Interesting. A couple of my favorite Modern classics that rocked my world were To Kill a Mockingbird, The Grapes of Wrath, Babbitt, The Hobbit, Fahrenheit 451, How Green Was My Valley, Desert Solitaire, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

Ooh she got an absolute bargain with those books didn’t she. I have always wanted to read One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. I have a feeling Nurse Ratchett could be an icon. I thought a modern classic was a book that was over 30 years sold and under 100 years old… maybe that’s wrong, well one is over that so I am. Ha. I’m expecting a ‘My Ten Modern Classics video’ coming soon.

I'm here for alllll the penguins, very partial to a Penguin modern classic haul. I've got a big book that's a history of the Penguin Modern Classics and I'm not sure I have many in your haul, I have a copy of Triffids (really have to read it) and reread The Jungle Book (that is a weird inclusion as is Room with a view). I must look them up in my Big Book. I think the films linking them is a strong possibility but weird, hey! All the covers are from the films, I think.
Clive James, he's a blast from the past the old rogue, one of our Aus expats. I have a couple of his poetry collections.
A very interesting haul! Cheers Louise

I've been thinking about picking up some vintage penguin modern classics and ended up back here. Apparently, Penguin Modern Classics was a series that started in 1963 and included books from 100 years previous. What was considered a Modern Classic in 1963 has changed a bit, lol, but still being republished in these Series. I'm kind of fascinated with them.

What a deal, Louise! At $15 for all, I'm thinking that was 10% or perhaps less of the actual cost. Wow!

IMHO Lolita is perhaps one of the finest examples of how deftly and brilliantly the English language can be used. Nabokov, for whom English was his 3rd or 4th language, was an absolute master craftsman in his ability to create such a novel.
I’m not sure I would have classified Ian Fleming’s Bond in among the modern classics, but I may be wrong.
I would rather have seen “The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit” by Sloan Wilson included.

They made it into a film with Gregory Peck. It was from the late 50’s early 60’s period when everyone was enamored with existentialism and middle class angst. Wilson also wrote “A Summer Place” also made into a film, but the book was better.
When you mentioned Virginia Woolf, I realized it’s decades since I read A Room of One’s Own (last semester college). Mrs. Dalloway is my favorite as well. The NY Tines noted a sudden revival of Woolf back in the 80’s and parodied it by announcing the Virginia Woolf Book of the Month club.

I bought this same collection in 2008/9 from one of those catalogues that used to come around offices if that helps you date these. I’m not sure Ian Fleming would be in there now after the me too movement. Whoever donated those has had them hanging around unwrapped for years! So fun to see them all, I’ve always thought the connection was movies as well but I can tell you it didn’t come with a description.

What a great haul, Louise! Thanks for sharing it with us🌷That poetry selection by Clive James looks very tempting. I’m currently reading A Happy Poem to End Every Day, doing exactly what the title says and loving it!😊 There is a beautiful film adaptation of Orlando starring Tilda Swinton, who also narrates the Audible version. I love A Room of One’s Own read by her as well (it feels like being part of Virginia Woolf’s audience at Cambridge). Looking forward to your top 10 modern classics! Mine would probably be A Room of One’s Own, Mrs Dalloway, Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco, The Garden of the Finzi-Continis by Giorgio Bassani, History: A Novel by Elsa Morante, Memoirs of Hadrian by Marguerite Yourcenar, The Makioka Sisters by Junichiro Tanizaki, The Leopard by G. Tomasi di Lampedusa, The Discovery of Heaven by Harry Mulisch (if 1992 is not too late for a modern classic…).

What an awesome Book Haul.. you got a Great Deal on those penguin classics..my list of modern classics is very slim.., I have watched a lot of movies based on modern classics … but if I had to do a list these three would top the list…”The Bell Jar” by Sylvia Plath “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker and “84 Charring Cross Road” by Helene Hanff.. ( that one makes me happy and by the end I’m totally 😢) thank you Louise for a relaxing video 🥰☺️ 15:52

As always, Louise, I love your musings.
I have only read two of these -- Breakfast at Tiffany's and Orlando. I loved them both. They would both qualify for modern classics if we look at publication dates of 1900-1970.
My suggestions for modern classics would start with The Prime of Miss Jean Brody by Muriel Spark. I would argue for We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson and The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. Interestingly, all three of these have been made into films.
With Ian Fleming, I have only read Casino Royale (and Chitty Chitty Bang Band some four or five decades ago). I enjoyed Casino Royale, but the James Bond novels are not at the top of my to-read-next list. I think it's worth reading one.

I loved the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's" . I haven't read it. Gorgeous covers. I have read other Kipling's and really enjoyed them but I wouldn't consider him modern? "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" is on my TBR. Nurse Ratchet is definitely a her. I liked "Passage to India" over "Room with a view". Goldfinger????? I have never heard of "A kestrel for a knave" . "Lolita"...I started and quit that a while back. Not sure I will go back to it. "Orlando" was interesting. Interesting group of books.

My list: 1. To Kill A Mockingbird 2. Lonesome Dove 3. The Thirty-nine Steps 4. Lost Horizon 5. What Makes Sammy Run 6. Rabbit Run 7. The Lonliness of the Long Distance Runner and stories 8. Cider House Rules 9. The Handmaid's Tale 10. Gorky Park et al. (I fell in love with the melancholic Arkady), if any don't make the cut then any Jack London. Okay just checked 3 of my choices were not published until the banner year of 1985, so throw in Judgment of Paris and other Gore Vidal. The Jungle Book definitely not a modern classic. I would say a modern classic should be 20th century at earliest. My list would include: Mrs Dalloway; The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie; Wide Sargasso Sea; 1984; Brave New World; Of Mice and Men. Rebecca. Animal Farm. The end of the affair by Graham Greene. Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively. If we were extending into the 70s and 80s I'd want some Drabble, Bainbridge and Lessing on there too. And the late Fay Weldon. A room with a view feels very Victorian but was 1908, though a society of chaperones etc doesn't feel "modern".
