Ik this a really old video, but I feel like the best thing u can do in poker is to be perceived as an over aggressor, that way when u have the nuts, u can value bet alot and be less likely to be believed. What are ur thoughts? (I'm going to AC soon with a lot of money for poker so I'm trying to gain as much knowledge b4 I go)

bad points about fold equity, sure you gain more equity cause they fold, but you lose mass amounts of expectation, if he folds middle set to you, when you have top set, chances are you're making mistakes.
fold equity is only half the equation. pot equity is the other one and as you say, when you have a huge equity advantage your goal is not to make the other players fold, it's to keep them in and build the pot up!
it completely depends on the board texture. i would never fold a set when the board is k 5 2 rainbow and i have a set of deuces. but if the board is 910j of hearts and i have 99, and the turn is another heart, ill dump that shit
Sat down at a table with mostly aggressive players. I play according to the table. Playing a passive, tight, and trapping I easily made 5 times my starting stack. I can understand continuation and position betting. Let them feel in control and then stack them as you call their bluff. This strategy is good against nits or a Run out people don't show much interest. Big flush draws and open ended straight jobs are not going to fold in lower limit games. It all comes down to who your opponents are. Last night watching a guy trying to get me off my flopped full house was amusing. I did throw a couple bluffs in layer in the night because I built a table image that when I bet I have the goods. You can have good night's with this strategy but many more bad ones. I also recognize that these guys win big pots because people don't believe them. I also like calling with winning hand and making them show their cards first. Psychologically they rather never show what they bluffing with. Who is more feared the bluffer or the trapper? You take control of the table when people respect or fear your bets. Then can pull off your bluffs. You won't sit down in my local poker room and bluff your way to big wins.
Gripsed Poker Training - Evan Jarvis I respect your videos. Bluffing is good when you have those card dead days. I just like to implement many different strategies.
Very much enjoying your videos, Ian! But, with all due respect, I don't believe you were right in your point about always being happy when your opponent folds. Imo the critical parameter here should be 'expectation' aka EV, not equity. When a player folds he gives up all his EV (positive or negative) and that EV gets shared out between the remaining players. The example you quoted was at the end of a hand and at that stage most (if not all) players will have positive EV, so you would be reasonably glad for any opponent to fold, so I agree with you there. But in the earlier stages of a hand it is common for some players to have negative EV so you definitely would not want those players to fold - at least not until later in the hand, when their EV will probably become positive due to the weight of money on the table. Sorry to be anal, but I am in the process of writing an essay on this topic, so I kinda home in on it. I can, if pushed, prove what I am saying, starting from the fundamental gambling equation: EV = (Prob of A) x (Value of A) + (Prob of B) x (Value of B) + ... You made this video 7 1/2 years ago, so I'm guessing your later videos tidy up these issues. Thank you for your massive investment in the poker community. :) Best wishes. David
Cheers Catalina, I agree with you, there are certainly times where your equity advantage is so high that you'd rather not have your opponent fold. You explained it very well in your comment :)
@MrJonnyboy36 I play 3c6c ( haven't really gotten into poker since I last watched this vid since I've been doing other stuff) oh also when I posted this comment I was the worlds nittiest player... My game has changed a lot since than however I will tell u wen I did fold my set of 333 the guy had 888...

there are certainly many benefits to playing aggressive & why LAGs are considered the hardest to play against

@@gripsedI hate LAG maniacs
I calculated about 1/3 million hands played that +/- of all players who open raise preflop are actually up in all raise amounts in cash games.
Sorry, I don't understand what you're saying, but it sounds interesting. Could you explain what you mean?
the1jonte Only counting the players whom where first to preflop raise encountered long-term profit even though there is rake.
Ahh thanks :)
yeah there are lots of other factors as well, i was just giving an example of when u can easily get away from a set

Very good advice here me thinks. Nice one dude.
Cheers!
it depends on how big the bet is on the turn and how much the other guy has behind
100% well put!
i just won a sit ngo without betting at all
+ryan lally congrats!
that's because you were playing against passive people lol you gotta get out there and gamble, tight is right but not all the time.

If you are often aggressive then you are more likely to get called by bottom set or ace high because of your image

congratulations Ted, sounds like you really put on a clinic! I especially like the part about making them show their hands first, that's a great edge!
