Didn’t see it but I would definitely recommend reading 11/22/63. It is long but the characters and premise are great and I loved the story. Ending was a little meh, but overall it is one of my favorites.

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I really did not like Salem’s Lot very much. I though it was far fetched and forced and I just found Ben Mears to be very unlikeable which is unusual for a King book because he normally writes awesome characters

I understand why King pulled Rage. But I dislike why Rage is rated based on geographical accidents. I read Rage in 1992, here in Ireland, and loved it.. The tension, and honesty, and the theatrical setting, was incredible.
I reread it about 10 years ago, and loved it even more so then.
The issues elsewhere regarding the themes should be addressed outside of imaginary scenarios in books.

Found Rose Madder terrifying myself. It’s a really believable abusive partner scenario and there’s only a tiny step between that and pure psychopath. The villains vindictive rage in chasing her down was so believable it terrified me so much I couldn’t keep reading and skipped to see the end (when I was nearly finished it). Will have to read it cover to cover one day.

You lost me when you put Wizard & Glass in Hot Garbage. Most DT fans will say this is one of the strongest in the series. Elevation is a fantastic story, but gets shat upon due to its short length and cost at time of release. Totally agree on The Dead Zone. I tell people to go there first if they've never read King before.

    • @ZacksBooks
      @ZacksBooks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As I said before, I am going to be rereading the dark tower series, going into it with a better King knowledge. I shot myself in the foot with reading the series too early, I believe, in my King journey and was someone who didn’t appreciate the writing, and just wanted the action. I feel going into the reread, Wizard and Glass will be out of hot garbage once it’s over. Elevation is another I feel needs to be readdressed for me, the length just wasn’t good enough I thought and it seemed to leave me with more questions than answers.
Dead zone, perfect book to me. It was great.

I'm sorry the one major disagreement I have is the stand God tier absolute god tier totally and absolutely in every way shape or form God tier. You mentioned the library policemen I honestly wonder whether or not that might be something generational because as a person who spent a great deal of time in libraries when I was younger I'm in my 50s that story scared the piss out of me and always was kind of a reality type tail but now that people don't really go to the libraries in the same way Maybe it's generational.

For such a famous author, it's kind of insane how many of his stories are tolerable or hot garbage. King is definitely talented, but here are a few flaws I've noticed with his work.
    1. He's overly verbose. While I'm a fan of King's work obviously, he has a major issue with rambling on. Like my God, I'm reading The Dark Half right now, and he spent probably 5-7 pages at least saying there was a hole in the graveyard, it looked like someone was buried alive, pawed their way out, and walked away angrily.
I read Joyland, which is apparently one of his better works. It's not even that long by his standards, about 250 pages. Holy hell, of those 250 pages, maybe 50 are relevant to the central story.
He spends more time describing the entire process, in detail, of acting as the theme parks dog mascot dancing for kids, trying to win over this kid's mom, and how to operate the park's rides than he does about the mystery surrounding the park.
    2. Pacing issues, ties into point #1. He tends to either reveal things too early, or too late, usually too early. This sucks all the mystery out of the story. You know what's happening, you know why.
Coming back to The Dark Half, it would have been so much better if you didn't know who was committing the murders for a while. A crazed fan upset that he stopped writing as George Stark, so he's trying to act like George, and frame him for the murders. Or as he's dealing with a lot of stress, you see him snapping, making you wonder if it's him.
He basically gets to the meat of the tale too quickly or slowly.
    3. Great concepts, questionable execution. This one is pretty self explanatory.

He is character and situation driven rather than story driven. If you want a complete story then read Agatha christie or Tolkien. King focuses on characters and wierd.. Or ordinary situations. His short stories are amazing. Have you seen mercedes? Please watch this. It's acted amazingly and is so true to the source material. It will show you what king is about. And you may change your mind about his books. They are not horror. Look at the shaw shank redemption, the green mile, joyland... BTW... Amazing return to his earlier self!!
