I purchased a pen blank drilling press. I made sure the table was square both ways to the chuck and never had a problem. I have turned about 20 pens so far and have never taken my mandril out of the lathe. It is far quicker than constantly taking the mandril out putting a jaw chuck or a drill chuck in and out. For greater control I do recommend a pen assembly press. I have never tried a potato but I have heard waxed paper from the supermarket works. I have not tried it yet but I will. I use acrylic blanks because they are so strikingly beautiful. Pen making is a great hobby. Happy days.
I like your press pieces for assembly. I made mine out of some 3/8" HDPE with a rare earth magnet epoxied to one face. The magnet holds it on the headstock and tailstock spindles perfectly.
Just when I thought I knew everything about making pens I watched your video. I like the tip with the potato that fills the end of the tube. So many times I’ve had glue that gets in there, hard to remove. I also like the way you used the clamp and trimmer to trim the blanks. Then there was the lathe as a pen press. Wow, I’m going to use all of these new tips. Thanks.
I use a Zebra Z grip click pen parts as my pen kit since it writes better than a Slimline kit and costs less than $1 from Amazon. Have you tried this method?
Nice tips. So I’m still confused is it better to drill the barrel hole with the bit on the head stock or tail stock? It seems easier to have the bit on the tail stock
Marcenaria Arroz Doce la parte metálica depende del tipo de caneta. Las venden juntas. Busca “pen turning kit”, o “Sierra pen kit”, “baron pen kit” y vas a encontrar muchas. Saludos!
Good tips for beginning turners. Terrible work habits when you hammer on your lathe bed instead of a wooden block on your work bench. Lathe beds don't make good bench tops. : /
He tapped it lightly with a wood mallet to send the tube home. That little brass tube is going to damage several magnitudes earlier than the lathe, if he did it too hard.

Nice job Ernie. Using the lathe for assembly is a great idea.
Very, very didactic, speech clear, perfect to non native speaker, good content, congratulations

This is exactly the video I needed to see right now! Thank you!

Interesting ideas. I agree that there is often a lot of slop in the drilled hole
thanks

Good video with several tips that I plan to use.

Just the best tips👍👍👍
.010 clearance is not bad considering room for the glue
Good tips.
onde comprar essa parte metálica que fica dentro da caneta?

Good video
I beg to differ with your close limit tight fit brass tube to drilled wood, you have to have clearance for the glue,
Noticed the blank was way off centre drilling like this
