- MYFOXNY.COM - Opening night at Lincoln Center's American Songbook series will feature a special performance by Lea Salonga. The Tony winner and voice behind several Disney animated characters sang for GDNY on Monday.
This is creepy after being immersed in Les Mis, the musical, movie and book. IF Eponine had not jumped in front of the bullet meant for Marius, it really would be her singing this, not him. Hearing the first "Eponine" I knew singing about the situation is very moving. And my "alternate reality" nerdiness clicks in. This is just beautiful. I can't get too much of Les Mis or Lea.
GAHHH !!! I WAS THINKING THE SAME WHILE LISTENING!!! like.. dang, this really could have been eponine singing this to an empty room, marius and the others all gone
I love this!! I hadn’t even thought of it like that! ❤
This would be so depressing! Now this makes me think of Eponine and Cosette meeting each other while mourning for Marius and perhaps they’ll start getting along and will bond over their shared grief.
Lea's pronunciation of words is so clear, so refine. You can understand every letter, every word she utters. I can consider her accent as one of th best.
I absolutely agree with you...her enunciation of the words makes a song's clear definition vivid...
Only Disney? Oh these guys are clueless. Aside from Les Mis and Miss Saigon, let's not forget her roles in Grease, Cats, The King and I, The Fantasticks, Flower Drum Song, Fiddler on the Roof, Annie, Cinderella and many, many, many more.
Too many to mention achievements. 🤭😉
Jhanssen Tan yes and many more
I believed that all singers in the philippines...thier songs are holy and sacred...with a thousanths melodious rythm and amazing vibrations of frequency...that's why pilipino singers are excellent performer at all times.

Watch her in a starring role in Redwood Curtain movie. She acted realy well in that.
I know there's no Perfect singer but in my opinion Ms. Lea Salonga is the closest you can get to Perfection. She is the best singer the Philippines has ever produced.
Empty chairs and empty tables where my father sing no more....
and the WORLD
This lady really sings
beautiful, Eddy Redmayne sings it to perfection.
You stop that.
Your voice is too perfect for human ears.
No, don't stop!!!
Kim, Eponine, Fantine, Princess Jasmine, Mulan. Damn this woman has a lot of identities! Next thing you know she's Batman!
Lol not batman but she' captain marvel hahaha
Hhahah! 😂
Marius is next!
can she just do the entire show please?
Beautiful performance! She nails every song she sings! On a random note, I need an instrumental in this key!
Besides having an incredibly GREAT voice, I can not think of anyone who places the emotion of the song into her performances better than Lea Salonga.
Most likely, because that voice of hers is just unquestionably, undeniably beautiful.
It's interesting to me, because I feel like Lea's version has a lot more actual mourning in it than many of the male singers who do this song. Many of the singers who do it in Les Mis have really muscular deliveries. When they do the bit with "from the table in the corner, I could see a world reborn, and they rose with voices ringing..." you get the idea that they're trying to revive those voices. Just remember Ramin's "Oh my friends, my friends, don't ASK me", where he sings as though he's arguing with himself and with real other people, compared to Lea's gentler version of the same line, where she sings as if she's letting go of people that perhaps she never really belonged to in the first place. I don't think either interpretation is wrong or right, but hearing her sing this song made me think much harder about the actual place of the song in the musical, and about the delivery of other singers that I'd loved before her.
lastofthelapras you by far have the most intelligent and educated opinion and comment here. thank you for your keen and more nuanced observations.
+lastofthelapras Yes, Lea's rendition is more haunting and "with more actual mourning." But i also like the version in the movie of Les Mis. Great performance.
+Ricardo Ramos I agree so much!!! I loved his acting there. I mean, Michael Crawford, Hadley Fraser, Ramin etc -- all exceptional singers. But Eddie Redmayne's expressions/breathlessness/tears/diction were all so, so spot-on and I really felt his loss. The way he sung the last "oh my friends, my friends don't ask me" still haunts me to this day!!!
Oh yes! Redmayne's performance is amazing!
This song is really quite difficult to interpret because it has to have competing emotions. When Lea sang On My Own, there were so many emotions because she was so conflicted and confused even. This song should be sung kinda in the same way.
It was the most subtly beautiful performance... most musicals singers can "belt" a song, and do the cheap trick of going for the "money" notes, it takes real class to take it down a peg or two and really "control" the voice and the emotion, for me, much more powerful, but each to their own.
I love her sense of humor plus her being smart. She's truly bless with that crystal-clear voice. I'll be forever thankful and proud to be her fan!
There's a grief that can't be spoken
There's a pain goes on and on
Empty chairs at empty tables
Now my friends are dead and gone
Here they talked of revolution
Here it was they lit the flame
Here they sang about tomorrow
And tomorrow never came
From the table in the corner
They could see a world reborn
And they rose with voices ringing
And I can hear them now
The very words that they had sung
Became their last communion
On this lonely barricade at dawn
Oh my friends, my friends forgive me
That I live and you are gone
There's a grief that can't be spoken
There's a pain goes on and on
Phantom faces at the windows
Phantom shadows on the floor
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more
Oh my friends, my friends, don't ask me
What your sacrifice was for
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will sing no more
I would listen to her sing a restaurant menu.
I would pay to listen to her singing my doctor's prescription.
@@Dace18 , I use to say the telephone list, because it may be the most boring thing ever (name, number, name, number name number, etc, for 2000 pages).
I used to say that about Ella, Piaf, Streisand, Amalia Rodrigues, and now, of course, Lea.
okay so she carried the melody in this new key so perfectly. wow.
You'll never experience a dead air if it's Lea Salonnga who's being interviewed.
Brava Lea !! An honor for all Marius's to hear you sing this song with such beauty and charisma!
Full marks to the pianist, too.. great accompaniment.
Lea's diction is so good that I can understand every word that she sings in the song.it's hard to find a singer like this.
more than her singing, I always amaze by how she answered to all of her interviews, very smart and articulate.
The most beautiful voice I have ever heard is still a young Lea Salonga.
Watching this on July 08, 2019. The wonders of TH-cam.
Still watching july 17 2019.. hehe...
21 July 2019
I'm sorry but I actually prefer Lea doing Marius's songs then Eddie who actually plays him, actually the show would be a lot better if she sang every role😂
hahahah i think i agree with you....her voice ...everytime she sings it gives me goosebumps
☺☺☺
No one did the emotions better than him
I ASPIRE TO BE ATLEAST 1/16 OF HOW AMAZING OF A SINGER SHE IS
Most of the time, I have a problem with girls singing guys songs from musicals or even guys singing girls songs. But, she proved me wrong. I love this
Her voice is actually the most beautiful and perfect thing I've ever heard
flawless rendition...as always. she can sing all day and i won't mind.
Simply stunning, diction, expression, technique, breath control, and so moving, just so incredible. She is incredible.
Goosebumps Empty Chairs
This is one of the most heart wrenching scenes in Les Mis. T_T. She is awesome.
She will always be the best singer for me.. I love you Ms. Lea Salonga! Im so proud of you.. Keep it up! I love your voice!! God bless you.
Can Lea play Evita? It has been a while since she played Kim in Miss Saigon. It's high time we see her again in a grand musicale. I think playing Evita suits her.
Watch her singing Don't Cry for me Argentina.
yup she should
that will be her 2nd oscar
@@edwardallenmiranda8586 you mean Olivier? Or Tony, perhaps?
Thats her big dream to play EVITA
WOW! She in impeccable, I especially love her performance as Eponine...
saw her in concert back in January :) this was the highlight of the concert for me when she sang this! Empty Chairs and Empty tables is my fave les mis song! :) well along with On mY own and I dreamed a dream
I'm crying because I'm so proud of her.. 💖💖💖😊😊.
She is amazing.
In my opinion, the best Eponine and Fantine
Yes, now she's done those two when is she going to do Cossete...
+A Betta Future well she could not, she is too old for cosette now
True, but she would still be awesome in that role
If you've been corrected by Lea, you won't be embarrassed for she handle it so well professionally and with humor as well.
This is one of the - if not THE BEST piano arrangement and interpretation I've heard of this song! Stunning!
Mark The pianist loves Lea's voice😍
Pianist loves Lea's voice! sorry haters!😃🎤🌌🌃🌌🌃🌃🌌🌃🌌🌃🌌🌃🌌🌌🌌🌃
I like lea salonga's voice, an angelic voice
i fell the sadness of the song. I'm in tears while listening. Very clear diction and pronunciation.
This is my dream girl, right here. Leah, I just want to say, thanks so much for keep bringing honor to the Philippines. I've been a fan of yours since I was young.
It's funny that this is on 'American Songbook', as it's written by two French nationals for an originally British musical, which was adapted from a French novel.
SaintHaHaLOLZ, and now just sang by a Filipina. A truly international song!
amazing. wow. i wish i could sing like that....
contestants on the voice phil. are so lucky to be mentored by lea.
That is just so beautiful. You are so good, Lea!!!!

very nice song i love it...
Can she just please sing all the songs in a musical? That would be heaven for me.😍😍😍
Goodness gracious, best On My Own, best Little Fall of Rain, and now to me personally, the best rendition of Empty Chairs. What is wrong with this woman!?!?!?
On the 25th aniversary she's Fantine, don't forget.
She's just so amazing that's it.
Amazing voice and brings you goosebumps just listening to it so much to come out of
the Philippines.
PERFECT!!!!!!! omg Lea, where did you get that perfect voice. so touching and epic performance!
The beauty, the talent and smart Lea Salonga
galing galing naman ni lea...i love her voice so much..
can somebody teach me how to not press the replay button over and over again? please? :D
She is amazing as always.... but what a beautifull piano arrangement... brings another soul to the music... Loved it!!
she's so witty
Wow! I got chills from the moment lea opened her mouth to sing! One thing I need to mention, the Philippines has seen revolution after revolution, and has been in combat for over 500 years, against threats both foreign and domestic. Also, the book noli me tangere, written by the Filipino writer Dr Jose P Rizal was partly inspired by the book les miserables, and is responsible for sparking the revolution against the Spaniards in 1898. I guess Filipinos really feel the meaning of this song deeply
Pitch perfect. Every single time. Mow that's talent.
Aahhh amazingly clear crisps with emotions.....
Cant wait for her at The Voice Philippines
LEA SALONGA IS AMAZING. I LOVE HER SOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH
quelle voix magnifique !!! bravo
this is one of the most devastating songs in Les Mis. I cried when I saw it in the movie.
Her voice goes straight to your heart! She is a gift from God! Bravissimo!
I can listen to this song non stop
Nop, she said, "Thanks for pronouncing my name correctly." So dare not mispronounce her name."
Lea has long been one of my favorite singers... and this only adds to the reasons why. Keep in mind she is singing on a news show with no mixing of her voice or music like so many other performers need to sound good. Heavenly!
Magical, earie, entrancing and just whoa! Somehow a full alternate story unfolded in the time of this song. Les Mis would have been so different if Epi was the one to live
Okay, right so it’s confirmed, Les Mis can make ANY happy situation into a scene of depression, death, and sadness 💕
I'll forever adore her.
i wanna cry!! her emotion is overflowing my God!
Im leahs fan of course... and I myself is a singer!!!!!... for me... this song is very perfect...flawless...full of emotions.... haunting!!!... she did it beautifully!!!... her singing prowess is beyond copy from another singer... i can sing and i know exactly for certain that she did it beautifully... if ur not a singer... u dont know what ur talking about...
It's amazing how she sings this better than a gut
Perfect song as always from Lea Salonga! Wow...great perfomance!
best version 💖💖💖
les miserables the best musical of all times 😢😢😢😢
No matter how big you are, it's always great to be modest coz God is the gift giver, we should give glory to Him, the one who is Mighty and big!!!!! and He thought us to be humble. And those who humble themselves, He exalts!!!!!!!!
This performance is all class. Sublime!
Piano sounds amazing!
so beautiful
Lea was young in the 10th anniversary concert as the street urchin came back for the 25 anniversary as Fatine.
love the bit of diva attitude lea gives at the beginning before she sings >.< just co'z I don't like fox
SHE IS THE QUEEN OF EPONINE THE QUEEN OF BROADWAY
All I Can Say Is That "I LOVE YOU SO MUCH MISS LEA SALONGA". 💖💖💖😊😊.
I really love Lea S. Uncomparable
This song was sung by Marius and she did well. I'd pay for her to sing all the songs from the play, especially One Day More accompanied only by a chorus. I'd even buy the DVD if they tape the performance.
Hahahahaha, Lea Salonga in one sentence with Sarah Geronimo?! Excuse us !! XDD Lea like you said IS INCOMPARABLE
Brain and talent.
Oh look at 0:01 even Aladdin loves Lea's voice! :)
It was a very haunting melody indeed!
I am proud of you Lea!
Here in Norway, i'm kind of bizi promoting you my own way to people.
Thanks for this upload!
Love and prayer
This is the song Marius sang in the movie right? OMG it still makes me tear up. I can feel every word. And Leah did a good rendition of the song.
It's actually Ley-ya. Trust me, she's one of the people we study in class here in the Philippines. :)
It has been a while since a performance of this song really moved me, but Lea sang it with such a tenderness and pained passion that I couldn't help but cry.
I am a JAPAYUKI, also a singer & entertainer like LEA SALONGA. Former Japayukis like me performed in night clubs in Japan. As ENTERTAINERS, we all know that whenever we perform WE ALWAYS GIVE OUR BEST & TRY SO HARD TO PLEASE & ENTERTAIN PEOPLE WITH OUR SINGING, ACTING & DANCING always hoping they will like our performances. But it's okay na rin coz we earned big "lapads" in Japan that really helped our families financially back home. I hope showbiz Lea Salonga (whom many people find her hypocritical) will have SINCERE concern & support to her fellow entertainers like us Japayuki singers to ask the government to BRING BACK AGAIN EMPLOYMENTS IN JAPAN for us ENTERTAINERS (SINGERS & DANCERS) coz we can earn big "lapads" in Japan that would really help improve the lives of our families...
I love her!
Very beautiful voice, but not powerful enough for the revolutionary contest. She is too fine, too distinguished for this song, which is too "masculine".
Lea's version is the best so far I heard from any female singers. Amazingly unique talent we have on Broadway!
i I think they have a concert in japan together with sierra boggess...
they even tweeted about it...
