Unfortunately, this happens all too often. The Pacific Soup in California is an example of power-hungry AA leaders who do not care about the traditions.

There are no leaders in AA, only humble servants. And there are no rules, only suggestions. And we are not doctors. We leave medication issues between ourselves and our doctors. There’s is one very important job we have on this earth, and that is to keep ourselves alive. If medication keeps us alive, then we must take our medication. A A is only for those who wish to stop drinking. Period.

Im Troy . I left the Brain washing off the AA fellow ship after 4years ove going Dayly with out a drink. THE TRUTH IS . THAT this WAS THe VERY THINGS THAT DROVE ME AWAY. THE PROGRAM IS ABOUT SAYING LIVES .Bottom line. To help and get.help out side help if needed. Not to run the a person who has a problem down .

This group preys on the people attending the Tully Hill rehab facility. I was briefly sucked in this way. When I left, butternut members intimidated me by following me to other meetings.

“Another group member committed suicide in 2008. One former member recalled hearing a troubled young man at meetings repeatedly describe how he wanted to kill himself, laying out clearly his plans. Months later, he carried out his plan. No one in the group took action, the former member said.”
    (Quoted from the full article)
Interestingly, the last place THIS young man was prior to his death was Commonwealth Rehab. This is a Rehab run by Crouse Hospital.
Hmm... I wonder if the good doctor in the video would be willing to run comparative statistics on clients vs. members whose sobriety ended in overdose or suicide. That could be a compelling read.
The Syracuse Group definitely did take action- every time this young man mentioned suicide.

Yeesh, that was the longest pharmaceutical ad ever.
So let me get this straight: Syracuse.com is doing a hit piece on the Syracuse AA group, and their primary leads are the mentally ill drop-outs?

Steve Stevenson He does sound like a tyrant of sorts.
Shame on these vultures for even considering such an “investigation,” a word that I use loosely, considering the complete absence of anything that even resembles objectivity.
They directly accuse the alcoholics of killing the kid who hung himself, but fail to mention that suicidal ideation is a side effect of the drug he was on, Prozac. Add alcohol to Prozac and you have got yourself a suicide cocktail. An ex-drunk “telling” you to ween off your meds doesn’t carry quite the risk, and there are other AA groups that likely don’t give two shits.
The preachy drunks will probably shun all this nonsense, but if they were smart, they would go after these opinionated hacks for libel/defamation of character.

In some places it isn’t easy. Where I’m at in Columbus, most of the meetings aren’t like this, but a couple are. However, there are a ton of meetings in Columbus, it’s easier to find one that is pro-meds than anti. That’s not the entire United States.

There's a lot of this attitude throughout AA, even in "mainstream" AA. It's simply suspiciousness at all medications and an assumption that ALL medications by EVERY alcoholic/addict constitute relapse or addictive behavior. AA is literally stuck in a time warp of 1939, where it believes ALL addiction can and should be treated by its own brand of "spiritualism". It's an unregulated group of untrained and undereducated non-professional ex-addicts who insist on a narrow set of tools to treat addiction. For all the "millions" they claim to save there are many millions more who are lost between the cracks. Of course, members always blame the ADDICT, because "the program is perfect. It's only addicts who fail the program." Very closed, sick thinking.
