Very good tips that can help save you a lot of time and troubles in case of incompatibility e.g. with Logic! Thanks very much for these suggestions. 💪🏻👍🏻👏🏻🙏🏻
A far better advice is to follow the one year rule. That is to work from the assumtion that you should always stay one year behind on the OS. This is especially important, when dealing with audio software. Most other types of software (video editors, graphics, spreadsheets, etc.) only require that the application itself is compatible. This isn't true for DAWs, though. They rely on software (drivers, plugins, etc.) from lots of different vendors, to work reliably together. When a new OS version is released, start checking the websites of all the manufactures of software you rely on (even those that you have recieved compatibility mails from). If there is one vendor that you can't comfirm compatibility from, after one year, contact the vendors support. Not only should you check for compatibility with your OS, but compatibility with your DAW as well. Once you have confirmed compatibility for ALL software you use, then it's time to upgrade. NOT before! All the sexy new features are useless, if they crash your DAW. Of cause, all the advice about thoroughly backing up everything, before upgrading, is still vital!
The one year rule is a great method as well! I just like to update a little more regularly so I have developed this method that allows me to do that but also always be able to revert if something breaks.
New on M-series. Monterey preinstalled so need to go up in version but thinking Sonoma for some reason. That's what I had on my other machine and Logic Pro 10.8.1, and it was stable. I am going more minimal with plugins on this machine, but I am of course a bit nervous on going to high and also moving over to Logic Pro 11. Can Logic Pro 10.7.5 open my Logic projects from v11? Got friends who are still on lower versions and would be good that they can open my projects if needed.
I am on Sonoma and can confirm it is running Logic Pro and all my plugins very well. Logic Pro 11 can open and run older Logic files. Anything Logic 10 opens normally. Anything below Logic 10 will be converted and saved as a new file but will still run just fine on 11
Thanks for sharing your insight Chris. I'd like to add (if you didn't already) that it's very wise to NOT upgrade anything (MacOS, Logic Pro, etc.) when you're in the middle of project or gig. I've done this before and it turned into a nightmare with Logic Pro issues galore.
I use an old iMac with Vetura & have 2 bootable ext drives with Ventura. On the T9 drive it Logic automatically updated to the latest version but on the T7 drive it did not! Any thoughts?
@ Oh no I’d rather have the latest version. I’m only wishing the same good thing happened on the T7 drive or if there’s a way I can have the new version on it!
This is the reason why engineers are picky about which company’s plugins we buy. Quick turnaround time on Mac updates and continued support are built into the pricing structure of purchasing plugins & should be heavily considered when buying!
Great Video! Can you please make a video on MacOs file management for music production. I’m new to Mac Os and find it’s way of handling files very confusing compared to Windows. I am almost considering a clean install of MacOs because of the temporary files eating up my hard drive and lost plugins after moving my Native Instrument library to a new SSD
With the new Apple Silicon machines neither can make a true bootable backup anymore natively. There is a complicated workaround using CCC but I haven’t tried it personally (see the Mac World link in description for details) I slightly prefer the interface of CCC for backups and in my experience it is a tad faster than SuperDuper but I still use both interchangeably.
I have an issue with Logic 11 and Sonoma, when saving a session... The finder folder view doesn't show even after clicking on the disclosing magnifying arrow to enlarge the folder options available. It only shows the drop down menu of last folders that can be selected. Not sure if this is a bug or am I missing something, as this usually worked fine earlier.
I have my installed MacOS on a fast external SSD (Thunderbolt connection). If I would update MacOS, I have the option to use a new SSD in the external enclosure. That way, I have the previous installation ready to swap when needed. That would take me probably less than 10 minutes. And if I don't need to go back to the previoud Msc OS, then I have a bootable backup which you can never have too many of. Extra benefits: I don't have to pay for Apple's SSD upgrades when getting a new Mac.
Another point to add, test your backups. Aka do a Restore. The amount of people I know who backup, but have never even tested their DR process is crazy. Don't wait until it breaks!
Chris, I have an intel machine but would like to update to Logic 11. I gather the stem splitting and chromaverb will not work but should I do it at all? I cannot really justify buying a new computer. What are your thoughts?
Yes that is true, but I think it is worth it for the updated drummer and the new bass and keyboard session players. Especially if you are a songwriter or producer.

To update the macOS just download from the app store and then run the installer. As for reverting to an old os I do not have a video on that yet.
