    My current top 10
    1. The Stand
    2. It
    3. 11.22.63
    4. Needful Things
    5. Salem's Lot
    6. Under the Dome
    7. Drawing of the Three
    8. Misery
    9. Desperation
    10. The Green Mile
    Have to point out that despite reading my first King novel circa 1991, and having been a massive fan ever since, I've STILL not read the Shining or Pet Sematary. I will remedy that over the next couple of months, so this list could, and probably will change.

      If you read the Shining, try to read the Cemetery Dance edition with the bonus content. It includes the prologue, Before the Play that makes a big difference in understanding the long bloody history of the Overlook.
      Pet Sematary is horrific and heartbreaking and one of King's most focused books.

    I can't possibly form a top 10 list, but I think nostalgia alone would force me to put Christine somewhere in there, as it was my first King read. I was 14 in 1983, and while I had already read a few horror / suspense books, I certainly hadn't experienced anything close to that. I was hooked.

    • @sleestack13
      @sleestack13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also liked the Pet Sematary movie remake. They changed just enough to make it interesting for those of us that had read the book and seen the original movie multiple times. I thought the young actress that played Ellie was fantastic. And you can never go wrong with John Lithgow in any role he chooses.

    • @THEJEFFWORD

      @THEJEFFWORD  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, I'm not one of those guys who thinks there's only one correct opinion to have, who takes it personally when others have a different opinion. So I can accept that there are people who like the Pet Sematary remake. And hell, I'll even agree that you cannot hate John Lithgow in any role. I just HATED the way Louis Creed was played.

      Wow! I'm a little surprised to see The Eyes of the Dragon at the bottom. That's a usual fan favorite. But I can't really argue against the rest of the list. I myself should have put The Talisman in my top 10. LOVE that book! You should definitely read Misery and Black House.

    • @ERIC524892
      @ERIC524892 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, to be fair, if I were asked to rank these books on another day with no memory of having already done so, books 11 - 15 could probably be in any order. Mixed feelings about each of them.
      If I had to pick a book to criticize, it would be The Stand. I feel like the build up and character development were top notch. But for a book that's been described as the ultimate battle between good and evil, there was very little conflict between the opposing sides. If The Stand was split into two books, the split being when they arrived at Boulder, part one would be #1 or #2, whereas part two would be #16.
      Black House is on my list, as I'm reading anything that's related to the Dark Tower, and I will read Misery at some point after, thank you for the suggestions!
      I have some non-King recommendations if you're interested:
      -Ghost Story by Peter Straub
      -My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix
      -Bird Box by Josh Malerman
      -Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky
      -A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay

    What’s strange about doing a King top ten, as you say, is the rankings tend to change. Once all his books are read they are allowed to steep within our minds and hearts and most readers tend to rank very similar top fives. Then upon rereads we start to second guess ourselves because so many of his books are so good. Needful Things is a great book yet oft forgotten.

    • @THEJEFFWORD

      I agree! I also think it changes as you get older! The first time I read The Green Mile I was 14, it stuck with me but not nearly the same as it did when I was 26. King has this uncanny way of writing something that grows with you.

    Nice list and great video! I agree with 7/10. Tommyknockers is somehow the only book by King I haven’t read- bumping it up my “to read” list. I think you’re flat wrong about TWTTKH that high- I’m ok with 2 DT books in the top 10 but would have included W&G. Cell is the only other one that wouldn’t make my top 10. Bag of Bones or Insomnia probably find their way into my top 10. I’m not a boomer, but I might try to make space for 11/22/63- maybe just have one DT book.

    • @THEJEFFWORD

    • @THEJEFFWORD
      @THEJEFFWORD  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did eventually read 11/22/63 and I posted two reviews on this channel--one was a One Minute Book Review and the other went into more detail. Essentially, I thought the middle where Jake was living in Jodie Texas was bloated and unnecessary. The beginning and ending were perfect. But that middle dragged the book down for me. The love story felt like the hormone fueled love fantasy of a teenager who never had a girlfriend. It's a bit misogynic too. His girlfriend is valued because she's pretty and a virgin! How rare and collectible. He got to be the one to break the seal like she was preserved for him. I don't know. It just really repelled me. And since it got so much of the focus it made me not like the otherwise fantastic parts of the book. Though I know I'm in the minority on this one.

    I’m late. I can only hope for forgiveness. I haven’t read everything, but I am under ten to go.

    1. Wizard and Glass
    2. Revival
    3. The Stand
    4. 11/22/63
    5. The Shining
    6. Needful Things
    7. Under the Dome
    8. Duma Key
    9. The Colorado Kid
    10. Insomnia
    Everything I have yet to read is tied to a reread of one or more books. It’s going to take forever.
    I haven’t read Regulators, but I want to reread Desperation first, but I don’t want to reread that until I’ve read everything else. I haven’t read Wind Through the Keyhole, but I want to read that during a full reread of the Tower series.

    • @THEJEFFWORD
      @THEJEFFWORD  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You're right. You don't have to be a boomer or from the US to know it's not funny to make light of a presidential assassination. I guess for me, having not lived through it, it's as remote as a dusty history lesson and so I don't have an emotional connection. Doesn't make it right. I was mostly just shrugging off the rabid fandom of 11/22/63 as a way of justifying having never read the book up to that point. I don't seriously carry any disdain for boomers or fans of 11/22/63. It was just a crude throwaway comment that I'd take back if I could.

    I was 10 when Kennedy was shot. It was more shocking than 9/11 simply because of the timing and sense of general well being America had for quite awhile in spite of the Cuban missile crisis. When you mock that experience for us boomers you mock your own personal experiences that you are hard wired to bury deep inside for deep remembrance. Unsubscribed.

    • @THEJEFFWORD
      @THEJEFFWORD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn’t seriously mocking the boomer experience. Those were some tumultuous times and I think it’s stupid to put everyone in a generational box anyway. The people within a generation can live extremely different lives. I think all boxes serve no one. Sorry if you felt my mocking was serious or based on any real worldview.

      A nice mix of predictable entries and some real surprises. Nice to see the fancier editions on display as well.
      Personally, my favourite King book it still IT. Has been since I read it back in the 80s. The creation of a town history deeply corrupted by evil, and a perfect novel about childhood, just puts it at the top.

    • @THEJEFFWORD
      @THEJEFFWORD  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, IT sits at the top sometimes. I was surprised when Ire-read 'Salem's Lot a couple years ago to see the seeds of IT in that book--the town history and evil events. Also with The Shining by CD that included Before the play. Loved reading about the history of The Overlook.
