Would you be willing to read a short? Just for feedback. Not to endorse, promote. I'd even ask for a NDA. I don't have many people in my life that understand the passion of film making.

@@ZoeSFX hi, I can relate to your comment. I'm an actor but had the urge to start recording and now I'm basically making a movie by myself.. (in NYC, similar to a modern Taxi Driver) im acting, filming, funding, directing etc etc but I'm terrible at editing and the production side of it all. It's so hard to find help or sometimes the replies are overwhelming and some are bots etc. Where are you from?

As a newcomer to the world making a short story using a smartphone, in two minutes of listening I learned more than listening to 45 minutes on another video on the same topic. Thank you very much for giving me a sense of direction when I shot my first short film.

    • @Rocketryman
      @Rocketryman 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Sadly, he misused the word film. Your smartphone generates a DIGITAL VIDEO, not film. You do not film, you video. Film, filming, and filmmaking are the most misused words in the industry. 🙂 Digital Video and film require different skill sets. Having DIFFERENT historical and TECHNOLOGICAL timelines spanning 150 years. Have PRIDE and KNOWLEDGE of the gear we use including the words that describe what we do. Our tools are Digital Video, Non-linear, and CGI. We are moviemakers, not filmmakers and we do what film wishes it could. We are Videographers and/or cinematographers. 🙂 We video or are videoing, we do not film. That's the other RARE professionals who know how to use film and film cameras, like an ARRIFLEX 435 Panavision R-200 and Steenbeck flatbed film editors. Know the difference and have a better understanding of the craft. You will also stand out in an industry polluted with point-and-shoot "pros". Respect to you.✌♥

I love how you get right to the point. No flashy costumes or girls in bikinis (although I wouldn't have objected to that)) no sales gimmicks or "Here's how to get my t-shirt or mug with discount password" just straight to the point info on how to successfully pull off your 1st short film.
I did want to add the best thing is not to rush on the project and feel like you've done your job. Organizing is the best point.
I'm not like most and not a perfectionist, but I've been on year 3 of my first film which is actually a music video documentary so I've had to create a stage and buy many props, lighting, instruments and amps and cameras and, well you get the drift.. Of course the best part is my actors are puppets so I don't have to feed them.. I figure year 4 is the year. Wish me luck on my project date of 2023 or is that 2024?
    Thanks for sharing...

7:39 "Be prepared to 'kill some darlings'." This is something a lot of filmmakers in Hollywood need to remember. Just love seeing these movies running 3-4 hours now when they could be 2 hours or less and not lose a single important part of the story.

I disagree once upon a time in america is actually a 4 hour movie but when you watch it you won't feel like its long movie i only realised its a 4 hour movie after finishing it it was directed by an criminally underrated director sergio leone and it was his last movie its all about the plot and how you make when the plot and thr making is not good even a 1 hour movie will be boring

I've been making films since 2006. My biggest obstacles were my ego and my unique sense of humor. Now the ego is much smaller and more justified and I've learned a lot. When someone tells me that he doesn't like my film, I like to ask what could have been better. I want to improve, but I won't know how to improve unless people tell me what didn't work because, if I knew how to make it work, I would have and there wouldn't be a problem.

I did a music video that was barely written, poorly planned, and had last minute changes before I even started studying filmmaking. However, I have been able to watch it over again and realized what I liked, how bad the pacing is, and how uninteresting parts were. It sucks to make something crappy, but it sure gives you something to learn from!
Now, I’m planning on doing an album-length music video… I’m putting a lot more pre-planning into it, but it’ll be an interesting process. Trying to tie a story together with songs that weren’t written with visual pacing in mind will be a challenge.

Did all this last summer, everyone backed out last minute, made me sad because I've loved making home videos and such since i was around 8 years old and wanted to take on a acting career ever since, so i had thought I'd start off by making short films as "baby steps" until id go onto full length movies/tryna get casted for stuff if the day ever comes, I'm 18 now, once i start college next year im gonna go into acting class, meet people, etc, i hope the path leads me well.

I came up with my latest short film (yet to be made, still sick) by making oatmeal. I get a lot of ideas from normal, simple tasks and then ideas just keep flowing, and I'll spend about 2 hours writing them down, restructuring, and fleshing out.
this one is stylistically inspired by Wes Anderson and Million Dollar Extreme and is written in a way that makes it seem like it's a kind of generic "dealing with (OCD in this case)" short when it actually has nothing to do with that. it's gonna be really fun to make.

Great job, LIKED & SUBSCRIBED! I am looking forward to seeing more of your work. I have shot a couple of shorts with the help of friends. I’ve gotten positive feedback. I produced, written and directed, but I didn’t have to actually touch the equipment. I just directed everyone on what I wanted and they followed directions very well. The challenge now is, my editor graduated college, got a real job and a girlfriend and has no more time for this stuff. I understand, but he was extremely talented. All the best to him. My other challenge is, my cameraman doesn’t want to participate (correction)… won’t let me use his camera unless he also acts. I understand, but if there isn’t a part for him, there isn’t a part. So, I bought a camera to proceed on my own and the editing, lighting and learning everything about the camera is overwhelming to me. I know I don’t need to know everything but even the bare minimum seems problematic. I know, JUST DO IT! Which, I am and I will definitely check out your videos to help me on this journey. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I searched "how to make a short film" and this video was at the top of the list. Your opening statements on choosing an audience sounds extremely helpful, already. The idea of producing a short film stems from my love of horror films with good stories, along with watching a lot of @BizarreBub. I wanted to do something similar in my own home / neighborhood. It just sounds like a fun project! Thanks for sharing.

I always say: Victory offers affirmation; Defeat offers education. Learning from your mistakes is how you grow and get better. Don't fear mistakes.
Look at your first film as a learning experience. You're learning the art. Nobody grabs a paintbrush for the first time and creates a masterpiece. Embrace the process, and it will serve you well... :)

Making my 9th film. Been making short films with my parents and grandparents since I was 9/10 years old. They have improved ALOT over the years. All of them have been horrors. Except the last two films I made. The reason I tell you this is because I made my first film and it was like 48 mins long. Wasn’t horrific oh bad. But now I make films like 3-5 mins long. I have actual equipment now, I have premier pro/after effects. Anyways. For the last two years me and my friend have been on and off making a slasher movie with a twist. We are on our final draft/script now and will be making it this year. It should be around 20 mins long, with a budget of approximately £150. Currently 16 years old and I want to be a film director. So far this has been a way of life for me. Writing story’s is something I have been doing since I was 6. So I’m looking forward to making this film (finally). Also comment on the comment if you think I should upload it once it’s complete :)
