- This is how you Refinish / Refurbish AMG Monoblock Aero 2 the correct way. Not a step-by-step tutorial!
AMG monoblock aero 2s which came standard on the W210 E55 AMG (1999-2002) and other models such as the R129 were finished in 744 Brilliant Silver paint with a machined lip with the entire wheel being clear coated. These wheels never came powder coated ever and the only color used on this specific wheel which also came in 17", 18", and 19" was 744 Brilliant Silver. The lips were always machined from factory as well. Early Aero 1 wheels were painted in Astral Silver 735 and had a polished lip, they later changed the color code to 744 and machined the lips. The 744 Brilliant Silver matches the factory center caps perfectly as shown in the video. If you have a nice color on you car I would suggest considering getting the wheels done in body color like I did on my 040 Black W210. Otherwise if you are going for the original silver it is always 744 Brilliant Silver.

I hand polished and sanded my lips and I’d say they came out pretty great. Finished with a 1500 grit in straight movements and unless you get right up to it it still looks like a machine cut. Also was basically free, just time consuming.
Beautiful!
But the real question is where to FIND AMG monoblocks in16 or 17 inch ??
+1 ... An invaluable DIY wheel post ... Cheers, a '94 C124 coupe fan . .
Totally underrated video 🤘🏼
Polished lip looks better 🔥
Would a badly curb-rashed lip be repaired by getting machined? Seems like it might remove 1/4" from the lip
Just had my monoblocks refurbished at a shop few weeks ago.
After a refurbish what you use for cleaning? Car wash soap? What is safe to use
You should wait as long as you can for the paint to harden. I would say about 4 weeks. After that I wipe down my wheels after every single drive with waterless wash. Link in my bio to the one I use. If you want to wash the sonax wheel cleaner is an excellent product to use when washing. It helps a lot if you have brake pads that produce a lot of dust. Another more gentle product would be the Eagle 1 wheel cleaner too.
How much does this cost if you don’t mind me asking
It was about $260/wheel including the dismount and mounting of tires
@@SoCal210 per wheel or total 260$
These are Styling 2‘s not Aeros. Great Video as always though.
SoCal, I'm getting ready to embark on a refinishing project (found a shop with a CNC - unfortunately they don't paint). Please tell me if I've got this correct, as it's going to involve 2 shops -
1 - machine lips to remove any rash & imperfections
2- mask the lips and shoot front and back with 744 Silver
3 - remove the masking and clear-coat entire front face with High Gloss
Thanks
A competent wheel refinish shop can do it all. My local shop did the machining and painting. I would try to avoid 2 different shops unless you personally know the people who are doing the work.
@@SoCal210 I'd love to be able to do that, but there just doesn't appear to be many places doing wheel refinishing up here in the PNW. Plenty of machine shops, although only a few with a CNC of 20"+. I'll probably do it over the winter, since I prefer to keep it garaged during rainy season
Love the channel though -a 210 Bible!
anyone have any tips on how to keep these wheels clean? mine get covered in brake dust after a couple days of driving on them.
Change your brake pads to Akebono
I am currently talking to a shop to do my Monoblocks. They said that clear coat comes in different degrees of gloss. So, something like matt, half-gloss or full-gloss. I understand from your video that the factory finish is not matt. The clear coat on my wheels is pretty dull, gloss is difficult to see. What do you think?
Clear coat dulls down over time on the wheels. A brand new monoblock from Mercedes would be a full gloss finish.
@@SoCal210 Thanks. That would be my preference. Will look great with the machined rim and new paint.
Where did you get the extended wheel lugs ?
Or what size do I need for my monoblocks on my w210 I like the flush look of them ok your one 👌
Can you share what shop did the work?
