  • In this video, I unbox the Nokia E90 Communicator, Nokia's flagship device from 2007 and the last communicator of its kind. The Nokia E90 used to cost a fortune back in 2007, and came with a magnificent folding form factor with a fantastic QWERTY Keyboard. The video covers all of the Nokia E90 key features and weaknesses for its time.

Nokia needs to re-release their foldable series like the E90 phone with some of the newer features.. it was already quite ahead of its time.

As a sysadmin at the time it came out it was an insta-buy. You no longer needed to carry a laptop at all times. This phone and two spare batteries was all you needed if you went out hiking in the mountains over the weekend, went sailing or visited any other environment where power plugs could not be depended upon. You had an 80+ column ssh terminal in your pocket able to connect to mobile networks anywhere on the planet. What more could you need? And text mode didn't use that much data, so I used it all over the world without bothering with local SIMs. I don't think I ever used the browser or any multimedia features on it (you only needed IRC back in the day), but it was my go to device up until the iPad came out.

@@AbdullaZaki I had all the Communicators, but that one was by far the most integrated, it wasn't much larger than phones at the time, and had good GPS and Noka maps, after getting that one I unlearned how to use my sense of navigation :)
The only feature except for ssh sessions I spent time with was Nokia maps, this was one of the first phones with assisted GPS, so ridiculously precise even in urban areas, compared to previous phones, one feature it had that I miss in modern phones was that it could be switched to a mode where it just had an arrow and distance to target. You could walk a city you never been to before, take detours, wander down random streets, checking out what ever met your fancy, every now and then you checked the display, so you kind of knew the general direction and remaining distance, but kept free from a nav voice constantly going "Recalculating... take the next left" That feature is great if you are in a hurry and needed the shortest route, but it kills the magic of walking through a new city, you get isolated from the experience you are in the middle off. Nokia maps allowed you to explore cities as you pleased, without going the totally wrong direction!

@@AbdullaZaki Well, most of the things I would normally use a phone for apart from social media, content consumption (I have a huge music library - and yes, I play music offline) and file management. I can play music on it if I want, and sometimes I do, it's just that my Android music player app is too powerful and nice. I manage my files on my Android as well because of the massive number of files I have and the size that they occupy. The main feature for me are the calendar and notes, as I use them daily. That hardware keyboard is the best of all time for me. No phone ever or since matches the productivity I have from the E90. I also love playing games on it, both Java and Symbian, as long as they run smoothly. I don't do that often, though, as I don't game all that much.

Had a E-90 back in the days (I still have it in btw). I actually got it months before the release because I wrote (business) software for it. I absolutely loved it. The first phone in Netherlands with HSDPA+ support, the keyboard, the screen, it was really awesome. I also had a hosting company at the time and with this device I was able to provide 24/7 support because I could SSH to my servers from everywhere.
Loved when strangers when making fun of the size (“what is that for weird big brick!”) and you’d open up the phone showing the keyboard and display, the reaction immediately changed to “wooooowww that’s cool!”
And it’s the only phone I used for 3 years without having the need to upgrade.
I moved to the N900 when that came out, this was a very good device as well, but the E90 was better for typing, the battery-life of the N900 was very bad and the UX of the E90 was way better (N900 used Maemo Linux which was quite cool, but not very performant and the UX was underdeveloped).

And now...while I could probably afford it, our new "smartphones" took over the world by storm, so...I'm not sure how I would be able to handle my daily tasks on this phone. But it would definitely be a nice challenge. OMG, I loved Symbian S60 (v3). Such a beautiful, elegant and functional OS. And that keyboard was indeed magnificent. Nokia was one of the best, if not the best in manufacturing mobile phones keyboards. They were so resilient, and yet, easy to replace, in case they got damaged. But it was a rare occurrence when that happened. Those phones were built to last!

I used it for years and loved the design. In fact, I'm thinking of going back to it now, in 2023, because it was so excellent for texting and for making calls in bright sunlight. I cannot find any other phone today that is as practical for those two purposes combined. It had the best physical keyboard I've found on a phone. I later switched to the HTC Desire-Z, but it's nowhere near as practical for making calls in bright sunlight. I wish there were other phones today, based on the e-90 design. I don't understand why Nokia didn't further develop the Communicator series, preserving the basic folding design with the keyboard and keypad. It made so much sense.

Great review Abdulla, you never know what the future holds. I also feel that the way the E90 was build could really sell in today's day in age. I would love to see a newer version of the Nokia E90 with 4G, as well as being the delicious Mocha color with KaiOS freshly installed. I noticed I haven't watched a review of you since mid-December. I really like the way you expressed yourself about the Nokia E90. I own one and last time I used it was in 2018 and 2019, though I never bought it when it came out, too expensive. You are correct that the tactile feedback on the E90's keyboard does not compare to anything anywhere. For me the camera was very good in quality for being only 3.2mpx vs other Nokia phones that were 5mpx. The N97, nor the E7 could ever complete the package of nostalgia that this device holds. I remember I even used to download and convert videos in the 640x288 resolution, yes, I know is 800 by 388 but doing so they didn't seem to fit right, perhaps it was the format. I remember when HMD spoke that Nokia have already made many QWERTY phones back in it's time for them to consider bringing them back in the form of retro flashback feature phones, I was bummed out reading that. I made this super long and I apologize for getting carried away. I don't know if you have but I would love to see you review the Nokia E75 in 4K, another Nokia gem and another that got away from me. I only had the N8, the N900, E90, the 5800 Xpress Music, the N97 Mini and five Lumias, all in the progress of 10 years. Thank you, Abdulla Zaki for making this superb review that fills us with nostalgia!

While everyone was all smitten by the iPhone (2007) with it's terrible battery life (non-swappable), terrible 2MP camera with no video recording, no app store, terrible single speaker and you couldn't even copy/paste. The OS was pretty bare bones. I mean, you couldn't even set a wallpaper. The virtual keyboard and capacitive touchscreen were pretty groundbreaking though.
Meanwhile, I had my N95 with and army of fully charged batteries (infinite battery life), amazing at the time Carl Zeiss 5MP A.F. w/flash lens with 480p video recording as well as a front facing camera, Symbian app store, great stereo speakers and a more developed OS. There wasn't much I couldn't do on my N95. Loved that device! I used it as my daily driver up until the iPhone 4 release. I finally retired it at that point. I never used a case and the N95 had some scars. Built tough and was very reliable.
Enter the Nokia E90 Communicator. I wanted this device so bad back when it was released and I almost bought it but finding one and being able to afford it was a different story. It was my grail phone at the time. In the US the price was ridiculous and network compatibility wasn't great. So I was never able to buy one and time rolled on. Seeing it again brings back some cool memories of those times. Now I'm using and iPhone 13 Pro and newly acquired Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. The Z Flip 4 is my daily driver at the moment being it's brand new. I really like the old school feel to the device with new technology under the hood. The iPhone just seems so plain and boring sitting on my desk next to the Flip 4.
I would love to see an N95 video like this. Subbed and liked. Keep up the great work!
EDIT: Dude, your channel is an insane nostalgia drop! I just found your N95/N96 videos. Love it.

I remember that phone very well because I had it when my daughter was born in 2009, the first picture of my daughter in my arms was with it and in a few minutes it was on FB and my mom and dad had it, that was something impressive at that time.
Another cool thing was that I opened it as a laptop and put it on a base in the car and the GPS was very useful, the first time I saw a dynamic 3D map.
My next phone was an iPhone 3GS and the Nokia took better pictures although it was slow to focus.

I absolutely loved my E90. Brings back so many memories. It was the greatest phone Nokia ever released. I still have mine, must be over 15 years old now, it certainly looks it! I got it as a free upgrade. I think I had the E65 before it. In mocha as well. E90 was just so much more. I used that phone day in, day out. It just kept taking the punishment and even the odd clumsy drop as well. Only ever seen two other E90s being used in the wild. It was eventually replaced by an N86, but I never really liked that phone and had issues with it, so the E90 didn’t get an easy retirement. I think the best way to sum jt up is to list the Nokias I had before I went to iPhone- 6260, N70, N73, N95, N95 8GB, 5800, E65, E90, N86, N8 and Lumia 800. I only have the E90 still. I couldn’t part with it. Every other phone was just a phone. The E90 was an extension of me. And the absolute peak of Nokia.
