    Notice how at the start of the scene Patrick looks disgustingly at Kimball pouring salt on his food, and then reluctantly follows suit by pouring salt on his own food. Believes in health but always trying to fit in hahaha.

      He actually wants to be caught... he says at one point he will avoid the punishment he seeks... and confesses on multiple occasions.. the whole movie is about him needing to fit in but at the same time stand out.. getting caught as a serial killer is the ultimate way for him to stand out... I think he likely embellishes the crimes in his own head... he does kill some peoples like the escorts and the homeless, but I believe he never really killed Paul Allen..he just thinks he did... and the shootout with the cops is a hallucination too.. thats my theory anyhow

    • @TheGoodChap
      @TheGoodChap 6 ปีที่แล้ว +276

      That's a very naive opinion though, you should know the first rule all detectives live by, which is of the utmost importance in training interrogators and results in an enormous number of convictions is "A good cop will never let you know he knows you're full of it." It's really basic stuff in police psychology and for an FBI detective? It's his entire job... They're masters of establishing a report with you in a friendly manner, tricking you into thinking you're not in any way the main suspect, they may even make up a lie about how someone they think you would want them to think is the real suspect being investigated to see how you react to that and the whole time you have no idea if the they're pretending to be needing your information for help when really you're their #1 suspicion and they keep going to you to establish that relationship then they can start throwing curveballs at you. One thing many guilty people will do is
      A) try to find out what the police know, attempting to casually prod them for information and
      B) actively feeding false information to the police in order to throw them off your trail if they've done a good job of making it seem like they really trust you. This is how many many people get caught. And investigators are *trained* to immediately pick up on this and encourage the behavior so they'll get you to spill as much as possible.
      You'll think that you were throwing the cops for a loop by outsmarting them and erasing yourself from the police's radar when really the cops were 2 steps ahead the whole time and pretending not to know so you would keep yapping. Every day you show up the police will act happy to see you, give you some food and coffee or whatever, and just kind of hang out and brainstorm the case, it will feel like you're actually a part of the investigator's "team" and a valuable member, and they'll keep reminding you that all the information you've given them is really helping them out a lot, and they've already taken all your advice, and been building the whole case around what you've said etc etc. So this guy thinks "Wow they're really eating this up! I can dictate the whole direction of the investigation!" only to find out, whoop, no I'm now being arrested for the murder of X and 167 counts of perjury, knowingly lying to an officer, etc etc.
      Patrick Bateman is just so insanely bad at lying and understanding other humans emotions and motivations that he takes whatever superficial body language is used at face value, so if someone lies to him but does it convincingly, he completely buys it exactly how he visualizes others will buy _his_ phony lies. He's internalized and accepted lying and wants people to believe him, but will easily believe other's lies as well because he just wants to just fit in and conform with everyone else.

He copies the detective to appear “normal” and just like him. That’s why he puts too much on. He’s not putting salt on to make it suit his taste, he’s just mimicking, and doing a poor job of it.

Except for maybe the police, but that the whole point of the novel was to make this character who wanted nothing but to stand out and make a point. Nothing. He was just like all the people he was around. Even Paul Allen didn’t know he was Pat Bateman. Pat Bateman got people confused all the time and his friends would even confuse pat with others. And he really wanted people to know he wasn’t a spineless guy- killed people. But no one could believe him bc they don’t even recognize who’s who in their societal group

    If Patrick wasn’t actually there with Marcus at that meetup and Marcus (or someone else) told the detective that Patrick was there, this would be another example of Patrick being mistaken for someone else (at the party)
    This would incite two things in Patrick. 1. he’s angry that he was again mistaken for someone else 2. He cannot correct it as it was a perfect alibi just thrown in his lap
    What a clash of emotion he must be experiencing. All while knowing (maybe not) that he was the killer and that the detective is entirely wrong

      He thinks that all the other businessmen were out without him and he realises he has no alibi - he looks down and appears sad because he basically accepts that he's caught out.
      Hence his surprised reaction when the Detective tells him that he "was there".

    • @Bvggerffpls
      @Bvggerffpls 6 ปีที่แล้ว +81

      If I remeber correctly (from the book), Bateman desperately wanted to be caught as a means of actually having a meaningful effect on people and proving that the world wasn't completely shallow and meaningless. That's why he keeps making half-hearted attempts to out himself as a psycho. His drive to fit in with society tempers this so he can never fully commit. Don't forget, Bateman is insane and the events in the story are purposefully designed to confuse us. I agree more with cmiller8492 and Josh JeanJacket Jaeger. Even the film suggests this. Why else would someone look so depressed upon realising they had an alibi and force themselves to fake a smile? lol. His face is one of defeat, not tension or relief

    • @Retsler54
      @Retsler54 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, Cloud, I think it is smart played like "as being exposed/defeated" but actually Batesman plays it like "I would look like this if defeated however I am just listening and having nothing to be afraid of/guilty of so I could just as good look like this"

      @shellshock10 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Fauxpikachu
      @Fauxpikachu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      He was already making that face before even being given an alibi, he's sweating way before that. It was established when he gives himself to his lawyer on the night of his rampage that he's prone to panics becaus he likes to be in control. He doesn't cry because of regret but because he couldn't remain with the hands on the wheel and go out on his terms. When something forces him out of the commands (usually when forces of the law are in play), he starts sweating and panicking, here he was about to lose to despair. He WANTS to be caught, yes, you're right. BUT he also wants to be caught on his own terms, hence why he runs away from the cops and also doesn't tell the detective anything but ends up telling his lawyer. Here he does hide everything from the detective and his defeated look is here to show that he has accepted he lost, the detective has everything on him but he will at least get what he wanted. His smile isn't forced, he's relieved that he's still scott free and will be able to give himself in for more impact. I find it quite sad people don't understand that part of him when the books clearly spill it out and that it was what the film directors were trying to portray.

    Bateman was at a loss when Kimball started naming people who were at Atlantic. He was like "It's done I was not there", yet Kimball said he was there. Now the movie had this theme of people mistaking Patric for other people so maybe they mistakenly said he was there. You can see the confusion and relief when Kimball says his name.

    If you watch this scene and interpret it as Kimball simply just NOT bothering to check his notes on who Marcus was with until right that EXACT moment, then this scene makes the MOST sense! And is somewhat funny as it adds up to Kimball just NOT caring about his job.
    It's like:
    Kimball: Yum this is some great steak (oh yeh I suppose I better ask this guy where he was) Yo did you figure where you were yet? *Gets distracted by Bateman's questions* Yeh yeh Marcus was clean. His alibi is good. Who was he with again... *checks notes* It was this guy, and that guy, and that guy, oh noway.. And you too. Shit I guess I didn't need to come out here today. Great streak. Yeh imagine if somebody just killed him randomly lol.

      I think it's different. I think it's pretty obvious that Kimball knows that Patrick did it, he just can't prove it so he trolls him. Also in the book Kimball was just there for one scene, in the office, which made a little bit more sense imo. And no, I don't think he is part of Bateman's imagination. I think the "murders didn't happen" theory is really weak and makes the story uninteresting and basically pointless.

    As much as I love Bateman's music monologue the best scenes are with Bateman & kimball. The way he says " isnt that right Patrick?" Indicates to me that kimball knows that he did it but he has an alibi & no physical evidence. He wanted Patrick to know that he knew. Such brilliant directing. I also love that the director had dafoe in the first meeting do the scene 3 ways that he thought Patrick did it, that he didnt think Patrick did it & that he was not sure & all 3 were spliced together. I was always under the impression that all the murders were in Patrick's head. I did see an interview where the director said he did do it. It really could go either way. What leads me to believe he did not do it is the shooting of the cop car & it explodes , the atm machine giving him messages the lawyer saying he saw paul allen & that paul Allen's apt of dead bodies & blood were simply gone.
    Then again this movie is a satire on how depraved selfish & unconnected people are. Everyone mistakes everyone else bc they all look similar dress similar & are all vice presidents of the company or whatever. Theirs a lot of mistaken identity like the guys saying Bateman was with them when paul Allen was killed. Or that the lawyer says he had dinner with paul but he mixes Patrick up with another guy. Also the real estate agent was more concerned with selling a very expensive apt than reporting that their were dead bodies their & having it all cleaned up. Her testing bateman about the apt showing & telling him never to come back seems like she knows.
