Nice video, but a few comments for new players. 1: Hatches eating things is good. They produce coal when they get to do that, which is more valuable than most of the stuff they can eat off the floor. Containers for the things you don't want them to eat, like ore and algae, is much better. 2: One tile space on each side of the early central ladder at least. Better circulation and room for fire poles and transit tubes, etc later on. 3: Farm tiles save one tile of space pr plant compared to planters. And it just takes one more research to unlock. I never build planters and recommend that you don't either. 4: Wild plants can be autoharvested for more free food, which is preferable to digging them up. You can even place doors leading into natural caves to keep any shine bugs inside so you can keep the wild blossoms growing for as long as you need them. 5: Most importantly, and why I even commented here; never, ever, ever build a microbe musher for any reason. For a slight increase in kcal pr cycle, that you could also achieve by simply digging for hidden objects and more seeds, combined with more farms, you spend power, water, dirt and labor time for the dupe who operates it AND you get a significantly increased risk of food poisoning. Needless to say this is not worth it at all. I prefer calling the microbe musher the noob trap, which is exactly what it is. The only place I will sign off on anyone anywhere building a microbe musher is on the surface. A prize for the player who gets it hit by the most comets! No electricity needed! Not enough food? Build more farms and dig up hidden objects for muckroot to survive until you can build an electric grill. Do not, I repeat not, build a micro musher. It is very irresponsible to recommend this in a YT video. Daily I have to help noobs on Steam who have followed this poor piece of advice so they now have massive food poisoning and other food issues. This is not beginners advice. It is something a seasoned player might decide to do to add an extra challenge to the game, because mushers are not only useless but detrimental. Like I am doing now in my latest base, where I have 16 flatulent dupes for added challenge. I have played at least 50 different bases far into the end game and I have never, not once, made a single mush bar. And I I have never had a single problem with food poisoning because of it, unlike the poor noobs who watch this video before playing. Don't listen to him, you're being set up! /rant over.
I agree with 1 2 and 3 but not 4 and 5. I prefer to dig up the plants because you can get them growing much faster domestically. I don't suggest this for sleet wheat though as it's a pain to grow domestically. As for the microbe musher.... it's not great but it's certainly fine to use early game. It's fairly easy to run out of food before you get a meal lice farm set up if you are taking on a decent number of dupes. I almost always use it early game without any issues at all. This is after 30+ bases and 1200 hours played. When used with meal lice it is a nice trade-off to get extra calories in exchange for infinite water. Food poisoning comes from bathrooms and it is fairly simple to keep germs from exiting the bathrooms. The electric grill can have the same issues with germs if germs are not handled correctly. Even if they get food poisoning, on normal settings the dupes can handle quite a bit of it.
I think you hit on the key thing here: 1200 hours. Same as me. We know how the musher works and can use it. But if you only knew how much trouble noobs have with food and food poisoning because of trying to use the musher early. I think it's because they end up using dirt from the composts for cooking. But whatever it is, it is daily on the Steam forums. And my recommendation is always to forget about the musher and focus on digging for muckroot and building more farms quickly instead. I never build mushers in my bases, and also have 1200 hours and at least 50 bases because I like starting over a little earlier than most people. I do have to rush farming by digging a lot more than you did here, to get more seeds and muckroot. But by cycle 12-15 it's all fine. So I think this is better beginner's advice basically, because it is simpler and lets you ship the cooking altogether until you can build grills. Anyway, thanks for the response. I really do like your videos. I just got triggered by this a little bit because of my mentoring experiences in the Steam forums.
16 Flatulent dupes sound interesting - could make some power with a proper filtering setup =) I use auto-harvest early on, but once I have my farm up and running, I dig them up, got a few times where duplicants got in trouble by trying to reach a plant I set to harvest a while ago.
In my experience, with an optimal ( best I can do) pump setup, 16 flat dupes can fully power about one and a half generators. So let's say someone more clever can fully power two generators. It's a lot of free energy.
Nice video! A small additions regarding jobs for new players: 1) Each job provide certain bonus to assigned duplicants(+stats or certain trait like hard ore digging or Supercomputer trait) when jobs mastery reach 100% this bonus becomes permanent for duplicant, so you don't need to keep dupes on Miner to dig Granite or other kind of hard stuff 2) If job is marked with hearth symbol(job type equal to dupes hobbies) then this kind of jobs will be mastered two times faster
jeez, i wish i looked at your tutorial before playing the game, i bought it like 6 weeks from now and i was suffering from one crisis to another, i stopped playing after like 2 weeks because i was always losing my colony after about 20 cycles and barerly even controlling it throught that period. *now i will play this game like a pro!*
Really good, I enjoy more relaxed gameplay videos and you nail it in your approach. I'm too old to enjoy folks shouting into a mic haha. I think I started over about three times and watched the videos about three times. Just listening and playing along to get a good groove. Great tips and the chlorine water lock worked great!
Great videos, and good guide u've started. But I got few issues based on my experience to add, except that already mentioned about farming wild plants, not digging them. 1. Science station should be placed next to water source. 2. 2 outhouses is enough for =< 10 dupes. 1 wash basin per 2 outhouses is totally ok as well. 3. It's always better to plan your base from start, so leaving 1 tile next to the ladder will help you to build fire pole without rebuilding everything in near future. And it helps airflow.
I've had 3 dupes and 2 toilets and the 3rd has made a mess (rarely) so that is why I build 3. 1 wash basin for two toilets is bad because you can have 1 dupe skip washing their hands (while 1 sink is busy) and they spread food poisoning everywhere. I agree about the last point though :)

It was a lot easier even in this update. Now you've got to get morale, and to get morale you need rooms, decor and all sorts of stuff. Then there's jobs and the advanced research.

I just got this game and I didn't know anything. You helped a lot. Thanks. At one time I wasn't paying attention and one guy dug under a lake and flooded the whole base. It was very interesting to see a big waterfall. I thought an indoor waterfall added to the base.
I think its a good idea to redo a sorta tutorial run like this with all the updated content of ONI. Maybe just a chill Terra run after your 100 dupe base. Cuz there arent a lot of tutorials for those first time wanna get into this game. I think.

(I put that base on hold because the lag was too much. but im almost up to rocketry. just digging up the space biome, kinda the same time your 100dupe base breached space as well.) but i build things without thinking about them because i saw them in your vids, but maybe with tutorial guides, i'd be more mindful with what i do. actually, watching your old tutorial playlists is affecting how I play with a new base, i'm being more conservative now about destroying things and digging only what i need and im finding it more fun and challenging since you dont really have that much resources if you dont dig the map like USA looking for oil on a 3rd world country. i even managed to preserve a nature reserve in my base this time! yey! and really if i had known that i could spread germs with the water they used on the liceloaf ugh... anyway, just wanted to say i really love your vids. sorry for the long ass rant. and thanks a lot for the awesome content.
Another new player TIP is leave the wild plants that give food alone (except Muck Roots) The reason for this is because Wild Plants even though they have slow growth rate, they do NOT consume your resources so you save dirt/water/and time running to supply them. This tip carries on further to other plants later in the game like sleet wheat. Except Balm Lily which requires no resources or maintenance, those you can dig up and plant domesticate. For Pro TIP, Try to wall off blossom berries and trap shine bugs inside them. If you don't get a bug in there naturally, not a big deal, make a storage container (sweep only choose shine bug egg) and wait for their egg to be dropped and store their egg via sweep tool and empty the container to let the egg fall out, it will hatch inside the walled area over the blossoms. this gives free light source to the plant). Just keep eye out on critter egg inventory on the drop down list.
Digging up the plants in the beginning is silly, especially if you haven't researched farming. The shine bugs will allow the bristle to grow, and mealice will grow easily enough. Much easier to just allow harvest until a farm system is established, imo
yup, early way to get better moral. Even though 5 bb is not enough to grant the bonus constantly to all dupes, by managing food priorities, it allows one dup to get ahead, i.e. your miner for abyssalite
Love this series, but.... There is absolutely no reason to disable the Dupe station. By turning it off, you just disabled a huge bubble of free decor and lighting. Hit the decor overlay and see what things look like around the dupe station. Now look at it while the station is off. There's no time limit for accepting new dupes, and you can scrap the whole lot at any time to restart the counter. With your setup, you even have plants directly under the dupe station. With the free light it provides, and the light permeability in Airflow tile, you could even be growing bristle blossums early.
w00t, still watching through the whole series. Most of it I've seen already, but I'm only on part 4 and I've already learned some great tricks. The water lock in Part 4 is an absolute lifesaver.
I didn't use water locks for the longest time because I was lazy. But they really are great and quick to set up. The soaking wet debuff isn't great but in exosuits that isn't an issue.
You're better assigning dupes who "love" a certain job (have the heart symbol next to their name when you are assigning them the job) even if they have a lower starting skill, because they level up 50% faster. Even if one dupe has 3 or 4 more skillpoints than one who just loves it, very quickly they'll overtake the dupe who doesn't love the job
what i did for food for some time was making muck bars.(i think thats what their called) and i would grill them. and that kept me at 50,000 food alot of the time.
With somethings now changed in the game maybe you might have time to do an updated newbie playlist - this one is good but a few things not working the same anymore
Just as a thought for early circulation: is it possible to put a rotated door instead of opening up one tile and loose room bonus? Can dupes walk on it?
I know this is year old comment but lemme answer your question. Yes. My setup is made bedroom put doors on left and right command dupes to open them so the bedroom bonus is still in and air flow. I put door on the floor to the left and to the right and build ladders down so when they wake up they go down to eat then left to use toilet. Stay safe!
Hi I dont have all the options that you have, are you playing a different version? for example in the bottle emptying station I do not have the option to choose between dirty and clean water.
You can drain it down below the base but I often just dig up and over it and use it until it's gone. Sometimes it gets in the way and I just drain it down.
But don't you also lose your latrine room bonus by poking a hole through the ceiling of it? I believe if you replace it with a horizontal door it should keep the room bonus while still allowing air to flow through it. Loving this series tho, trying to get better at setting up my base better in the earlier game and these vids are helping a lot :)

for a good start this video ist still helpful i think. at least i feel this way. i just started too and it helped me to get on some tricks on how to get a stable start. ofcourse there are some updates now. e.g. i wonder right now where the jobs board went. because what he does at 5:20 is no longer possible - or is it me and i just didn't find it yet? haha
The whole consuming algae thing really hurts my brain especially since algea being a microscopic life forms would be easy to sustain if not actively propagate provided you provided adequate light a food source and CO2. One of the reasons its so desirable for use in self sustaining life support systems is how easy it is to keep alive compared to more complex plants
I wish someone would just go over the most important controls there are o many that it would be nice if someone broke down the most used and useful ones instead of having to troll through the key bind page for hours trying to remember everything because your not sure which controls are the the handful it would be good to memorize.

Why dig up the plants? The plants will give you at least 2 cycles of food for 3 dupes it's slow but handy early game That way you can dedicate time to build a small meal wood plot using the farm tiles and have extra chances of seed. Also the portal gives off light so you can drop 4 planter boxes to get a decent supply of bristle blossom for the earl game too :)
I guess I'm not into super micro management like that and go for the broader strokes. I rush a mealwood farm pretty fast so I just dig stuff up. You're totally correct though :)
My biggest mistake in oxygen was probably when I hooked and output pipe to an input on a espresso machine so the wrong water was going in and coming out

I didn't use water locks for the longest time because I was lazy. But they really are great and quick to set up. The soaking wet debuff isn't great but in exosuits that isn't an issue.

You're better assigning dupes who "love" a certain job (have the heart symbol next to their name when you are assigning them the job) even if they have a lower starting skill, because they level up 50% faster. Even if one dupe has 3 or 4 more skillpoints than one who just loves it, very quickly they'll overtake the dupe who doesn't love the job
True. I end up cycling every dupe through every job so it doesn't really matter that much.

what i did for food for some time was making muck bars.(i think thats what their called) and i would grill them. and that kept me at 50,000 food alot of the time.

Just as a thought for early circulation: is it possible to put a rotated door instead of opening up one tile and loose room bonus? Can dupes walk on it?
I know this is year old comment but lemme answer your question. Yes. My setup is made bedroom put doors on left and right command dupes to open them so the bedroom bonus is still in and air flow. I put door on the floor to the left and to the right and build ladders down so when they wake up they go down to eat then left to use toilet. Stay safe!

Hi I dont have all the options that you have, are you playing a different version? for example in the bottle emptying station I do not have the option to choose between dirty and clean water.
You might not have any available yet in bottled form.
Love the videos, but it seems like your map was pretty ideal for everything, what do you do when water is either above or below you to start?
You can drain it down below the base but I often just dig up and over it and use it until it's gone. Sometimes it gets in the way and I just drain it down.
But don't you also lose your latrine room bonus by poking a hole through the ceiling of it? I believe if you replace it with a horizontal door it should keep the room bonus while still allowing air to flow through it.
Loving this series tho, trying to get better at setting up my base better in the earlier game and these vids are helping a lot :)

I've only found your channel recently and I have been watching a lot of your videos. Would you still recommend this guide a year later? I just bought the game and want to get a head start in knowing how to play the game.
for a good start this video ist still helpful i think. at least i feel this way. i just started too and it helped me to get on some tricks on how to get a stable start. ofcourse there are some updates now. e.g. i wonder right now where the jobs board went. because what he does at 5:20 is no longer possible - or is it me and i just didn't find it yet? haha
I actually found it now. It now works with a skill tree where you can level skills and select a job for each guy on the left with a drop down menu.

What if food is too cold/hot? Does it do anything to the dupes and/or the food it's self or germs?
The plants need a certain temp but the food itself can be hot or cold. Food poisoning in food is bad.

The whole consuming algae thing really hurts my brain especially since algea being a microscopic life forms would be easy to sustain if not actively propagate provided you provided adequate light a food source and CO2. One of the reasons its so desirable for use in self sustaining life support systems is how easy it is to keep alive compared to more complex plants

Leave it (will turn into polluted oxygen which can be deodorized) or use a bottle emptier and dump it somewhere.

Why set Priority if you set everything to 7?
7 is for stuff I want done right now (6 or 8 would also work) 5 is for stuff I don't care about but want done eventually and 9 is for emergencies :)
so sad about the 5th peon that has no bed ;(
Why dig up the plants?
The plants will give you at least 2 cycles of food for 3 dupes it's slow but handy early game
That way you can dedicate time to build a small meal wood plot using the farm tiles and have extra chances of seed.
Also the portal gives off light so you can drop 4 planter boxes to get a decent supply of bristle blossom for the earl game too :)
I guess I'm not into super micro management like that and go for the broader strokes. I rush a mealwood farm pretty fast so I just dig stuff up. You're totally correct though :)

My biggest mistake in oxygen was probably when I hooked and output pipe to an input on a espresso machine so the wrong water was going in and coming out
