    You don't need to create a Windows USB or backup drivers, The Ally has cloud restore built into the BIOS. All you have to do after installing the SSD is run it in the BIOS and it'll download Windows 11 as well as all the required Asus software for the Ally.

    • @Tyler-hs9eu
      @Tyler-hs9eu ปีที่แล้ว +53

      So as simple as removing old ssd, putting in new one then running it and the ally will download everything needed for fresh start?
      Just want to clarify as this stuff can be a little tricky at times

    • @nosirrahx
      @nosirrahx ปีที่แล้ว +20

      A lot of people like to blow away their OEM install and do either a fresh install or if they are more advanced, build their own modified Windows install with all of the crap they wont ever use removed ahead of time. Dumping drivers and integrating them into a new image is pretty trivial as all you need is 2 DISM commands, one to dump and one to integrate.
      Since the hardware in all of these new handhelds predates Windows 10 and 11 its a good idea to pre-integrate drivers. I have read that some people can't even do a clean install without drivers because the Windows installer cannot see the storage at all without them.
      I've got an Ally on the way (and an AOKZOE A1Pro) and the very first thing I am doing is getting drivers up to date, dumping them and then integrating them into a modified Windows 10 image. I cannot stand looking at a start menu filled with crap I wont ever use.

      Yeah let’s entrust your personal data to manufacturers who totally aren’t trying to convert ownership to subscription-based economy. Next thing you know, your data is behind a paywall. Not long after that, you’ll barely own your own device with monthly subscriptions.

    Hello. Just wanted to say thank you very much for this tutorial. While I did try to restore through Asus cloud recovery first it would never work. I had all the updates installed, firmware, bios, set time correctly. It would never finish the recovery. Once I followed your instructions I had a fully functioning Ally with an upgraded ssd! Keep up the great work.

    Very unnecessary and over complex way of upgrading SSD when ASUS has cloud restore function that would install a new instance of Windows 11 with all the drivers and apps for the Ally without you doing anything. This video would just confuse a bunch of folks who never did fresh install before and would create a buggy and unstable platform as a result of trying to ‘monkey see, monkey do’ approach

  • @slickrounder6045
    @slickrounder6045 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    It's incredible how easy it is to get access to the ssd and upgrade it. Pity the prices for 2230 ssd's are still steep relative to 2280, but in the future the gap can narrow. Allegedly one doesn't even need to make a backup of windows 11 and the drivers since the Asus Bios has cloud restore that can grab everything automatically which is awesome.

    To prevent damage to the components, I would recommend disconnecting the battery first before replacing the SSD. A larger SSD than a 512 is only needed if Ally is your only gaming PC. I don't see the need to keep my entire steam library of PC games when majority of the time I mainly focusing on play a few games while all the other games are just taking up space.

Use M.2 NVMe heatsink, 2280 SSD Heat Sink Support Single Double Sided with Thermal Silicone Pads for PC for the SSD [$10us]. Use PCIE4.0 Transfer Board for Rog Ally Handheld SSD Adapter 90 Degrees [this will make the installation horizontal instead of vertical so no need to cut any plastic] $10us. If your device is unpowered, disconnecting battery is not strictly necessary. Your only concern is a static charge that may remain from the last power on, but if you spend 5-10 minutes while removing the screws and opening the back cover, the static charge should dissipate. I would still suggest that disconnecting the battery and waiting 5 minutes just out of precaution is the safest approach.

    Could you perhaps make a video showing how to transfer save files from the steam deck to the rog? Both steam games and non-steam games?

    Put on an eGPU to that and see how actual its power is.

    between the guy telling people to disconnect the speakers thinking it was the battery and this video just yolo-ing it I wonder how many less savy people are going to to brick things hot swapping ssd's like that. The wire in the middle which is black and red looks to be the battery connector, you should carefully remove that (don't pull the wire, carefully push the white connector out) then press the power button a few times to drain any remaining power then swap the SSD

    Is it worth it to put on better thermal paste? I didn't see anything about liquid metal or premium thermal paste on the ROG listing. I’d be interested in seeing if better thermal paste would add more performance then the paste already applied.

    Would you recommend Tiny 11 Builder for this as an alternative to full Windows 11?

    Disconnect the battery before you start messing with the ssd.

    Didn't know about Double Driver. That's actually super useful. Do you plan on covering over locking if Afterburner would allow?

    You can install a full length ssd with a bit of modification.

    Are you planning to redo the benchmarks with the updated drivers before the Ally’s official launch? I’d like to see if there was any optimizations made since the announcement.

    would love to know if the performance is better with your clean install of windows without the bloatware :)

    Wondering with a small system like this is if Tiny 11 or Ghost Spectre Super Lite would have any advantages. I am really looking forward to a Windows Shell geared towards gamers. I use to install Kodi as my Windows Shell with audio, USB and a few apps in the startup. Exiting Kodi would take me back to default Windows. I believe I saw Lunchbox bigbox had a shell option.

    Would be a lot easier and faster to just use an NVMe enclosure and Macrium Reflect to just clone everything from the old 512gb to the 1tb swap and then start up and then merge the blank partition to give the full space but then again if you did that your video would of only been like 3 minutes long instead.

    Personally, I would have just cloned it (so I don't have to download all my games and redo my tweaks again). So much less work (been doing it for 10 years+ as a computer tech) and I don't know what potential issues you're specifically referring to, but there's far more that can go wrong trying to reinstall windows from scratch for people who aren't used to having to do it. And, even if I were going to reinstall windows, I would never use "backed up" drivers...ever.
    And doesn't the Ally have the ability to automatically download an official image from ASUS to install from BIOS onto the new SSD so you don't even need to worry about creating a windows USB or any drivers?

      I tried to do that once for my laptop, but there were no apps that could clone a 500gb drive to a 1TB drive
      Any apps you know that could do that? (definitely foss)

    • @justo316
      @justo316 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fatemehhamounpou1815 there would have to be literally hundreds of tutorials on TH-cam showing you how to do it. And everyone has their favourite method. Cos I usually work with 2280 ssds, I would normally use Samsung data migration with Samsung ssds cos it is definitely the easiest and requires less input from me. Otherwise macrium reflect for everything else.

    I bought an ssd enclosure that fits 2230 drives. I'm going to put the new drive in it and plug the enclosure into Ally. Then run Macrium Reflect to clone the Ally drive to the new drive. after that all i have to do is take out the old one, put the new one in, and then the old one can go into the enclosure to be used as an external SSD on my desktop

    Can Double Driver be used to fresh install Windows 10 with Ally's drivers?
