Inside the Chieftain's Hatch Snapshot: AMPV MCmd

  • The AMPV is the long-awaited replacement for the venerable M113 based series of vehicles. In this video, I walk around the vehicle with the AMPV product manager LTC Costa, and pepper him with unexpected questions in order to shed a little more light on this new vehicle which we'll be buying by the thousand but seems to have somewhat gone under the radar. Vehicle filmed at Warren, MI, courtesy of PEO GCS.

      @@chrisandrews414 Fact: All brad hulls leave the factory with OD green CARC paint but gradually turn that fleshy color as PMCS is performed over time. They were purposely designed to abrade & accrete the exfoliated skin cells of hapless combat crewmen & thus accumulate a soft outer shell that absorbs energy from ground seeking radars.
      Organic stealth technology of the future at no additional cost to the taxpayer beyond bandaids and bactine. If your track still has a radar signature after the 1st year past fielding, clearly your crew are not performing enough -10 level maintenance/making suitable sacrifices of inferior flesh to propitiate the Machine Spirits. Advise all such commanders to administer remedial training through percussive maintenance in accordance with Holy Primer 9-2350-294-10.

    Just wanted to point out, that while common parts between vehicle models can save a lot of money, the budget is always just what it is, and even if everything is cheaper, the priority for replacement parts will always go to the maneuver battalions before the support units, and when funding gets tight, it's the vehicles of the support units that will be sitting deadlined because their parts requests keep getting denied.

    I remember talking with a US Army combat engineer in the mid 2000s and he mentions getting a look at the early turretless Bradley as it was being proposed by BAE. It was being shown off as a medical variant, but he mentioned looking at all the space inside with envy, imagining all the stuff he could store away in there.

      The M113 is trash. We will see how this goes, but it seems crazy to think it is 2023 and only Fort Stewart has these so far. • @glenndean6
    @glenndean6 ปีที่แล้ว +198

    Interesting footnote on M113 replacement history ... of course the original M113 replacement was the Bradley (infantry APC to infantry fighting vehicle). But for support vehicles, the Armored Systems Modernization program in the '90s had some replacement platforms for the M113: the M4 Command and Control vehicle (on an M993 carrier chassis), and the XM11 Bradley Ambulance (on an M2A2 chassis). Those programs were terminated in the 1999-2001 timeframe to fund Stryker and Future Combat System. The M4s did serve in the 3ID command post for the initial Iraq invasion and one of the specific command vehicles is a monument at Fort Stewart. There were still ongoing minor M113 upgrades in process when that activity was terminated in 2007 (again, FCS). But s=once FCS was terminated and it became obvious we needed a new replacement for M113 the Office of the Secretary of Defense finally green-lighted the AMPV program in 2012.

    We rolled up into Baghdad in our M113A2's back in May 2003. We went out daily in the tracks looking for and destroying UXOs. We never had much issue with ours except for some parts shortages while the supply lines were being consolidated. Thankfully the Iraqis had some M113's that they no longer needed so we stripped parts off theirs to keep ours running. We only really had an issue when the added slat and cage armor was applied. Too much weight, it would actually bend the road arms on the suspension and we could no longer hit the governed max speed of 45 MPH.

    I’m surprised those wire cutters aren’t standard in every armored rifle in the US army tbh. My head’s been saved by one a few times before. Not just with wires but low hanging branches too.
    Edit: I’m also surprised energy attenuating seats are not standard across the board in the army. No matter how much armor you got, crew and dismounts are still squishy in a dynamic event. I remember when moving from an ABCT to an SBCT and being surprised by how though out even the seats are (at least on the new DVH A1s I now roll with so idk if that’s been rectified on newer variants sitting in those ABCT motor pools.)

    • @ashesofempires04
      @ashesofempires04 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's less surprising when you consider when most of the vehicles were designed, and how long it takes for even minor upgrades like that to make it through testing. And it may have ended up that for one reason or another those seats can't be retrofitted into older vehicles without issues. Or they're slated for introduction but only as part of a larger upgrade package. So there's a mountain of seats in a warehouse waiting to be installed when the vehicles go through Lima and Anniston.

(Ironically inspired by the M113) It's just unbelievably massive. I feel like it's going way beyond it's purpose of replacing the M113. I know a lot of people complain about the armor and such on the M113, but it was simple. It was a lightly armored box that could swim, transport soldiers and evacuate the wounded. The AMPV is just a monster. A huge, heavy target that's lacking any weapons. I'm not sure it's a good choice tbh.

      I actually get angry when I see Ukrainians tooling around in them on the battlefield. NATO countries are too cowardly to provide Ukraine with actual NATO IFVs or MBTs, but they COULDN'T WAIT to pawn their dog shit M113's off on the poor Ukrainians and then act like they did something "heroic" by donating "hundreds of M113s". Any modern NATO MRAP is dramatically more survivable than an M113 is. Hell, an armored Humvee is probably more survivable than an M113.
      Funnily enough, just a few days ago a video was posted online of a Ukrainian armored Humvee running over a landmine. EVERYONE inside the Humvee survived. They survived because they were moving very quickly through the field and when they ran over the mine, they were going fast enough that the explosion didn't trigger until the mine was basically under the rear bed of the Humvee.
      It blew the entire back end of the Humvee off, but the crew compartment appeared to remain totally intact, and four of the five occupants bugged out and set up defensive positions around the Humvee, while the driver or rear left passenger was laying on the ground but was moving around. Everyone definitely survived the initial explosion, and it appeared that only one guy suffered ANY injuries at all. I was suitably impressed.
      But had they been tooling around in an M113 instead, they'd probably all be dead. Honestly, I get worked up thinking about how cowardly and incompetent "the west" has been in regards to Ukraine. I get especially infuriated when I see Ukraine begging for more equipment and I think about all of the armored Humvees and MRAPs that Dementia Joe Biden GAVE TO THE FVCKING TALIBAN a year ago.
      I get worked up into a rage just thinking about a bunch of fvcking Muslim terrorists driving around Afghanistan in AMERICAN ARMORED VEHICLES and using them to murder Afghani civilians with American machine guns while wearing American uniforms, comms and body armor. Every single piece of equipment that Dementia Joe gave to the Taliban could've gone to Ukraine instead. HUNDREDS of MRAPs and armored Humvees and God only knows what else. Instead, we are shipping Ukraine a bunch of borderline worthless M113s. Basically big metal coffins.

    If I'm honest, AMPVEE already sounds fairly iconic, being similar to the HUMVEE. I wouldn't be slightly surprised if that just stuck.
    I am somewhat surprised that the vehicle's main fuel is external, positioned right next to the main egress. I understand this is not a frontline vehicle and that modern military-grade ground vehicle fuels are less flammable than gasoline, but still...I suppose in any event, one compromised tank or even both would not prevent them from scooting far enough to get away from the fire and then escape the vehicle if necessary.

      Latter model M113’s had external fuel tanks added outside the ramp just like this one.

      The fuel won't just randomly light up. You need oxygen in the tanks which there won't be unless enough fuel was leaked out and then you hit it with incendiary munition.
