The button on distributor cap is an air vent. Helps keep moisture from forming inside the cap.

can anyone definitively say wether the oil pump rod is supposed to come out with the distributor AND does the retainer ring end go into the distributor shaft or down into the oil pump shaft? there are so many opposing views on this

Making it to difficult. Just pull old cap leave wires on. Replace rotor. Then pull one wire off old cap and put on new cap that’s installed on distributor. Put it in same location as on old cap. Then just keep pulling and replacing in clockwise order. Done. Don’t even need to know number 1 or any !!!

A book of wire numbers goes a long way, and don't mark with a black marker on the black boot. Mark on the grey wire it's self

Should it be loose? Mine keeps cutting out when you give it gas. I have replaced almost everything that would normally cause it. But other than plugs and wires I haven't touched the distributor.

Actually mine has a tendency to run hot if I'm sitting in 1 spot for 2 long. Hell even blew a hoes ones at night, I couldn't tell it was hot with my lights off until it was to late.
