dry fit frame and main deck to get the hull shape then make a jig and with watered phases set frame then deck and fair hull hull I find it the best way to get the hull true, thanks for sharing mate

So you're simultaneously going to work on the Smith, Enterprise, and Duchess of Kingston - that's a lot on any modeler's plate.

It’s important to bevel the frames prior to installing them. At 18:48 you can see what appears to be mis-alignment with the keel, had the frames been beveled, everything would align. I understand not wanting to over-bevel frames, but this angle can be picked off the plan drawing in advance.

No, I don’t think you understand. At 18:48 I’m demonstrating that by fitting the frames this way, you can figure out exactly how much of a bevel needs to be put on each frame and where. This information is not on the plans as it changes throughout the frames length. There is no misalignment either. In the next video the frames will be beveled and you will see how it works out perfectly.

Trust me, you should be bevelling the frames in advance, I have built this model.

@rozinant1237 well trust me it turned out perfectly. You’ll see how in the upcoming episodes.
