15:18 I'm not agree with her....trans people here have better life here compared to other parts of india...plus LGBTQ community is strong here.....also some people hate this LGBTQ community as well..imo its common in all over the world....but majority of us dont care about it.....10 or 15 years ago they was treating poorly but now people treat them with respect....i also had a trance friend in my office..
What she said is mostly right in my understanding. Trans people have only started getting some recognition. In the 76 years of independence of India, Trans people got their legal recognition in 2014. In 2019 a Trans Bill is formed which protects some rights and takes away others, like surrogacy, adoption rights, inheritance, marriage rights are missing. Add to that govt schemes may exist on paper but in reality the implementation is poor, for eg- Garima Greh, a rehabilitative housing or shelter scheme was announced and allocated funds on paper , but now they are in disrepair because the funds are not disbursed, so homeless jobless trans people are borrowing money to stay in the govt shelters, you can look it up. So when the lady in the video says, if they have money, they are looked after is exactly right. In the Trans Welfare Act 2019, sexual violence against a trans woman (who are considered a high risk category) warrants a penalty of max 2 years and a fine whereas the same against a cis woman is much more longer and a non bailable offence. It’s like trans people have a say, but have an invisible boundary drawn by society that says dont ask too much or we will take away whatever little rights you have. So even in Kerala, central government rules will define the quality of life. So basically things are better than they were decades ago, but marginally and at snail’s pace. Though, it’s changing and that’s good.
