    Jarrett, thank you for all you did for him. You truly saved him from a life in prison. I wish the best for him and I do hope you keep in touch with him. I noticed out of all the people that hugged him throughout the documentary, you are the only one he truly hugged back. At the time of the documentary, you were the only one he trusted. Again, so thankful you were there for him

      Regret means someone did something seriously wrong. It doesn’t require nor deserve empathy or compassion just because she realized it while being interviewed for a miniseries for the world to see or whenever she realized it. She added to the abuse by not reporting it. She, the adult, did not protect her own son or Anthony (both children) stuck in a constant, horrific life threatening childhood and teenage life. That is long term trauma that causes C-PTSD (which is a huge long list of horrible symptoms most people cannot imagine) and things like physical disabilities, ADHD, OCD, and so many more mental and psychological health problems.
      When someone knowingly stands by a person committing a different kind of crime like a robbery, rape, physical attack, etc. in a similar way the step-mother did, then it’s aiding and abetting or worse. They go to jail for that. However when someone knowingly stands by a severe abuser to children like this, there is absolutely no punishment for it when there should be. Abusive people get away with murder thanks to people like this. She reported what happened to her and had a choice to easily and quickly check off the box where it mentioned if any child was being abused and she did not. She was ready to stand by Burt over Anthony until she saw some paperwork that finally proved to her the type of guy Burt was. Why did those papers make all the difference in the world to her and not his actions even when she herself was abused? She deserves much worse.

      @@VioletJoy She's a poor woman with not much education herself, financially dependent on her husband. There wasn't much she could have done. She did a lot and don't forget she was also a victim of abuse. I can imagine her being severely beaten, just like the first wife who had the worst life possible. I felt so sad for her....

    I knew 10 minutes into this documentary that this boy had a very good reason to do what he did. I hate it in these shows when they say "he showed no emotion". One reason is often initial shock. In this case the kid immediately called police. He never lied, or made up stories, he admitted what he did right off the bat. Unusual, most will try to make up a story. He was devoid of emotion because that was all he ever knew. No love, no affection, no support, no friends, no education. He never learned how to feel. Not anything positive that's for sure. At one point in the documentary someone, I think it was Dad's best friend said: "He was given everything he wanted". No, he was not. Children need nurturing, love, acceptance. An XBox does not give those things. This young man was tortured mentally. He did what he had to. No one stepped up to the plate, he was abandoned by life. I dearly hope he gets a good therapist who can guide him, to see that there is good in the world and that he can go on to find some happiness in this life.

      I am the daughter of an antisocial mother. So much of what is described resonates with me. I was emotionally stilted for most of my life because I was not allowed to show emotion. I feel so bad for the children of sociopaths. Anthony did the right thing.

    • @Confidentk9sCa
      @Confidentk9sCa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Exactly…the problem is those working in the legal system (police, prosecutors, lawyers, etc.) all know this because it happens a lot. That is the common effects of long term child abuse and the justice system sees it regularly. It’s not rocket science like they pretend. Instead of pretending and choosing not to help a child, those children often end up living very difficult lives often becoming abusers themselves, or turning to drugs and alcohol to cope, suicide, crime, etc. These types who work in the justice system, who don’t care and choose to pretend ignorance, is exactly why the system fails us all. Anthony did not spend life in prison thanks to a lawyer who cared but he definitely was failed by many people in his life and will likely have a very difficult life ahead.

    • @ixizn
      @ixizn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      People saying someone has ”no emotions” when they have no education or knowledge about trauma responses make me sick. Imagine how many people have been wrongfully punished and had their lives ruined because someone decided they’re a psychopath with no moral compass, instead of being someone who is dissociated from their emotions because of what they’ve been through. Of course there should be an investigation. But that includes keeping an open mind and not assuming things based on a first glance.
      I’m so glad this boy had people in his corner at the end of the day. When the attorney choked back tears for him, I did too. When Anthony cried at the end of the Netflix doc, I couldn’t hold it back anymore. I know what it’s like to be forced to bottle everything up for so long you’re not allowed to feel anything. To see him finally cry was beautiful. I’m sure he has a lot to work through, which is normal because anyone would in his situation, but I wish him all the love, happiness and success in life possible going forward.
      Cheers to Anthony getting to live a normal life and to the people who helped him get there by keeping him out of prison and showing him the compassion he’s deserved all along. ♥️

    • @battlehymnoftheempath3610
      @battlehymnoftheempath3610 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ixizn exactly, a typical trauma response for the children of sociopaths is to not have any emotions. Showing emotions is a dangerous proposition. Any happiness, bonding love or empathy you get from others is cut off. They want you to be secluded and miserable and disconnected from love. They know that if you are connected to people, you won't need them and they can't live with that.

Anthony was abandoned by the system and neglected by the people in his life, all while his father regularly abused him and kept him captive in his home. They ask "What's normal?" And he breaks down for the first time. That poor dude. I hope the best for him. I was raised by an abusive druggie father. Mr. Jarrett, you were the perfect Attorney to defend this case. You understood the responsibility of representing someone who by legal definition committed the crime but because of the justification was innocent. Hope Anthony gets the help and support he needs to live in peace with others. Hope he completes all his probation and the crime goes off his record and he never does another day in jail.

    This is a very powerful, very disturbing account of relentless abuse characterized by, ultimately, both emotional and physical trauma of horrendous dimensions. By the time I finished watching I was ready to kill the bastard father who attempted to destroy his son, myself. And the real hero in this case is the lawyer (Jarrett) who represented Anthony pro bono, and who worked almost unbelievably hard to do so. This is a difficult documentary to watch, but well worth the effort if you’re interested in gaining new insight into the types of abuse that one powerful individual can impose upon others he controls…and the heroic efforts required by those able to do so, to rescue victims without the means to rescue themselves. Highly recommended - but be ready to feel angry, and, ultimately, terribly sad at the thought that this is unlikely to be an isolated example of such persistent abuse. Anthony’s case is not an isolated example of how power corrupts - and how absolute power corrupts - absolutely.

    I'm watching the Netflix documentary and just wanted to vent.
    Anthony had been abandoned time and again by people who should've protected him; he suffered isolation, emotional and physical trauma, and was deprived of a normal/healthy development during his formative years.
    And that prosecutor had the audacity to say he lacks empathy?! Damn right he does, so what? None of the people in whose"care" he was deserved empathy, and since there was no one he could've trusted and could've learned from, Anthony's ability to feel empathy is limited--which is not his fault.
    Even if he recovers to an extent, he may never fully heal and will in one way or another always be scarred.
    Depending on the mental health diagnosis, it can turn out like a retrovirus; you can manage the symptoms, but the underlying condition never goes away.
    Thank you for standing up for him, Jarrett, and in a way for all of us who went through childhood abuse!

However, also happy that this lawyer helped him without charging him a dime. Ultimately saved his life. You can certainly tell that Anthony didn’t know how to handle the love and care he got since he has never seen it before. Killing the father was absolutely justified. Can you imagine what would happen to Anthony is he recovered from the gunshots?

    I was the child of an abusive parent and eh I don't blame him. I understand him but laws and what not... You just can't murder people who threaten you

      Lol the child was kept in a house with no education, you are taught all these things🙂 you are taught social skills… you are perceiving from your personal experience and view. I’m not saying it was ok but if I was im his shoes, with the knowledge he had, with the experience he had,,, survival mode kicked in… I wouldn’t say I wouldn’t have done it🙂 if things were this simple there wouldn’t be world 1 and 2🙂 slavery, 🙂 … these things were done by a large amount of people to say I would have done differently.

      If you haven't watched the documentary, I suggest you do. In this case, you will understand why he felt he had no choice. Yes ..murder is wrong, but you have to look at the bigger picture. Right from the time that child was taken and what led up to his actions. And law decided to let him have a life he wasn't given by the people who was responsible for it.
