Okay guys, last summer I did a HUGE backyard makeover and a ton of you were asking me questions about how it will survive a Canadian winter.... honestly, a lot of it stayed in tact, but there were definitely parts that needed a little bit of ~shaping~. When I follow your link, the Details for your discount code says Valid in the US only.
Thredup is a terrible website. The search parameters do not work. I ask for a particular size and I get sizes 2 or 3 sizes up and down. If I'm not careful I end up ordering something that doesn't fit at all. I ask for a particular color and again, too many colors. I've given up on Thredup.
I can't restrain myself from making this comment. I would love to see TSG considering Native plants in garden design. Your devotion to the planet is a source of pride for you. Native plants will support butterflies, birds, bunnies and beneficial insects and thrive in your yard. The place looks great and I don't know which plants you chose might be native to your area, but some of the"weeds" you pulled out probably were beneficial. Just a thought for future outdoor work from someone who has discovered the world of native plants and their benefits to the planet.

Okay gal, I’m speaking as a certified floral designer with many years of landscaping and gardening experience. You are gonna want to water those evergreens all the way up until frost. This is the latest you can plant them, because it takes conifers a long time to establish enough roots to survive the winter. Water, water, water those babies until frost, OK?

Yes! Love the sorry girls designs and videos 😊. Yards have such different needs than interiors 😅. Wish they would bring in a horticultural specialist or landscape designer to help them see problem areas and know what will actually work! 😁

The best gardening advice I learned is “see a weed, pull a weed”. Anytime I go outside I try to pull out 1-5 weeds. It takes two seconds. It gives me something to do while my dogs pee. It really helps keep the weeds from taking over the world! And it doesn’t feel like hard work. 👍
Yes this! Every time I walk past my box garden at the front of my house I do a weed check. It makes it so manageable: unfortunately I don’t apply the same principles to my back garden and it’s a dreadful jungle.
i say, "see a weed, eat a weed" -- most of the plants we westerners deem to be ruining our gardens are actually free and potent plant medicine and food sources!

My mum never leaves our garden without pulling up a tonne of weeds, they are relentless!
I want to do this more often. I need to keep gloves and my weed puller on hand.
Use native plants suited to the lighting, soil type, and drainage. When you plant new plants, they will need deep watering for 3 weeks to establish good rooting systems. When I created a garden, it was suggested that I let the water run for an hour a day. Native plants need less water and care and they support native pollinators and help recreate native habitat. We have less that 11% native habitat left in Ontario! So it's up to us to create it on our properties. It's the reason bird populations have declined incredibly. So providing the native habitat will bring all the native animals. It also helps correct climate change. / Any plant with a fancy name is not native, it's cultivated and a hybrid.
Okay, I just gotta say this. Becky has always been absolutely stunning, but she has been RADIANT lately. Just absolutely glowing. Hair looks silky and banging, eyes are bright and happy, and her smile just seems so much warmer. She just looks like she’s feelin’ good! We love a happy and healthy queen

As someone who has worked at a garden center the past 3.5 years, when planting evergreens, I would suggest that you really should be digging the hole twice the size as the root ball. You should also be adding in soil admendments such as leaf compost and compost manure. This late in the summer I would recommend SOAKING the soil (not the foliage) at least once a day or even twice for a good few minutes per plant. Do this for the next few months and you should have much better luck. Best thing to do is to not neglect plants after initially transplanting them from their nursery pots. Best of luck!
You can save a ton of money and time by researching ahead of going to the nursery. Most costly mistakes I have made have been made by lack of research and planning. Gardening is hugely expensive. There is a massive environmental impact to growing plants for sale that we also tend to ignore.

Love this. You should do more "how the space works/looks now" since sometimes spaces are designed one way, but the functionality the space demands turns out to mean changes need to be made.

The Sorry Girls are pretty transparant about their builds and processes, but so many TV-shows (move that bus, anyone) use chewing gum and craft paper to achieve movie magic that isn't functional and doesn't last, simply to meet the deadline.
The whole point of DIY is being able to tailor it to your needs, so this return/update is great!
I would love to see you guys planting native, pollinator-friendly plants! Especially in a city, your yard is a great opportunity to create some habitat and food for native pollinators.
The plant that you said looked out of control at the beginning of the garden center segment with the spike balls at the ends is rattlesnake master. In Oklahoma it is a disappearing native plant that was important to the the indigenous people. I have 3 of them, my pride and joy.

SAME!! I love that sweet boy. We had a border collie and she was the best dog we've ever had. So gentle but so protective.
I dont know much about Canadian plants so don't have insight but I think in general sticking to natives is better. I live in Florida and only plant natives because I know they will survive our weather with limited work from me and there is less environmental impact to get to me in the first place. Gardening takes so much work and knowledge but if you can find a native nursery instead of normal garden centers it takes so much guess work and money loss out of the equation.

@@macocadena yes we have tons of native solitary bees and bumble bees and other beneficial insects and birds. Plus we don't have irrigation so we only water extra when first planting or in severe drought times, that combined with not needing to use pesticides and herbicides we don't worry about chemical runoff going into local water ways, which is a big problem down here. Honestly it's really low maintenance when you have natives.

I don't know, that's kind of sad. Plants are not design choices or decor that you change every year, they are living things, and a garden is definitely not something you take care of once a year, when you do a video update. I'm not a plant expert, but I have never killed a plant, if you know which plants to choose, they require minimal care to keep them alive.

You should dig the hole twice as wide as the rootball and deeper (and backfill in to make it level) so that the soil allows the new roots to spread easier and become established.

I always buy the smaller/smallest plant sizes as stores/nurseries. Often they've been stuck in the same nursery pot for long enough that as soon as you plant them, they have a growth-spurt! Otherwise, I'm patient and know they'll grow anyways!
My only exception is some succulents 'cause some are very slow growing.

I've heard that majesty palms are so affordable here (in Canada or North USA) because they really can't survive beyond two or so years in our climate, necessitating us to buy more to replace them. It's better to go with hardier plants that look a bit less tropical!
Palms are for indoor sun rooms or greenhouses.
They don't survive at all in the north, especially Canada haha they are only for indoor use or you buy them for the summer season and let them die. Which is the way most plants are marketed, the idea is to have a plant decoration that lasts a little longer than cut flowers, it dies eventually, you buy another one and the cycle continues.

i'm from brazil and i'm an interior and lighting designer currently studying landscaping architecture, and it's so cool too see how different (and expensive, jesus) are the plants in canada vs. here, especially because of the season thing (our winter here is definitely not so bad and our plants don't suffer that much) and etc. cool content, guys!
Trim off the yellow leaves at the bottom of you tomato plant. Get three sticks to make a pyramid tired together with twine at the top will look great in the patio.

New England here...that wicker furniture will have much more longevity if you bring it in your basement. They are lighter than your fire pit and which can take the weather much better.
when you're gonna plant flowers/plants, it is smart to look for information about them; if it needs to be in a sunny place, how much water it needs and when you should plant them (what month in the year). it can also be smart to look up on what soil they like to be plantet in too! just some easy tips ;)

Like everyone else - can’t believe it’s been a year. The backyard really is back! I love “going” to your nursery in Canada. The flowers are so beautiful. We do not have the same choices here in Texas. I can barely stand the overwhelming high heat index to go see our nursery. It’s a big deal keeping flowers through our hot as an oven summers.

Are the bigger shrubs/tree-thingies you planted Thuja? If so, you want to make sure that your pooch doesn’t eat any part of the plant. It’s toxic, especially the tips of the leaves.

What. I live in a tropical country and if we don't weed the garden every week (especially during rainy season) the weeds take over!lol less time taking out weeds would be amazing haha
Love the veggie pots as decor, I have a woman-high tomato on my balcony that is just beautiful!
If something else dies again, ask your local friends what thrives in their gardens and then go to a local growing nursery or farmers market. Flowers like Iris or day lily (edible and delish) could work nicely, because their rhizoms store water in the hot summer and on the dryer winter days and you might ask someone to give some to you, cause they divide very easily. Oh and you can also use your grass cuttings as mulch for the next time.
You're going to love the ornamental grasses - once they get taller and the wind blows - it is so soothing.
When watering your plants outside, especially the delicate ones, wait until there's complete shade in your garden. I know it's difficult in the summer but watering in the day will burn the leaves and petals. I'm sure you know this, but just in case!!

Just a friendly FYI, when planting you should dig the hole 2 times deeper and wider, place the tree and backfill. If you do it the tiktok way the roots will come up against hard ground and think it's still in the pot. It won't be able to spread out & become healthier and stronger. You should also amend that soil that you backfill. The quality of our back yard soil is usually pretty poor.
My dad has planted after dumping soil in our backyard. Acc. to him the existing soil won't support the plants since they were overused and have loss most of it's mineral and fertility.

2 tips, I have the boomerang lilac and regular, the lilac you saw at the Nursery will bloom all through the Summer but likes mostly sun, the regular lilac blooms once a year. Even better are Drawf Butterfly bush that flowers ALL Summer (flowers are similar to a lilac) they truly attract a ton of butterflies, watching them never gets old and they are Perennial
I learnt the hard way about those ornamental grasses, they re-seeded EVERYWHERE this year, luckily I have a small area

Looks great and I love your choices of your plants. For your Junipers, if you soak them a lot during the month of October, before it snows, it will flourish and be really beautiful in the spring/summer.
One way of avoiding having weeds take over your flower bed is to not leave bare spaces. Weeds are very opportunistic.
For a plant as root bound as the one that had the tags stuck in it, you need to cut an X through the bottom of the roots and follow the lines up the side (not too deep), to help the roots grow outwards instead of continuing in the spiral they've done in the pot. If they keep growing in the spiral, they'll die.

Love the three trees along the chain link fence. Hope you add them the whole length of the fence and you will have a great privacy screen. Names? Meeny, Miney, and Moe. Love the grasses too! Clever to use the rubber mallet to move the stones, but why not just lift them? Are they too heavy? Looks like a beautiful backyard space!

The proven winner plant tags open up like a book and have a ton of information. They are one of my favorite plant companies.
Water in the winter also if it’s dry! It’s easy to not think about over the winter but they can still dry out.
Love the 3 green arborvity. They provide privacy and cover that chain fence. I would add a few more and maybe on the other side so they can start settling in this fall. Just a thought , dog urine can burn plants. Gardening is do and learn. Have fun, looks great.
It looks like your circle pea gravel area is in shade. So if true, and you don't get at least 6 hours a day of sun, don't look at plants at the Nursery that are in bright sun all day. Shop in the section of the Nursery that is shaded, for the best plants to put in your shaded flower bed. You also need to consider your soil type, to decide if your plants need to be acid loving plants/shrubs; or alkaline loving. Most plants that do well in shade are acid loving plants. So fertilize them with Miracle Grow with Chelated Iron, to insure your leaves stay nice and green, and don't turn to yellowish leaves with green veins. If their leaves are turning yellowish with green veins, then mix up the Miracle Grown and spray the leaves and around the roots of the plant ASAP.
