Montréal: Dump truck fire is the latest action in the city's wild urban jungle 12-13-2021

- At 1h pm on Monday December 13th 2021 a dump truck's contents caught fire while in operation at the corner of Ste-Catherine Street and Drummond Street in Montréal, Canada. Early video footage shows bystanders attempting to put out the flames burning through rubbish that has most likely just been collected. Fire department was called in and fought the fire while the heavy garbage collection vehicle activated its hydraulic command and moved some of the trash around and out. At more than one time during the intervention, the truck repositioned for precaution in the challenging and critical high density urban environment.

The german firedepartment trucks ("fire engines") have a hose for quick access. So they can quite immediately start fighting the fire with the water tank's content. Meanwhile other firefighters can start building up the water supply from the hydrant to the truck.
We use to have them on a lot of departments here in America but NFPA got all crazy against them and seldom if ever you see them anymore. Use to put out and fight a lot of fires with those hose reel lines. The London Fire Brigade alone tackles 50,000 fires per year; around 40,000 of these are dealt with using the hose reel. Hose reels or booster lines as we called them as a rule are always my first choice for a rapid attack on fires in vehicles, dumpsters and fires in a fireproof building limited to a couple of rooms. It all boils down to looking at a fire and in 2-3 seconds knowing if you need low or high flow to deal with it.
Jut FYI, on the three departments I was in warm weather the pump to tank valve was open both valve to booster reels where open and the guys in the jump seats or compartments could bail out grab a line and the pump operator driver just need to put the engine into pump and rev the engine from the cab for 75% of the time would be all that was needed for a fast knock down.
We have the same in Poland. It is enough for the firefighters to get out of the car and immediately stretch the line for extinguishing.

@@bendermi Good reply from someone who does not know how to properly use one. I would suggest you contact your local fire dept and ask them to show you proper use of them so you will know how to maybe someday use it to save your life.

@@jonathancaouette3440 there’s a difference between running around like in a panic and putting some pep in your step to get the job done. Slowly getting off the truck, slowly pulling a line, then decided to put your mask and gloves on is just plain unacceptable. The fire is growing and will damage property. Property conservation is a job of the fire department.

Guy I used to work with drives a front loader maggot wagon now and he told me that is the first thing you are supposed to do in case of fire. Find safe location and dump the whole thing

Here in Australia, we have ready hoses which as soon as the truck stops and the pump is on, water is pumped, no need to lay out 7 different hoses.

What really is the rush? Its trash, no one is in immediate danger. Rushing to put it out would likely cause someone to be hurt vs the actual fire.

I've seen things like this before. One day at work, a garbage truck caught on fire in front of my office window. The fire department had them dump the burning load on the street in front of my window 😲
That's standard procedure for most companies. Clean up costs and fines might cost several thousand to 10k but a new truck might cost a couple of hundred grand.
I feel like a douche bag critiquing fire fighters as I could never be one but…….it seems like there’s no sense of urgency to put this fire out.
There is no urgency. It's garbage, inside a truck and it ain't going anywhere. Hurrying and panicking is stupid on many levels. The're very professional and in control more than anything.

I drove a garbage truck for many years and always said if my truck caught fire I would dump it right then and there in the street........number one save the truck!
My colleagues had an explosion in their garbage truck: someone dumped explosives in the trash, and when the press was activated on the garbage truck, one of those explosives went off. It caused a big enough explosion to kill the press and scare the begeezus out of my colleagues. Police and fire squad came over, cordoned off the area, the EOD was called in and they took the remaining explosives out. They happened to be those things they use to shoot lines from ship to ship.

You all love to complain. The fire is contained in a metal trash truck. The fire was put out. The truck is still drivable. No exposures damaged. TH-cam firefighters just love to complain.

@@j81870 I've been a firefighter for the last 7 years and work for a career fire department, I think I know what I'm talking about. I know full well it takes a bit of time to get things set up, but like I said. Act like you care, put in a little hustle because people are watching (and cameras are recording) it makes a difference especially in the court of public opinion. I'm not bashing on them to be a dick, I just want to see everyone preform at their best. It's as simple as that.

it was contained within the garbage truck idk if that required super quick urgency. no one was in harms way.
Here in New Brunswick, when crews get a hot load the first thing they do is dump it in the road to remove the fire source from the truck. Clean up is cheaper than a new truck, lol

As a retired fire fighter my advice is for garbage truck crew to immediately dump the load on to the street as soon as it’s determined there is a fire in the body. Garbage is is packed so tight to the truck that it’s impossible to get any good water penetration. If the dump is delayed too long the trucks hydraulics may become damaged and won’t be able to be dumped. You are then looking at the possibility of total destruction of a truck worth about 400k to replace. Also no one should be standing close to or under the raised hopper section. It could fall at any time if the fire has damaged the trucks hydraulics.

It's 2:04 when the engineer pulled the parking brake on engine 225, and no water flowing until 4:34, a full 2-1/2 minutes. It never ceases to amaze me how long it takes for some departments to get water on a fire. Engage the PTO, hit "Tank To Pump", and be ready to put water to the line as soon as the FF has the line pulled. There is no excuse for this taking longer than 60 seconds.

@@maximilianosantander2272 There is a big metal blade that is in the body of the truck. That part is separated from the cab. Also it looks like they didn't have a lot of trash in the body of the truck.

They should go ahead and dump the load of trash before the whole truck goes up and then bring a backhoe loader in to clean up the trash
The truck is insured. Why dump a load of garbage in a downtown area? They cold face fines AND will have to deal with the cost of having machines and trucks come and pick it all up. The driver handled this correctly as far as the bosses at the company go.
Every time I watch a garbage truck fire, I can't help but worry the heat damaged the hydraulic lines or cylinders that are holding up that super heavy compactor door.... if that failed & slammed shut..omg...
Well at least that fire wasn't as bad as when the truck it self goes critical and burns down. Those cab over front load Mack trucks make quite the show when they go.

I seen garbage truck's go fast with contents, debris, and chemicals being very dangerous. Sometimes hazmat response is needed too.
The reason a line went to the hydrant was to prolly refill the water back into the pumper truck's water tanks, and finally, I think they did an excellent job both the garbage crew and fire crew.
This is why you dispose of flameable liquids correctly

These appear as bad as the america firefighters and the equipment they use also seems to be light years behind what we have in Europe. I even had a american fireman agree there equipment wasn't as good as European equipment.

Open the truck and dump the load; whatever illegal dumping / cleanup costs are will be cheaper than buying a new truck.
can as well drive the truck to a site outside built-up areas or nearby a fire station and dumb the burning load instead of keeping it in the truck

Ja to sie zastanawiam dlaczego straż pożarna w Ameryce działa tak powoli. Zanim oni wode puścili to w polsce byłoby to już ugaszone. U nas straż wybiega z wozu już przygotowana w aparatach, rozkłada linie jak najszybciej sie da i gaszą. A w ameryce muszą powoli dojechać, wysiąść sobie na spokojnie, rozejrzeć się, ubrać na spokojnie, linie spacerkiem rozłożyć, jeszcze rękawiczki nałożyć...niby taki rozwinięty kraj a to aż zadziwia. W tej śmieciarce można było dużo strat uniknać gdyby dupe ruszyli.
To those who comment on how slow the FF were, they are trained not to panic and run when there's no need to and avoid unnecessary injuries like tripping over hoses or whatever, it's not like there was a baby in that burning truck stupid.

This happens because people throw used mobiles in the trash. Their batteries catch fire when cracked, and since garbage trucks compress trash to fit more that's exactly what happens.

Out of 100 fire videos I watch I see maybe 2 where the fire department act with any sense of urgency whatsoever. Sad to watch.
Believe it or not. This is intentional. When lives are not at risk, it is safer to go slower. It is far easier to get hurt fighting a fire when you are running. So, if you do not have to run, you walk. We all want to see fires being put out as fast as possible with minimal property damage. For a while, that was the world we lived in. But now, it’s all about safety. The firefighters are not trying to save the garbage truck. They are trying to keep it from spreading and putting out the fire. That’s all.
@@Veritas-invenitur I understand slow deliberate actions carefully planned and executed. That's not how I see most of them. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes or more from the time the equipment arrives until the first drop of water is applied to the fire. Just doesn't seem efficient to me,

Could they have been any slower. European firemen would have been hitting that with water within seconds of arrival they automatically grab the hose on a real and start fighting the fire while others are un rolling a larger hose. And connecting another to a hydrant.

I'm just here to read about Europeans using booster reels, how they would have had this fire out in 8 seconds, and then sorted all of the recycling and had some tea before wrapping up and heading back to the station.

At over $300,000 USD for a replacement. Dump the trash on the road! With all the oil and plastic burning better to get it on the ground. The last fire we had were I work cost $450,000 USD. Burned for 8 days . Hoses burned through so it couldn't be dumped.

Wh had a garbage truck that once had its contents catch on fire but in this cae the driver pulled over or stopped wherever he could and while the fire department was on its way, he actually unloaded all of the garbage that was in the truck right out there and onto the street, guessing he thought that was the easiest way to get to garbage that was actually on fire, then the frire department arrived and hosed it all down, but the thing was the smell that it all gave off, you could literally smell all that a mile away, then after the main part of the fire was put out, then they ghad to reload it all back into the truck, made for one heck of a mess, a Real smelly mess......LOL

@@bond1j89 Yup, there's another video on here where a fire progresses enough to where the rear hydraulics are inop, so they have to use their gas saws to cut giant holes in the side of the truck. Takes forever.
