Books about books can be tremendously interesting, from cover designs, publication history, discovering titles not known before. I like the Encyclopedia series books (science fiction, fantasy, and so on) that have short articles on books, authors, short stories, themes, etc. The books on individual publishers are always interesting. This one looks great, and I enjoyed your video.

We have Penguin Modern Classics down here at the bottom of the world, in Australia and New Zealand. 🥳

I just purchased the regular old Penguin Classics book. Now I'm very tempted to go for the Modern Classics. I love books about books...

Happiness as the moral purpose of life. Productive achievement a noble activity. Respect for individual rights. Objective reality.
How can anybody be against that?

I learn so much from your videos; I didn't know about the UK having Penguin Modern Classics that weren't regularly available here in the US. It's so fascinating how companies and their marketing divisions treat different populations in different ways. British people already get better covers for a lot of novels, but who knew they were getting exclusives? And the audacity for them to publish this book to throw it in our faces! LOL.

I loved Penguin Modern Classics. I used to have The Hustler in Modern Classic. My favourite was Sherwood King’s If I Die Before I Wake. The cover was a still of Rita Hayworth from Lady From Shanghai. I’m not sure I would have read the novel had it not been a Modern Classic, but it is a great crime novel.

Inclined to agree with you about Ayn Rand. I read her book "Philosophy: Who Needs It" and was extremely underwhelmed ... I couldn't remember the name of her philosophy either, while I was listening to you, but it's just come to me: Objectivism!

I just got this book also the other day. It’s so well done. I’ve already found so many books I’ve never heard of that I want to read. Did you see that Morrissey was included? When I saw it I thought of you. Lol!!! 🤣

Two classics ... oops, mentioned classics again. Truly love those two books. I assume you have the brilliant "Penguin by Design: A Cover Story 1935-2005" as well as the Puffin version and that is a classic also ??? It is an amazing catalog of their books but it is done with so much style, you can ignore that. I used to get a lot of catalogs back in the 70s and they were lists and lists of the penguins (pan, nel etc) and they had the covers, sadly, I never kept any of them but they were often just piled up in the book shops with little interest, certainly they were always of interest to me. Now I will have to go and look on ebay and see if any still are available .. though probably hard to search for (probably the sort of thing that turns up at book fairs for £20 or so now or more)

Interesting. Thank you! I was just taking a break from reading a Penguin 20th Century Classic, i. e., the aqua color spines. I'm reading a Bernard Malamud book from my tbr. I love a lot of the cover art Penguin uses, but all their crazy versions drive me nuts.

Its now more confusing as Random House, Penguin, and Vintage are together and so I have Faulkner books and Hemmingway books in Vintage classics as well as some Hemmingway books published by Arrow. I have a thomas Lygotti book published by Penguin Classics and H P Lovecraft in Penguin Modern classics.

@@michaelk.vaughan8617 One could argue this doesn't count as a book, because it's a reference book and not something you're likely to read cover to cover. But it's interesting that one of the few books you decide to splurge on after you failed the challenge - which you plan to restart - is a book that tells you about all the wonderful books you don't own! 😋
So the question is, does this work as a proxy? Like, maybe you can't *buy* these modern classics, but at least you can own a facsimile of the cover? Or, does browsing it make you itch all the more?! 😈
