I love the fact that Mark pretty confidently says 'this is the game everyone will be talking about'. Here I am, 6 years later, jost bought a copy, played 3 hours and fell in love with the game. Best thing I played since Diablo 1 back in 1997.
I love Mark's laid back, down-to-earth approach to video-game reviewing. You've got to respect the fact that even though he isn't all that great at Demon's Souls/Dark Souls, he can still give the series the credit it is due - a quality that seems absent in many people these days.
I feel that the dark souls estus system would have benefited this game better than its original inclusion in dark souls. Since the game punishes you with death by making you start from the beginning of a level (ontop of halving your health) it would seem fair of them to refresh your methods of healing, so that it wouldn't punish you with grass grinding and instead encourage you to get better and use your estus more strategically while playing through a stage.
I haven't been this engrossed in a game since Zelda ocarina which happens to be my favorite game of all time. If it wasn't for nostalgia these souls games would be #1 lb 4 lb ranked
Anyone who got the: Demon's Souls Platinum Trophy represent! I'm a proud owner of that beautiful and rewarding Platinum. Over a hundred hours put in, gallons of tears and sweat, and hundreds of deaths, but oh so worth it!
Back in 2013, I stumbled upon this review. I was exploring the library for my brand new PS3. Never heard of this franchise back then, but the name "Demon's Souls" sounded so cool to me and the gameplay, concepts and atmosphere presented in this review really caught my interest. This felt like a modern day NES game somehow. Made me think of Ghost n' Goblins and Demon's Crest style wise. 9 years later I still play this series almost daily. You can't help but being immersed in the beautiful areas and the online play of the Souls games. Thank you, Classic Game Room for introducing me to Demon's Souls and the games that followed.
I like this game more than Dark Souls. Hell, I recently got a PS3 basically just for this game. Made a Blueblood sword build and beat the hell out of it, too.
I just started this game. I played about 5 hours before beating the first level. And I'll tell you, when I did, it was the most victorious I have ever felt in any video game. This is an epic, intense, one-of-a-kind game and I LOVE it.
Hey 5 years later I know, but Shields take off the Fun of the game, why Dodge and learn the boss If you can hold L1 and defend, I recommend to play without It, It's much more fun.
Me: Hey are you still playing Demon Souls. Friend: Sorry I got bored and quit playing. Me: Oh okay...so in other words you got stuck on a boss and gave up. Friend: Pretty much.
In celebration of Dark Souls coming out I'm watching this again :D I remember watching this review when it came out 2 years ago, and playing Demon Souls myself for 2 weeks daily. :D
I just love Dark Souls, to me the beginning part where you have to ring the bells basically up until you get to Anor Lando is so relaxing and a blast to play. I wish my Ps3 hadn't crapped out before I knew this gem existed 😭
I just got into the souls series and I'm thinking about buying a ps3 just to play this and maybe do a metal gear solid marathon. Dark souls 1 is great Souls 2 lost me but I still finished it and I love Souls 3, fantastic fucking series of games
This video right here made me order demons souls online (cause it wasnt available here) on 2009.I got the deluxe edition and then the collectors edition for dark souls. Thanks CGR
there is a developer message tells you that world 2 enemies are susceptible to pierce attacks at the first stairs at the beginning of the level, (world), it doesn't matter, it is old game, and the review is old, so just forget what I said, just talking to my self.
I've been playing this game for almost a month now. Reached soul level 44 and killed all the first level Bosses (The're real easy to kill), but man are the rest of the bosses time consuming. This game is awesome. It's only hard if you act reckless and try to rush through it, but if you take it slow and play safe you'r going to make it eventually. I suppose it's all about how much time you put into it. Wish I had more of that. :P
Acrobat Old king doran would like to have a word with you lol. The game gets a lot harder with pure black world tendency and some of the NPC black phantoms are brutal. I feel that the environments are harder than most of the bosses imo with a couple exceptions.
Demon's Souls reminded me of why I'm not a fan of RPGs. Although I was able to play this game longer than Elder Scrolls Oblivion which was a bore fest.
I actually liked it, he shows nice high quality gameplay, no quick montages, he just talks about it in a very normal human tempo there's no rattling involved. I prefer this type of review over any professional one anyday ^^
I wonder if Mark still plays this game. Its excellent. I actually bought my PS3 for this game and a few others of course, but this is the 1st game I have bought for my Playstation 3, and remains my most played at least until Mag comes out, I just loved that game.
@ISnickers1337I what do you mean when you say "Oblivion is no match for Demons souls" ? i loved Oblivion and just bought Demons souls and i'll get it next week. Which one is better to you?
One of my favourite games on the PS3. If you can get through the first 2 or so levels without giving up already you will get used to the game and become a total addict like me and many others. I nearly finished my second plythrough and I still have alot of character builds and secrets to try.
Does this game go online? I'm getting a PS3 early next year, and I have to know if this game is online-only or not. I want to be able to buy it without having to worry about the servers possibly shutting down from what I've heard. Single player at least would be fine.
@synrbone i wanna know what the music is too @ 0:40 , i could play the whole game with that beat....lol....this game looks AWESOME, i'm sooooo late! buying it tommorow
@CrimsonFyre I use an arcade style joystick for fighting games for the exact reason you're listing. I've played Demon's Souls a lot and still occasionally make the healing mistake. Usually happens when I haven't played in awhile and come back to it. Once you get the hang of the controls, it's definitely loads of fun. By the 2nd or 3rd playthrough you'll make your character look like this medieval badass.
I'm curious about this game and would certainly like to try it, though I fear it may be too hardcore for a mortal such as I. Must find and see how badly I do.
This game is hard, but I think a lot of people overstate how hard it is. It starts out very frustrating, but once you start to learn the intricacies, you'll actually find it fairly easy. You do get a great sense of having "mastered" the game.
I've heard so many amazing things about the souls games now that its free on PS+ I'm going to make an attempt to enjoy demons souls. Is it really that unforgiving, hard? Or is it just a mere learning curve?
Finally! I've manage to find this game for my collection. Now I have all three games, Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 & 2. I'm very happy, because I am a new fan of this game series. I do have a video plan for these three games, now that I have them & I can play them.
Ta'Chaun Mosley To go the full lineage, he also needs the King's Field series, as they were the pre-souls souls games. (though I don't think full game lineages are that important; just interesting)
@oars44 oh. what about with a new character? does it get harder then? oh and if i kill npc's in nexus do they revive? coz i killed 2 and was thinking about killing the knight guy for the key to that place past the enemy with red eyes and spear in level 1
@oars44 ah ok ty. does the woman or man in nexus do anything later on coz before i killed them, they didnt do anything like shops or anything (forgot their name as they dead lol)
@CrimsonFyre The gameplay and controls are complex. You can't just map everything to the R1 and L1. R1 is right hand, L1 is left hand. R2 is stronger right hand, L2 is stronger left hand. So if you have a specific shield + sword combo, you may shield bash with L2 or just block with L1. R1 for quick slash and R2 for deep thrust. If you don't wanna use back triggers a mage build works so maybe you'd L1 to block and R1 to cast.
The archstone (Arthurian "rock with sword in it") is always there, but if you leave and return every enemy previously killed is respawned, an exception are the bosses. You usually get another archstone further in the level after you kill a boss.
Inecome, I have been watching your review lately and you do a good job ironing out the good and the bad in a game. I actually have more a request than just a comment, If you love this game, you should definitely check out the new monster hunter for the psp, Monster Hunter Unite, I would also love to see a Review of monster hunter tri for the Wii. I definitely be getting it.
@P1n0iGam3rS: Yeah. It's open world. There are five main sections of Boletaria (the game's setting). Each main section has 3-4 subsections. You're free to explore them in any order you wish, and what you do in any section can effect your experiance in other sections. -The online is great too. Beware of false messages... You can invade, or be invaded, at any time, and that can effect the rest of your game.
Why is it that sometimes I see other peoples messages, post messages, and see other ghosts but then a few minutes later I can't. What is that about? How can I stay connected all the time?
LOL RIGHT ON! Haha I know exactly what you're talking about, I recently got into the fighting/racing genre of games and I think it's safe to say that I've never experienced more intensity than I ever have playing games like COD or Battlefield.
I love the fact that Mark pretty confidently says 'this is the game everyone will be talking about'. Here I am, 6 years later, jost bought a copy, played 3 hours and fell in love with the game. Best thing I played since Diablo 1 back in 1997.
we should grind couloless demopns i jsut bought the game and it is the only way to upgrade some weapons i need some ont to play with
New to the series? Definitely try dark souls & bloodborne then
EnricoZulu me ?
No
EnricoZulu hey you watch your mouth brony
I love Mark's laid back, down-to-earth approach to video-game reviewing. You've got to respect the fact that even though he isn't all that great at Demon's Souls/Dark Souls, he can still give the series the credit it is due - a quality that seems absent in many people these days.
Rewatching some old ones again since there are finally new CGR videos up
Me as well. lololol
That opening cinematic always gets me.
The bad ending credits are also great.
Bought this game yesterday and OMG
LOVE the atmosphere
Well you are going to like the remake even more
I feel that the dark souls estus system would have benefited this game better than its original inclusion in dark souls. The best game to come out on the PS3 bar none! Long live Classic game room! I’m not a comics fan, but that’s ok. Come back and review games Mark!
I haven't been this engrossed in a game since Zelda ocarina which happens to be my favorite game of all time. If it wasn't for nostalgia these souls games would be #1 lb 4 lb ranked
It's sad that we don't see more games like this. The casualization of gaming has really made games like this one a rare commodity.
And now it's a full fledged genre of it's own. I'm glad this aged poorly
@@pentexsucks43eh. I still don’t think we see enough games that experiment or try things. I think his comment aged well.
One of the best reviews I have ever seen. Extremely insightful and prophetic. The Souls' series is still going strong almost a decade later.
This is *STILL* one of my favorite reviews ever.
same
i love how he kinda just talks about the game instead of doing an in depth review. it's so chill!
Anyone who got the: Demon's Souls Platinum Trophy represent! I'm a proud owner of that beautiful and rewarding Platinum. Over a hundred hours put in, gallons of tears and sweat, and hundreds of deaths, but oh so worth it!
Im right with ya man.
Got all 3 soul plates, but demons was first and my most prized
my first platinum was demons souls :D
TengokuNinja Over a hundred hours put in?? Son, I've put in over 600 hours.
TengokuNinja I plat'ed all three versions of Demon's Souls. :) Love this game so much.
Back in 2013, I stumbled upon this review. I was exploring the library for my brand new PS3. why you like it more? (I genuinely don't know, I'm not familiar with the series)

The entire time I was watching this: "USE YOUR SHIELD!!!!!"
Hey 5 years later I know, but Shields take off the Fun of the game, why Dodge and learn the boss If you can hold L1 and defend, I recommend to play without It, It's much more fun.
@@jokingbr
Well dodging is usually more effective than blocking anyway. A tank build is still pretty risky.
Every time i see this review it makes me want to play this game again
Me: Hey are you still playing Demon Souls.
Friend: Sorry I got bored and quit playing.
Me: Oh okay...so in other words you got stuck on a boss and gave up.
Friend: Pretty much.
In celebration of Dark Souls coming out I'm watching this again :D
I remember watching this review when it came out 2 years ago, and playing Demon Souls myself for 2 weeks daily. :D
Honestly this was my favorite RPG EVAR.
I love beatumups, I love rpgs,
AND I F#CKING LOVE THIS GAME.
Mark can make even Demon's Souls look lighthearted. lol
Dark souls 1 is great Souls 2 lost me but I still finished it and I love Souls 3, fantastic fucking series of games

am I the only one who likes the look of Demon's Souls better than Dark Souls?
I get mad when people say this game rips dark souls, it is like saying pokemon red and blue ripped off pokemon silver and gold
i never said it was a rip off. for god sakes this came before dark souls and is made by the same people.
southparkdudz Never said that you said that, just stating a general idea of how i feel
ahhh ook mis understood your comment.
Demons souls has a way better atmosphere and overall feeling of despair . I won't be playing the remake .
seems like this game is very cool... but i dont have much free time.. does it still worth to play it tho? how much time do u need to finish it?
there is a developer message tells you that world 2 enemies are susceptible to pierce attacks at the first stairs at the beginning of the level, (world), it doesn't matter, it is old game, and the review is old, so just forget what I said, just talking to my self.
should I get this or wait for Gran Turismo 5 or Battlefield Bad Company 2?
The Nexus is more like the Hunter's Dream than the Fire Link Shrine.
Demons Souls is like Guitar Hero and Mirror's Edge mixed together.
thats the best way to say hard XD
Or actually the worst way to say 'hard'.
Is Knight a good character for a balance in Magic and Melee combat?
I'm trying to decide between Royalty, Soldier and Knight/Temple Knight.
I can't believe Mark thinks this game was easier than Dark Souls. This game was just outright brutal
+Ekaj Gaint I'm with mark on this one. I thought that this game was probably easier than all the souls games except maybe dark souls 2.
demons souls is the easiest in the series
Acrobat Old king doran would like to have a word with you lol. The game gets a lot harder with pure black world tendency and some of the NPC black phantoms are brutal. I feel that the environments are harder than most of the bosses imo with a couple exceptions.
Yeah, it’s hard to come up with an example for comparison, when you’re describing the first genre-defining game, just after it drops...
Demon's Souls reminded me of why I'm not a fan of RPGs. Although I was able to play this game longer than Elder Scrolls Oblivion which was a bore fest.
This is a JRPG, not a RPG.
Now I'm not saying "Fuck you for not liking my favourite game!!!" OK!
Plz, no. I just dealt with 2 ppl who did that T.T
Rage Angel They are both RPGs. The 'J' stands for a country, but it doesn't really make it a different genre.
+CommentatorDeluxe I'm glad somebody understands this
+Rage Angel It's not a JRPG, it's an action RPG. JRPGs are like Final Fantasy.
Fuck you for not liking oblivion.
is there any way to go back and defeat the bosses, cuz i already use their souls :(
He has one of the best voices for game reviews, pure and simple :-)
I actually liked it, he shows nice high quality gameplay, no quick montages, he just talks about it in a very normal human tempo
there's no rattling involved.
I prefer this type of review over any professional one anyday ^^
@smoo87
alright, i'll give it a try. I heard that the game's difficulty wasn't "cheap" but it's STRICT. is that a good descriptor for Demon's Souls?
What? Classic game room left TH-cam? Where can I watch their latest reviews?
Yay! got this game for chrismas and im very happy with it! I have 1 question about the spells in this game... how do you do them? :D
my favourite CGR review, I have to play this some day
What's stopping you from playing it now?
don't have PS3
Tommy B Ah yes, that's certainly problematic. Lol
+RatchetandSly haha!
nirvana 8193 Don't I feel stupid. :P
dude that was such an awesome review... what a funky game im def going to get it!!!
@InecomCompany Is the music in the background or in game from your music library?
is this game worth buying? even though it's hard and for extra, does it have high replay value?
For someone who normally doesn't play this type of game would you recommend Dark Souls or Skrim?
Is it still easy to get summoned nowadays? The games been out for years now so I can't imagine getting summoned very quickly.
I miss your game reviews...
Favorite video game reviewer...

This is why I drink at night.

Do you have enough faith or mp? You also need enough slots for a Miracle or Magic spell to work.
im thinking about picking up ps plus tommorow is it still free? that will be my deciding factor please answer
this game worth buying and is it a Open world RPG game or a Diablo 2 type world stuff

Oh ok that sounds more believable lol, I was thinking you meant the first time you played it, but 14hrs. that's awesome well done.
reminds me a little of TItan quest... a pc game, Really good... is this going to be for xbox or not?
Damn, I was waiting for you to say "And you increase your abilities with SOUL POWER"
whats that song at 0:41 ?
I've heard so many amazing things about the souls games now that its free on PS+ I'm going to make an attempt to enjoy demons souls. Is it really that unforgiving, hard? Or is it just a mere learning curve?
Can't wait to play this when I finally get a PS3 at the end of this month, always look forward to harsh/difficult games esp. from an RPG :D
@SyphonFilterr I think I'm sold. I'm gonna probably get this during the holidays or earlier on if it's cheap. Thanks for the info.
Whats the name of the song that plays at the end of the video? sounds like something that came from the movie Shaft.
Finally!
I've manage to find this game for my collection.
Now I have all three games, Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 & 2.
I'm very happy, because I am a new fan of this game series.
I do have a video plan for these three games, now that I have them & I can play them.
I have all 3 games too, there so good
Cydia Is needed 4 me now all u need is bloodborne

Joshua Day That'll be hard
+Joshua Day yeah but king's field isn't part of the souls series its just similar to souls

whoa, transcribe audio actually works pretty well with this video
I watch this review every other week :)
sigh, i think i might have to get it from america or japan. such a shame they dont release it world wide.
btw can you go online on it and find people?
Ever played King's Field or older Tenchu titles?
@oars44 ah ok ty. does the woman or man in nexus do anything later on coz before i killed them, they didnt do anything like shops or anything (forgot their name as they dead lol)
how many hours did u play during those 2 days, 48 h??

@CrimsonFyre The gameplay and controls are complex. You can't just map everything to the R1 and L1. R1 is right hand, L1 is left hand. R2 is stronger right hand, L2 is stronger left hand. holy crap!!! how do you get those awesome boss weapons!!!!??? somebody please help! at least garl vinlands bell weapon
took me like 5 playthroughs to platinum this game. definitely one of the best games i have ever played
man 2009 was the year of the ps3 Infamous, killzone 2, uncharted 2, god of war collection, flower, ratchet & clank a crack in time and this
