I love them both and get into the habit of hitting the wrong key using different key mappings when I hop between them (eg o to rotate in oni vs e in rimworld).
@@GrindThisGame Quick question, is there any reason for me to spread out equipment and machinery or should I save space by squeezing stuff together? It seems to affect Decor just like how Beauty works in Rimworld.
I try to locate machines outside my base more due to heat but they do have a decor hit as well. For machines they need to interact with I will often put some art beside them to help their mood.
You did such a great job putting together your tutorial videos on a SUPER complex game with many layers of depth and management. Don’t worry about naysayers comments about organization and notes or whatever. A game this deep would require HOURS of prep work for each video if you wanted to truly organize as “they” say. I think you’re doing fine the way you’re doing it! Especially for explaining for free and doing a better job than the game can do! And it’s early access so all the stuff you covered could change. Thanks for all the work you’ve done. Please keep them coming!

Interesting to see how much game changed compared to today. There are a lot of little differences, like duplicants now not liking light (usually) when sleeping. Biggest difference visible in tutorial is revamped research selection screen.
I have watched numerous tutorials but this one is by far the best. Everything is explained at a great pace and it easy to follow and understand. Thank you.
Thank you, I had watched tutorial video after video, and they all assumed you know what they are talking about, which is tough when you are brand new to the game. You also didn't assume that we would have the same seed as you. You explained the details and basics perfectly and made it easy to grasp and understand.

I've had this game for like a year and didn't do much progress, usually I just don't know what I'm doing and my dupes got stressed and dirty and died in their own piss lol. But this tutorial is really helpful, and your voice is so chill! I think imma go and binge the whole tutorial series now
it's gotta be tough to make a tutorial for a early access game, but this game really needs it. i had this game at launch and was on and off love/frustration with it. i'm in now but for me it takes a whiteboard, research(youtube players), and keyboard shortcuts for me to finally "get" it.
The starter guides out there are already out of date...and so will this guide but I figured I would get something newer out there. I was watching a streamer new to the game and things like building pipes/filters etc and basic stuff was giving him trouble so I figured he wasn't alone. There is so much detail and complexity in the game now with all the updates.
As the game gets more complex i worry that it will be more and more inaccessible. So things like this tutorial that's full of things that were for me very hard fought to learn must be invaluable to new players interested in getting into this. for example i just recently had a whole colony collapse because of starvation because i didn't understand that he couldn't get water for the musher. Now i believe it may be a bug, but because the water pump was operational and normal, but building another one next to it ..problem solved. However it took two colonies dying for me to actually discover what the problem was. I tried every possible priority, job changing, moving the musher, moving the power, etc etc etc but for some reason after X amount of days my cook would just go sweeping or digging or completely idle while everyone starved. This makes me love and hate this game. It can be hard to explain to others, and i think you do a good job explaining the things i think are important starting out. ( i can't stop typing )
Situations like that can be frustrating. Sometimes I end up turning on the manual priorities or preventing dupes from doing some jobs while allowing others. If it was a bug that is frustrating..or even if it wasn't a bug then it's just confusing.
I like to have my priorities personalized so i thought it was my fault. But finally looking at the micro musher details it said 100/0 g of water . So i tried digging it out maybe it was flooded or maybe it can get clogged or some new feature i didn't read about. Then I built another one and it went up to like 3000kg of water or whatever. But now i read and pay attention to all the details and info on all my machines more carefully so i guess it was a learning moment even if it was a bug. :D
I agree wholeheartedly with Trelah. This game does really need more of a tutorial, but I have a feeling that may come in time. @Grind This Game: I happened upon your series here so I can maybe work my way out of my rut in ONI...I get to the point of making an oxygen room and stuff, and an updated washroom with plumbing, but then I get stalled, not knowing what to do. I end up nearly completing all of my research tree while not knowing what to do. Guess it helps that now you're able to turn off hunger and stuff...as if I had to deal with hunger and everything while learning, I believe I'd fail and just lose motivation to play. One question though: Why the stacked doors on your little barracks?
As a Tip, I usually build the manual generator NEXT to the print pod for the light source. This helps with décor because of the light. And since they're on the wheel most of the time, it reduces stress. You could also deconstruct the food box and place the research station on the other side of the POD. (early on they're spending a lot of time next to the pod).
I've been playing ONI for some time so nothing of this is really new, but I still like to watch this. Review of the basics isn't hurting. =] Some general feedback on the video: I like the pace the video goes in. This gives a lot of time to take in all the information and tips there are. I know some of it because of the certain kind of slowness there is at the beginning, but it's ok. I don't need to be pausing the video constantly or go back because I might have missed something. Your voice is also very relaxed and pleasant to hear, which is always nice from a viewer's standpoint. You're explaining the things as they're coming and are relevant at that moment, not overflowing with information that is used later and might confuse people. On a different note: I can tell that you go through two of the most basic questions (on top of making a tutorial for people) at least I tend to have whenever I make a new colony: What do I have around me? Where should I locate things for it to be as practical as possible? Overall this is really fun to watch, and it's nice to listen to your voice. ^^
I mean that you had them, at least that's what I think. =) In the video everything needed is explained: Where/when, it's more useful for things to be in/be built, and why.

I usually start my base by shuffling the characters until I get a character named "Stinky" that is "flatulent"... A Stinky that doesn't fart is just as good, but I like the role play aspect. ;) It takes a while to get those two specific things, but once I do, I'm good to go have a nap and start the game the next day. to each his own. :'D cheers for the vid Wm; good of you to notice that help was needed. Your tutorial is great :) i bought that game 2 years ago and all just died because i just played it with no idea of anything. Now i found your tutorials and give it a new try - i'm in cycle 101 now and nothing really bad happened so far. except the one time i accidently had the deconstruct overlay activated and accidently destoried the half of my base :D:D but I was able to load thow :D Is so cute how you adore the little animations and critters :D i really love your tutorials - thanks a lot :)
I am glad you did this series. I spent a ton of time and made it to cycle 24 or so. I even set up my first CO2 scrubber in my base. I don't regret my purchase either. You make this game look deceptively easy. The dupes are calling me...

Very helpful to get into the game. I just installed it - thought that it looked sweet, but in the end i closed it up, cause i was kinda overwhelmed by all the stuff. They should definitely put something like an ingame tutorial into the game that covers: Oxygene, Temperature, Health, Stress and how those interact with Food, Decor, Germs etc. I didnt even know that "rooms" existed. I know for sure that many player will be scared away by the complexity if the documentation is not good and that would be a shame, since it seems to be a beautiful game.

I can change one to 5 and the other to 6. If i change one, the other gets the same. With schedules you can now also separate Loud Sleepers from other dupes in time rather than space. They can sleep in the same room as other dupes as long as the dupes two beds over sleep at a different time than them.
as a tip for new players: you can order all 3 toilets and wash basins, and set the priorety of two of each lower then five. that way you can start at the back of the room.
Starting to love this game but I hope they change the physics a bit so that building two doors atop each other isn't more efficient. I respect the scientific depth of the game but when things like that actually make things more efficient...still it's quite a good game and I appreciate your tips and tricks!
This was really great. I'd appreciate knowing if anything has changed since the video with 6 months of updates, but it all seems pretty introductory so I'm guessing not too much?
It's also good for separating LoudSleepers sleeping times away from everyone else, paired with assigning them on purpose to beds far away enough from other LoudSleepers. I also like having a NightOwl schedule to make sure they're up and working all night. I think GrindThisGame did separate each of his starting dupes into 3 schedules in his SpaceIndustry series? So he could stagger bathroom and sleeping times. Then as he got new dupes he sorted them evenly into the schedules.
Yeah I can do one for plastic and conveyor. Not sure about steam generation though.... I haven't really done that in the game much as the steam generator is so terrible. I'll probably do one for critters eventually as well.
Slime biomes you pretty much want to avoid until you have Atmo Suits. You'll need reed fiber for the atmo suits, which I think you can only get from the slime biomes, you'll want to find a way to break in to one with as little germs as possible. Check the germ overlay and find the least germy way to get to some thimble reed plants as possible to make your first couple of atmo suits. Once you have an exosuit system in place, you can mine relatively safely in the slime biomes, but be careful about your dupes bringing germy materials back in to your base. If you mine algae from the slime biomes, and your dupes put germy algae in your deoxidizers, you'll get slimelung in the air. That's what the ore washing machines are for. If you put them just outside of your exosuit checkpoint, they work kind of like wash basins. Whenever a dupe passes by one while carrying germy materials, they'll stop and wash the material before passing. It can be quite a bit to set up, but if you start working on it early, once it's all set up, you're pretty much free to explore and mine from the entire map.
I'm usually able to enter the slimelung areas without exosuits but it requires cleaning the air and dealing with the slime (converting to algae outside the base) or storing it underwater for later use. It's also pretty easy to get reed fiber without hitting any slime but depends on the worldgen. I usually get my cold oxygen set up before building exosuits as algae is somewhat limited early on. We all have our ways of doing things :)
Is there really a need for three washing basins? I've always played with just one or two (usually two, one at each entrance of the toilet room or one at each side) and I have never had a problem with germs in the game (unless I have problems with polluted oxygen or water), also isn't it better to have the third washing basin in the kitchen to avoid problems with food?
I’ve recently got back into ONI, and so I shall rewatch various tip videos because this game is more stressful than DST, and my dupes never do what I want.
Bro your Beginner's Guide series are the best but a lot of things have changed since you started uploading this series, It's really outdated now, Like Job board, pipe made out of abyssalite, and other things don't work anymore, and I thought my game is buggy somehow that those thing don't work anymore! Technically, having Yokel is bad because you cant assign them to the 'research job role' You can STILL gain some Learning bonuses by assigning them to the job role since they gain XP without actually performing the job itself. So after you've researched everything, - its still possible to level up learning. Having Yokel prevents you from assigning them that job role thus no learning increases. Learning helps level up faster. I usually assign dupes to learning early in the game so they can gain skills in other areas faster.
I would love a guide on ranching the different animals, too. After I watch this tutorial playlist I have his ranching playthrough ( th-cam.com/play/PLHw_EJXYsdHhuGi7uozzVgzfEHx5bogF8.html ), and he's got a one-off intro to critters from that upgrade ( th-cam.com/video/a94UTEZo9M8/w-d-xo.html ). Hm... He seems to have done a bit of exploring specifically with ranching when the preview came out ( th-cam.com/play/PLHw_EJXYsdHigdI-MaQqYHnckY0w87gj4.html ).
I like to start with an Operator/Builder, a Cook/Farmer, and a Miner/Rancher. Then a Tidy/Supplier when Im ready as my main 4. Research and Art can be worked on by the best of the best
Not sure if this is a new thing or not, but water will become a source of food poisoning if you drop fertilizer in it, which he did. As of quality of life update 3 (may have been earlier) fertilizer dug up in water will cause polluted water, then germs then food poisoning. Fertilizer in it's undisturbed state does not seem to be any issue, but if you drop a ball in the water, you need to get a ladder in there and sweep that up.

I usually start my base by shuffling the characters until I get a character named "Stinky" that is "flatulent"... A Stinky that doesn't fart is just as good, but I like the role play aspect. ;)
It takes a while to get those two specific things, but once I do, I'm good to go have a nap and start the game the next day.

Your tutorial is great :) i bought that game 2 years ago and all just died because i just played it with no idea of anything. Now i found your tutorials and give it a new try - i'm in cycle 101 now and nothing really bad happened so far. except the one time i accidently had the deconstruct overlay activated and accidently destoried the half of my base :D:D but I was able to load thow :D

I am glad you did this series. I spent a ton of time and made it to cycle 24 or so. I even set up my first CO2 scrubber in my base. I don't regret my purchase either. You make this game look deceptively easy. The dupes are calling me...

Very helpful to get into the game. I just installed it - thought that it looked sweet, but in the end i closed it up, cause i was kinda overwhelmed by all the stuff. They should definitely put something like an ingame tutorial into the game that covers: Oxygene, Temperature, Health, Stress and how those interact with Food, Decor, Germs etc. I didnt even know that "rooms" existed. I know for sure that many player will be scared away by the complexity if the documentation is not good and that would be a shame, since it seems to be a beautiful game.
Yeah I think that is why youtube and wiki guides do well. I think once it gets closer to fully done they will add tutorials.

Hello again, I dont want to waste your time, but since you were so friendly and answered to my comment, you are maybe willing to help me. Im not able to get real basic stuff done.
1) When i set generell priorities like "Move Debris into storage" or "Mob liquids" those priorites are interconnected. I can change one to 5 and the other to 6. If i change one, the other gets the same. Is this intented and im just to stupid?

At least they wont pick up the damn Nutritionsbars at Prio 8 and wont deconstruct stuff at 9 so i can build a basin for holding the bars clean. My guys are starving cause i cant really builds, pick up and set orders.

Glad to help. I just hope it is mostly up to date. You can't build aybssalite pipes or tiles directly now so use insulated tiles/pipes.

With schedules you can now also separate Loud Sleepers from other dupes in time rather than space. They can sleep in the same room as other dupes as long as the dupes two beds over sleep at a different time than them.

as a tip for new players: you can order all 3 toilets and wash basins, and set the priorety of two of each lower then five. that way you can start at the back of the room.
Starting to love this game but I hope they change the physics a bit so that building two doors atop each other isn't more efficient. I respect the scientific depth of the game but when things like that actually make things more efficient...still it's quite a good game and I appreciate your tips and tricks!

This was really great. I'd appreciate knowing if anything has changed since the video with 6 months of updates, but it all seems pretty introductory so I'm guessing not too much?
The main one is you cant build insulating things with abyssalite directly now.
Should've mentioned earlier that the schdule can be changed. And assign bath time, which is a great thing to seperate the times ppl go to the badroom.
It's also good for separating LoudSleepers sleeping times away from everyone else, paired with assigning them on purpose to beds far away enough from other LoudSleepers. I also like having a NightOwl schedule to make sure they're up and working all night.
I think GrindThisGame did separate each of his starting dupes into 3 schedules in his SpaceIndustry series? So he could stagger bathroom and sleeping times. Then as he got new dupes he sorted them evenly into the schedules.
How do you do that?

Yeah I can do one for plastic and conveyor. Not sure about steam generation though.... I haven't really done that in the game much as the steam generator is so terrible. I'll probably do one for critters eventually as well.
Slime biomes you pretty much want to avoid until you have Atmo Suits. You'll need reed fiber for the atmo suits, which I think you can only get from the slime biomes, you'll want to find a way to break in to one with as little germs as possible. Check the germ overlay and find the least germy way to get to some thimble reed plants as possible to make your first couple of atmo suits. Once you have an exosuit system in place, you can mine relatively safely in the slime biomes, but be careful about your dupes bringing germy materials back in to your base. If you mine algae from the slime biomes, and your dupes put germy algae in your deoxidizers, you'll get slimelung in the air. That's what the ore washing machines are for. If you put them just outside of your exosuit checkpoint, they work kind of like wash basins. Whenever a dupe passes by one while carrying germy materials, they'll stop and wash the material before passing.
It can be quite a bit to set up, but if you start working on it early, once it's all set up, you're pretty much free to explore and mine from the entire map.

I'm usually able to enter the slimelung areas without exosuits but it requires cleaning the air and dealing with the slime (converting to algae outside the base) or storing it underwater for later use. It's also pretty easy to get reed fiber without hitting any slime but depends on the worldgen. I usually get my cold oxygen set up before building exosuits as algae is somewhat limited early on. We all have our ways of doing things :)

Is there really a need for three washing basins? I've always played with just one or two (usually two, one at each entrance of the toilet room or one at each side) and I have never had a problem with germs in the game (unless I have problems with polluted oxygen or water), also isn't it better to have the third washing basin in the kitchen to avoid problems with food?
I guess I like to be extra careful. It also makes it easier to expand to 20+ dupes but then I usually need more.

Technically, having Yokel is bad because you cant assign them to the 'research job role' You can STILL gain some Learning bonuses by assigning them to the job role since they gain XP without actually performing the job itself. So after you've researched everything, - its still possible to level up learning. Having Yokel prevents you from assigning them that job role thus no learning increases. Learning helps level up faster. I usually assign dupes to learning early in the game so they can gain skills in other areas faster.

I would love a guide on ranching the different animals, too. I like to start with an Operator/Builder, a Cook/Farmer, and a Miner/Rancher. Then a Tidy/Supplier when Im ready as my main 4. Research and Art can be worked on by the best of the best
Those are some solid combos.
Why not Miner/Builder? A single duplicant can make space and then build things without moving.

Not sure if this is a new thing or not, but water will become a source of food poisoning if you drop fertilizer in it, which he did. As of quality of life update 3 (may have been earlier) fertilizer dug up in water will cause polluted water, then germs then food poisoning. Fertilizer in it's undisturbed state does not seem to be any issue, but if you drop a ball in the water, you need to get a ladder in there and sweep that up.
