@@SMTMainline good after noon SMT have you ever rewound coils on a Tyco pancake motor .I did one yesterday not that easy you have to very carefully pry the comuntator probably spelt that wrong off I used 36 gauge wire and 210 turns on each pole it was tight . It gave motor more speed and more pulling power i used little rubber bands that are used for people that have braces for traction tires they work better than ant tire i have tried. 36 wire size was a little bigger that what was used i thing that was 40 42 gauge with 250 turns not sure about that i lost count around 225 and cut the rest off .i thank you for getting back to model railroading .
I kinda had an obsession with these shark noses as a kid. Not so much anymore. (PA's baby) I had a Fleishmann one but I can't for the life of me remember what the paint scheme was. It may be in a box round' here somewhere. Had an all metal shell. I want to say it was a Santa Fe Warbonnet (tho atsg never had em') but I really don't recall for sure. Nice to see one of the old girls....
I bought a tyco engine with this exact motor recently. I should've looked at it more closely in the hobby shop as the wiring, pivot & other gears, brushes & springs are missing. I'll see what I have to salvage or I'll need to browse ebay
Great work on a classic odd locomotive. I have the same motor in my tyco F9. The metal gear on motor was having issues with the same issue heres the problem when I looked at it it looked like it's been chewed up the teeth are bent up not sure if I can fix it or find another gear for it since the shell etc in mint shape it be a shame to have it not run. Thankfully my Tyco 2-8-0 chattanooga has same motor but no gear issues .

In many of your videos you use a lubricant (oil) with a needle-nosed end. What kind of oil do you recommend? Any specifiic brand names for products that would be available in the USA? This technique goes far in getting locos back to life.
I have the Midnight Special version, but mine has a problem with the large gear which has some teeth broken. Can these be replaced or repaired somehow?
Take two -- hindsight is 20/20, Harrison. That darn pivot gear. Love the 🦈 nose! Now you need to open her up again and position the light back in the nose before it melts the cab. 32K and beyond... Awesome! Did you happen to catch the solar eclipse this morning? Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍
Hello Harrison, I noticed when the pivot gear was loose, you put CA glue on it and then used a lighter , does that really work. I mean seal the glue onto the pivot gear. Thanks. JC
Another amazing video, got a question for ya.. I picked up a used Rivarossi Challenger and it runs but cuts out constantly, I’ve cleaned the wheels and my track, what else could be causing a problem for it?
I would investigate the tender. Rivarossi tenders can a common source for electrical issues. Check the wheel bearings, the connection between the truck and the tender and of corse the linkage between the tender and the locomotive.
@@Brendon_up1995 It's likely got the sprung plunger wheel pickups that are either sticking or lost tension. Flip the loco and peer between the frame and wheel sets and you'll see a couple of plunger pickups. There's only a couple and notorious weak point. You may be down to only one pick up. Not really a lot you can do: have heard of using kadee coupler springs or better still, building an entire new set of wipers. Ain't no miracle cure unfortunately.
I have a question I got a old riverossi union pacific challenger for my birthday and there's rubber bands on the wheels and the one rubber band keeps coming off, do you know if it can come off
The pivot gear slipping or coming off the motor shaft, the motor's bearing spitting oil onto the commutator, pinions sheering off the block, plastic parts not fitting together properly preventing the motor from turning and bad castings.

One I forgot to mention is flashing not being properly removed from the factory causing problems with the gears.
Those basically run until they don't, they were made to go in circles at medium to high speed pulling maybe five cars for a couple of holiday seasons. I had the 0-6-0 with that motor and it would run screaming around my layout, I think it lasted about a year before something broke inside.
i think that's true of most model trains- the exception would be the hobbyist models because hobbyists are willing to spend more on their trains- especially the power units.

Neither BN nor its predecessors every owned Shark - Just PRR, NYC, B&O and EJ&E. With the thick frame, I'd say it is supposed to represent a RF-16 and not a DR-4-4-1500
It's to bad Mantua/Tyco went their seperate ways, at one time they made good trains, but Tyco went to the cheap side and the motors are way to small for train service, they worked good in race cars but not trains. Best thing you can do is re-power it with an Athear F7 drive, it is doable because I've done it. Another thing you can do is take 2 of them ( if you have 2 ) in fact any 2 Tycos will do, put them back to back, put a solid draw bar between them and wire them together, you will have 8 wheels picking up electricity giving you much better electrical pickup, the engine will run nicely together and will pull a better train. I have done this with Tycos, AHM locomotives and some other that are built with cheap electrical pickup and the cheaper 3 pole motors unlike the 5 pole in an Athearn.
@@tommurphy4307 I could, but trying to find parts for some of the foreign makes is tough at best when they need repair, you can always find parts for an Athearn plus Athearn used pretty much the same parts in most of their engines so part swapping is easy.

nothing 'classic' about these tycos- they are mostly molded plastic parts and what few metal parts there are onboard are of poor quality.

I usually use Labelle 102 oil and 106 grease but I haven't tried many other brands so I couldn't say if they are the best.

I wouldn't recommend it. If possible replace the block or drill out the pivot and replace it with part of a stainless nail.

What is the "CA" glue/cement you used here? I just got one of these and I happened across the video. Glad I checked in.
Superglue. CA stands for cyanoacrylate.

Knuckles are usually better but there is something to be said for the simplicity of horn hooks.

I wouldn't say it's impossible but honestly I usually avoid locomotives missing parts since finding replacements tends to be expensive and costly.
make brushes for it. they are soft carbon- not as difficult as you think. i make square brushes for my trix's.

I don't have a preference since I usually bring locos to my hobby shop for new tires since they tend to be cheaper.
Fleischmann makes a good range of traction tyres of different widths and diameters.
